Expected · National Polo Center - Wellington

American polo's oldest and highest trophy, contested at 22 goals through April at the National Polo Center in Wellington, Florida.

An event page tells you when it happens (with how sure we are of the date), why it matters, how the week around it feels, when to arrive and leave, where people stay, how access works, and which events come before and after it on the circuit.

Dates ExpectedNot yet published. National Polo Center releases its winter season schedule in the September before each season - the 2026 schedule was announced in September 2025 - so 2027 dates should appear within weeks of this record being written. The final has fallen on a Sunday in the second half of April in every recent year (23 April 2023, 21 April 2024, 20 April 2025, 26 April 2026); the last Sunday of April 2027 is 25 April, with league play from the start of the month.

The U.S. Open Polo Championship has been played since 1904 and is the senior title in American polo. It closes the Florida winter season at the National Polo Center in Wellington, running through April as a bracketed tournament and ending with a Sunday final on the club's main field. The handicap cap sits at 22 goals, lowered from 26 in 2019, which brought the American high goal into line with the British and made the field deeper.

Wellington in season is unlike any other polo setting. Within a few square miles sit the polo fields, the Winter Equestrian Festival showgrounds, hundreds of barns and a resident population of professional riders, grooms and horses that arrives in January and leaves in April. The U.S. Open is the last major event of that migration, and the final is where the season is signed off. On the ground the day works as a mix of grandstand seating, field-side boxes, tailgate spaces along the opposite side and Sunday brunch service, with the half-time divot stamping on the field as at any other club.

The polo itself is the best played in the Northern Hemisphere in that window. Argentine professionals who spend December to February at home come north for the Florida season, and the same names appear in Wellington in April and at Guards and Cowdray in June and July.

01Why it matters

This is the trophy that defines an American polo career, and its winners' list runs from Meadowbrook in the 1910s to the Argentine-led syndicates of the present. Its wider significance in the calendar is that it ends the Palm Beach winter: four months in which the equestrian world, the Palm Beach social season and a large seasonal population all occupy the same corner of Florida. In our reading the U.S. Open is less socially charged than the Queen's Cup and less deep than the Gold Cup, but it is the only one of the three that sits inside a full-scale resort season rather than beside a country town.

02The week around it

Wellington's season is winding down by late April. The Winter Equestrian Festival has finished, barns are shipping horses north to New York, Kentucky and Europe, and the town's temporary population is thinning week by week - which makes the U.S. Open final a closing ceremony as much as a sporting fixture. Palm Beach proper, twenty minutes east, is also emptying: the island's season runs from December to Easter and by the end of April the restaurants have begun to shorten their weeks. That makes this an unusually easy time to visit. Hotel rates on the island fall from their February peak, tables that are impossible in March open up, and the beaches and Worth Avenue are quiet. The polo is the busiest thing happening in the county that Sunday.

03When to arrive

Fly in Friday or Saturday, see a semi-final if the bracket allows, and take the Sunday for the final, which starts in the afternoon and finishes with the presentation before dinner. A Monday departure is comfortable. If the trip is being built around Wellington rather than the final, February and March are the busier and more interesting months on the showgrounds.

04Where to stay

Wellington itself has limited and mostly chain accommodation close to the fields, which is what most of the horse world uses. Palm Beach island, twenty to thirty minutes east, is the alternative with the better hotels and the shorter walk to dinner - The Breakers and the Colony are the landmarks - at the cost of a drive each way. West Palm Beach, between the two, is the practical middle: more rooms, easier parking, and the airport ten minutes away. Anyone attending a whole Florida season rents a house in Wellington, which is how the barns and playing families do it.

05Access and hospitality

The National Polo Center sells general admission for Sunday matches along with reserved field-side seating, boxes and tailgate spaces, and runs a Sunday brunch service through the season; the club's own site carries the current structure and prices. Access is comparatively easy by the standards of the calendar - this is a Sunday sporting outing in a suburb, not a members' occasion - and the final is the busiest day of the year but not a sellout in the way that a European high-goal final can be. The club's website blocks automated retrieval, so nothing here is quoted from it directly and no price or capacity is stated.

