A capped, garden-party motorsports gathering on the Quail Lodge lawns, held on the Friday of Monterey Car Week.

Roughly two hundred cars and motorcycles are set out on the fairways of Quail Lodge & Golf Club for a single day, in the warm inland pocket of Carmel Valley about fifteen minutes from the coast. It is judged, with classes covering prewar coachwork, postwar sports racing cars, custom and pre-war motorcycles and a strong contemporary supercar presence, but the competition is not the point in the way it is at Pebble Beach. The organizer caps attendance deliberately, and the day is built around food and drink pavilions spread across the grass, manufacturer stands showing new limited-series cars, and long unhurried conversations between owners.
The Peninsula Hotels owns Quail Lodge and runs the event. Its Best of Show winner is eligible for the Peninsula Classics Best of the Best Award, which pits the year's top concours winners from around the world against each other at a separate ceremony. Broad Arrow Auctions stages its Quail Auction at the club over the Thursday and Friday, so the auction preview and the gathering share a site, and the Quail Rally and an evening reception fill out a small program around the main day.
What distinguishes The Quail from the rest of the week is the ratio of people to cars. Pebble Beach admits around fifteen thousand spectators; The Quail admits a fraction of that, and the difference is immediately visible in how easily you can stand in front of a car and talk to the person who owns it.
01Warum es relevant ist
The Quail has become the day of Monterey Car Week when manufacturers make their most significant reveals. Low-volume makers in particular use the lawn because the audience is small, wealthy, and almost entirely composed of people who buy cars of that kind; a reveal here reaches the right two hundred people rather than the wrong twenty thousand. The organizer's ticket cap, which is enforced rather than nominal, is what creates that condition and is the reason the ticket is the hardest of the week.
In our reading, its importance is social rather than scholarly. Pebble Beach determines what a car is worth in the record books; The Quail is where the collecting world actually talks to itself, and where a great deal of the week's private trading gets agreed before the auctions clear it.
02Die Woche darum
Friday is the pivot of Monterey Car Week and The Quail is why. Carmel Valley Road carries heavy one-directional traffic all morning, and the drive from the coast that normally takes twenty minutes takes an hour. Anyone not attending should treat the Friday as the day to be somewhere else on the peninsula — Laguna Seca, the Monterey auction previews, or Carmel-by-the-Sea, which is unusually quiet during the day and very busy after five as the Quail crowd comes back down the valley. The Broad Arrow sale at the club and the Gooding and RM Sotheby's sessions in Pebble Beach and Monterey run on the same day, so the auction results that set the week's tone arrive Friday night.
03Anreisezeitpunkt
Attendees should be on Carmel Valley Road early; the gates open in the morning and the middle of the day is when the lawn is fullest and hottest. Most people arrive by shuttle from designated lots rather than driving in. Leave before the announced close if you want to reach Carmel or Monterey at a reasonable hour, or stay to the end and eat in the valley.
04Unterkunft
Carmel Valley itself is the obvious base for this one day — Quail Lodge and the Bernardus property are the landmarks — and it is warmer, quieter and greener than the coast. The trade-off is that everything else in car week is over the hill, on a road that is congested all week. Most visitors stay in Carmel-by-the-Sea or Monterey and treat The Quail as a day trip. Anyone attending only this event and the Concours could reasonably stay in the valley the whole time.
05Zugang und Hospitality
Tickets are limited and sold in advance through the organizer's ticketing partner; there is no gate sale and the event reliably sells out. The organizer has in recent years used a registration or waitlist process rather than open sale, and returning attendees receive priority. Admission is all-inclusive in the sense that food and drink across the lawn are covered by the ticket. Displaying a car is by application and invitation only. Third-party resale listings for this event circulate at prices far above face value; those are not the organizer's prices and should not be read as such.
06Wo das gesellschaftliche Geschehen stattfindet
The whole event is the social activity — the pavilions along the fairway, the shaded areas near the clubhouse and the manufacturer stands are where people gather, and the day has no spectator-versus-participant division. Off-site, the Quail Lodge clubhouse and the valley's restaurants carry the evening. Down on the coast, Carmel-by-the-Sea's bars and courtyards absorb the crowd after the event closes.

09Geschichte
The event began in 2003 as a modest gathering at Quail Lodge, then a golf resort with no particular automotive identity, and grew as Monterey Car Week expanded from a weekend into a full week and needed a Friday. Its scale and format have stayed close to the original: capped attendance, food across the lawn, no grandstands. The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels bought Quail Lodge in 2010 and reopened it under the Peninsula name, later attaching the Peninsula brand to the gathering itself and creating the Peninsula Classics Best of the Best Award in 2016 to link the world's leading concours. The 2020 edition was cancelled during the pandemic; the event returned in 2021 and has run since.
10Wer ist dort
Owners and collectors, a high proportion of them repeat attendees; manufacturer executives and design staff presenting new models; dealers, brokers and restorers; auction house specialists working the adjoining sale; and a small number of media. The demographic is narrower and more uniformly involved in the collecting world than any other public day of Monterey Car Week.
