The USGA's national championship, played on a different course each June and set up to be the hardest test in golf.
The U.S. Open is the United States Golf Association's national championship and it is defined by two things: it is genuinely open, and it is set up to hurt. Any professional and any amateur with a handicap index below a published threshold may enter, and roughly half the 156-player field arrives through local qualifying over 18 holes and then final qualifying over 36 holes in a single day. The rest are exempt through world ranking, recent majors and tour results.
The championship moves between courses the USGA selects years ahead, mixing private clubs with public-access resorts: Shinnecock Hills in 2026, Pebble Beach in 2027. The setup follows the same philosophy wherever it lands, with narrowed fairways, punitive rough, firm greens and pin positions that leave little margin. Even par has won this championship more often than any other major.
01Por qué es relevante
This is the major that any golfer can, in principle, enter, and that fact still shapes how the championship is understood in the United States. In our reading the 2027 edition at Pebble Beach is one of the strongest weeks in the American calendar, and the 2026 Hamptons edition was another.
02La semana en torno al evento
The championship's effect on its host area is proportional to the area's size. Pebble Beach in 2027 will absorb the Monterey Peninsula much as Monterey Car Week does in August, filling Carmel, Pacific Grove and the Highway 1 corridor.
03Cuándo llegar
Practice days from Monday to Wednesday are far quieter and are the only comfortable way to walk a full course at a U.S. Open; Wednesday is the busiest of the three.
04Dónde alojarse
Venue-dependent.
05Acceso y hospitalidad
The USGA sells tickets through its own championship site, by practice day, by competition day and as weekly badges, and maintains a dedicated site for each edition with ticket, volunteer and travel pages.
06Dónde tiene lugar la actividad social
Public life during the week belongs to the host area.

09Historia
The first U.S. Open was played in 1895 at Newport Country Club in Rhode Island, a 36-hole event contested by eleven players and won by an Englishman.
10Quién está ahí
An American golf audience above all: club golfers travelling from across the country, the game's trade and equipment industry, corporate hospitality from national and regional business, and, at the marquee venues, a substantial international contingent combining the championship with a golf trip.

The USGA maintains a dedicated 2027 championship site with ticket and volunteer pages; that site returned an access error to automated retrieval, so the dates here follow reporting and the championship's fixed Father's Day finish. |
