The U.S. Open is the United States Golf Association's national championship and it is defined by two things: it is genuinely open, and it is set up to hurt. Any professional and any amateur with a handicap index below a published threshold may enter, and roughly half the 156-player field arrives through local qualifying over 18 holes and then final qualifying over 36 holes in a single day. The rest are exempt through world ranking, recent majors and tour results.

The championship moves between courses the USGA selects years ahead, mixing private clubs with public-access resorts: Shinnecock Hills in 2026, Pebble Beach in 2027. The setup follows the same philosophy wherever it lands, with narrowed fairways, punitive rough, firm greens and pin positions that leave little margin. Even par has won this championship more often than any other major.

This is the major that any golfer can, in principle, enter, and that fact still shapes how the championship is understood in the United States. In our reading the 2027 edition at Pebble Beach is one of the strongest weeks in the American calendar, and the 2026 Hamptons edition was another.

The championship's effect on its host area is proportional to the area's size. Pebble Beach in 2027 will absorb the Monterey Peninsula much as Monterey Car Week does in August, filling Carmel, Pacific Grove and the Highway 1 corridor.

Practice days from Monday to Wednesday are far quieter and are the only comfortable way to walk a full course at a U.S. Open; Wednesday is the busiest of the three.

TreinNone at Pebble Beach; the Monterey Peninsula has no passenger rail. Hamptons editions are served by the Long Island Rail Road to Southampton.
AutoA car is required. The USGA runs official park-and-ride sites with shuttles and closes local roads; on the Monterey Peninsula the 17-Mile Drive gates are the constraint.
PrivéluchtvaartMonterey Regional and Salinas serve the 2027 venue and will be heavily constrained; San Jose and Oakland are the overflow.
HelikopterCharter shuttles operate into both regions during major events, but there is no landing at either course.

DresscodeGolf clothing throughout, with layers that suit the venue: Pebble Beach in June is cool and often foggy until midday and a jacket is necessary even when the forecast says otherwise, while a Long Island June is warm with a stiff sea breeze.
WeerMid-June conditions vary entirely by venue. The Monterey Peninsula typically sees highs near 18C, about 64F, with morning marine fog that often does not clear until midday and cold evenings.

HotelsMajor-championship weeks at resort venues are priced and contracted like no other week of the year, and Pebble Beach's own accommodation is spoken for years ahead.
RestaurantsCarmel and Monterey have good capacity but book out for championship week from the previous autumn; the Lodge's restaurants at Pebble Beach are effectively closed to non-guests during the event.
ReserveringstimingTickets go on sale roughly a year ahead through the USGA's championship site, with hospitality earlier.
TicketsSold by the USGA on its own championship site: practice-day tickets, individual competition days and weekly badges, with on-course hospitality sold as upgrades. Volunteer applications open separately for each championship.
HospitalityThe USGA sells official on-course hospitality as venues sited around the course, combining reserved viewing with inclusive food and drink, alongside standard gallery admission.

The first U.S. Open was played in 1895 at Newport Country Club in Rhode Island, a 36-hole event contested by eleven players and won by an Englishman.
