PGA golf professional Adam Scott chips out of the trap for par on #3 during the 2008 The Players Championship

The Players Championship is the PGA Tour's flagship tournament, run by the tour itself at a course the tour built, beside its own headquarters in Ponte Vedra Beach. Deane Beman created it in 1974 and moved it in 1982 to the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, a Pete Dye design conceived as a spectator amphitheatre with mounding built around the holes so that crowds could see. That idea, ordinary now, was new then.

The field is 120 players, the strongest non-major field of the year by world ranking, and the purse of USD 25,000,000 is the largest in golf. Everything funnels toward the closing stretch: the par-three 17th, with its green on an island in a man-made lake, produces a running tally of balls in the water that the tour publishes as the week goes on, and the long 18th follows it with water down the entire left side.

01Why it matters

This is the tour's own showpiece and it is usually the first week of the year when the whole field is present and playing seriously. In our reading it is a golf tournament rather than a social occasion: the surrounding week belongs to northeast Florida rather than to any international calendar, and the reason to come is the course and the closing holes.

02The week around it

Ponte Vedra Beach is a quiet coastal suburb between Jacksonville and St Augustine, and the tournament is by a wide margin its largest week of the year.

The tour's own hospitality operation is extensive and concentrated on the 16th, 17th and 18th holes, and the corporate presence is drawn from national sponsors rather than from a local business community.

03When to arrive

Practice and pro-am days from Monday to Wednesday are cheap, quiet and the only comfortable way to stand at the 17th. Thursday and Friday give both halves of the draw.

04Where to stay

The Ponte Vedra resort corridor along A1A is closest, with the largest property adjoining the course, and it is where most of the tournament's own traffic stays; it books early and prices accordingly.

05Access and hospitality

The PGA Tour sells tickets directly through the tournament site and its ticketing partner, by day and for the week, with practice-round tickets cheaper and separately sold; the platform lists individual competition days by date well ahead.

06Where the social activity happens

On the course, the public gathering points are the grandstands and mounding around the 16th, 17th and 18th, the spectator village, and the merchandise pavilion; the hospitality venues along the closing holes are closed.

07Getting there

Commercial aviationJacksonville International is about forty minutes from TPC Sawgrass; Orlando and Daytona Beach are only worth considering for connections.
RailNone useful. Amtrak calls at Jacksonville but not in a way any visitor should plan around.
CarA car is required. The tour runs park-and-ride sites with shuttles and closes local roads; A1A and Butler Boulevard both back up at session change.
Private aviationJacksonville Executive at Craig is the closest business-aviation field, with St Augustine and Cecil as alternatives.
HelicopterNo landing at the venue and no published shuttle; charter operates within northeast Florida.
MarinasThe Intracoastal Waterway runs west of the course, with marinas at Jacksonville, Palm Valley and St Augustine.

08Practicalities

DressFlorida golf clothing: light layers, a hat and sunglasses, and something warmer for the evening, since March nights on this coast drop into the low teens Celsius and a passing cold front can take the daytime temperature with it.
WeatherMid-March in northeast Florida typically brings daily highs around 23 to 25C, about 74 to 77F, with lows near 12C and moderate humidity.
Getting aroundUse the official park-and-ride; there is no spectator parking at the course. Allow an hour from Jacksonville on tournament mornings and considerably more on Saturday.
HotelsThe Ponte Vedra and Jacksonville Beach corridor fills for the week and rates roughly double, but northeast Florida has deep capacity and rooms remain obtainable at two to three months' notice further from the course.
RestaurantsPonte Vedra's resort dining rooms are committed to tournament business for the week.
Reservation timingTickets go on sale from the preceding autumn and remain available late. Hospitality is contracted from the summer before.
TicketsSold by the PGA Tour through the tournament site and its ticketing partner: practice days, individual competition days and weekly tickets, with dated listings published well ahead.
HospitalityThe tour sells official hospitality directly, comprising course-side venues, suites and club facilities concentrated on the 16th, 17th and 18th holes, with inclusive food and drink.

09History

Deane Beman, as commissioner, created the tournament in 1974 as an event owned and run by the players rather than by a sponsor or a governing body, and it moved between Florida venues for its first eight years.

10Who is there

A largely American golf crowd with a strong Florida and southeastern core, the PGA Tour's national sponsors and their corporate guests, the golf industry in full given the tour's headquarters next door, and a modest international contingent, mostly players' followings and travelling golf groups.