06Where the social activity happens

On the day, the tailgate line along the field, the pavilion and the brunch terrace, and the field itself at half time. Off it, the activity is diffuse: the Wellington equestrian corridor along South Shore Boulevard and Pierson Road has its own bars and casual restaurants that fill with grooms and riders, while anything dressier happens on Palm Beach island, along Worth Avenue and in the Royal Poinciana Plaza and Clematis Street districts of West Palm Beach. There is no single quarter where the polo crowd converges after the final.

07Getting there

Commercial aviationPalm Beach International (PBI) is about 25 minutes from the fields and has broad domestic service. Fort Lauderdale is an hour, Miami International about ninety minutes.
RailBrightline serves West Palm Beach from Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Orlando; from the station it is a 30-minute drive west to Wellington. Tri-Rail runs the local commuter line. Neither goes near the fields.
CarEssential. Wellington is a low-density suburb built around barns and paddocks and nothing is walkable. Southern Boulevard and Forest Hill Boulevard are the approaches from I-95 and the Florida Turnpike; parking at the club is on site.
Private aviationPalm Beach International handles the majority of business aviation for the county, with Lantana and North Palm Beach County (F45) as general-aviation alternatives. Traffic peaks in the January-to-March stretch rather than in April.

08Practicalities

DressFlorida spring resort dress. Men in linen or a lightweight jacket without a tie, women in day dresses; heels are a mistake because of the divot stamping and the grass. Sun protection matters more than anything sartorial - the final is played in the afternoon with almost no shade outside the covered seating.
WeatherLate April in Palm Beach County runs hot and humid: highs around 29 to 31C, lows near 21C, with roughly 80 to 100 mm of rain across the month and a rising chance of afternoon thunderstorms as the wet season approaches. Play stops for lightning.
Getting aroundRent a car or plan on ride-hailing, which is reliable in Palm Beach County but slow to reach the club when a match ends. Traffic on Forest Hill Boulevard backs up for around half an hour after the final.
HotelsApril is the shoulder of the Palm Beach season and rooms are far easier and cheaper than in February and March. A few weeks' notice is usually sufficient. If the trip is combined with the Winter Equestrian Festival in the earlier months, that is a different market entirely and needs booking in the autumn.
RestaurantsWellington's dining is functional and horse-adjacent. The serious kitchens are on Palm Beach island and in West Palm Beach, and by late April they are past their peak crush, so tables open up. Sunday brunch at the club is the day's own catering and is booked through the club rather than independently.
Reservation timingTailgate spaces and boxes for the final are sold during the season and the better positions along the field go first. Hotels need weeks rather than months in April. Nothing about this fixture is hard to arrange late.
TicketsSold by National Polo Center - Wellington through its own site, with general admission, reserved seating, boxes, tailgate spaces and brunch packages as the usual tiers. Prices are not reproduced here because the club's pages could not be read directly.
HospitalityThe club runs field-side boxes and a Sunday brunch service, and sponsors host their own guests. Nothing about the sponsor programmes is published as open to the public. The USPA also stages its own championship-week functions, which are not general-admission events.

09History

The championship began in 1904 at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx and spent its formative decades at Meadowbrook on Long Island, the club that made American polo an international force in the era of the Westchester Cup. It moved west to Oak Brook, Illinois from 1954, then to Retama in Texas, and through the late 1980s and 1990s it travelled between clubs before settling in Palm Beach County. Since 2004 it has been played at the Wellington ground formerly known as International Polo Club Palm Beach; the United States Polo Association acquired the club and renamed it the National Polo Center in 2022, so the governing body now owns the venue of its own championship. The 22-goal cap dates from 2019, the same year the USPA grouped the U.S. Open with the C. V. Whitney Cup and the USPA Gold Cup as a three-tournament series.

10Who is there

Team patrons and their families, the professional playing and grooming community resident in Wellington for the winter, equestrian families who have spent the season at the showgrounds, Palm Beach County residents and seasonal residents making a Sunday of it, sponsor guests, and a general local crowd. Less international than the British high goal and much more resident.
