The famous Swilcan Bridge crossing the burn on the approach to the 18th green of the Old Course, The Open Championship

The Open was first played in 1860 at Prestwick and is the oldest championship in golf. The R&A runs it, and it moves each year between a rota of links courses on the coasts of Scotland, England and Northern Ireland: St Andrews, Muirfield, Carnoustie, Royal Troon, Royal Birkdale, Royal Liverpool, Royal Lytham and St Annes, Royal St George's and Royal Portrush. St Andrews returns roughly every five years and takes the numbered anniversary editions; Turnberry is not in the foreseeable schedule.

The field is 156 players, the largest of the four majors, and the route in is broader than at any other. Exemptions cover the top of the world ranking, recent major and tour winners and past champions within an age limit; the remaining places come from the Open Qualifying Series on tours around the world and from Final Qualifying, played over 36 holes in a single day at four links courses. That last route is why club professionals and amateurs regularly appear in the draw.

What distinguishes The Open on the ground is the course and the weather acting together. Links land is firm, treeless and shaped by wind rather than by design, the ball runs, and a morning draw and an afternoon draw can be playing two different championships. The Claret Jug is presented on the 18th green as soon as the last card is signed.

01Waarom het relevant is

The Open is the only major played outside the United States and the only one played on links, which makes it the championship that most directly connects the modern game to where it came from. It is also, in practice, golf's international gathering: the field is the most globally drawn of the four, the qualifying routes admit players from every tour, and the spectator crowd travels from further away than at any other tournament in the sport. In our reading, its place in the wider calendar comes from geography as much as from history.

02De week eromheen

The Open is the largest event most of its host towns will ever stage, and the effect on them is total.

At St Andrews the effect is different in kind, because the course runs into the town: the 18th fairway ends at the R&A clubhouse a few steps from the shops on Golf Place, and the whole town becomes the event.

03Wanneer aan te komen

Practice days, Monday to Wednesday, are cheaper, quieter and the best chance to walk the whole course with players on it; at St Andrews they are also the only realistic way to stand close to the first tee.

04Waar te verblijven

This changes entirely with the venue. For St Andrews in 2027, the town itself has limited hotel stock and it is taken years ahead; the university lets student residences for the championship, which is the most reliable route to a bed in town, and the practical alternatives are Dundee, twenty minutes north across the Tay, the villages of the East Neuk to the south, and Edinburgh at about an hour and twenty minutes.

05Toegang en hospitality

The R&A allocates general admission through a public ticket ballot, entered free online, with successful applicants notified and charged afterwards; for the 2027 championship at St Andrews the ballot closed at 3pm on Friday 24 July 2026, roughly a year ahead. Tickets are issued for individual practice and competition days, and the R&A has for some years operated a policy admitting children and young people free or at nominal cost when accompanied, which it publishes with each championship. Beyond the ballot, the R&A publishes three levels of paid access on its own tickets page for St Andrews 2027: Ticket Plus, which adds a private area with food and drink available to buy and a choice of covered or outdoor seating; Hospitality, which includes the ticket, premium viewing over the Old Course and fully inclusive dining and drinks; and a Tickets and Camping package pairing a ticket with a campsite a short walk from the course. Hospitality is sold in several locations around the links.

06Waar de sociale activiteit plaatsvindt

On the course, the public gathering points are the grandstands around the closing holes, the spectator village with its merchandise and food pavilions, and the practice ground. At St Andrews the town does the rest: the pubs and hotel bars along Golf Place, Market Street and North Street, the Jigger Inn beside the 17th, and the Links itself, which is public ground and stays walkable.

07Hoe u er komt

Commerciële luchtvaartDepends on the venue. For St Andrews in 2027, Edinburgh is the main airport at about an hour and twenty minutes by road, with Glasgow and Dundee as alternatives.
TreinLinks courses are unusually well served. Leuchars, five miles from St Andrews, takes the east coast main line with shuttle buses to the town; Hillside and Southport stations sit beside Royal Birkdale on Merseyrail. Rail is the recommended route at almost every venue.
AutoHost towns are small and the R&A runs official park-and-ride sites some distance from each course, which are the only realistic parking.
PrivéluchtvaartEdinburgh, Dundee and Glasgow Prestwick serve the Scottish venues; Liverpool, Manchester and Hawarden serve the northwest English ones.
HelikopterCharter operators run shuttles into temporary landing sites near several Open venues, arranged through the championship's official transport partners; there is no landing on the links itself.
JachthavensNot generally relevant, though the Fife coast harbours at Anstruther and Crail and the Tay estuary offer limited berthing during the St Andrews editions.

08Praktische informatie

DresscodePractical above all. Waterproof jacket and trousers, warm layers, and shoes that will take six hours on wet links grass; the wind on an exposed coast makes an eighteen-degree day feel considerably colder.
WeerMid-July on the British links coasts typically brings daily highs of 18 to 20C, about 64 to 68F, with lows near 12C. Wind is the defining variable and can reach a strength that suspends play; rain arrives in bands rather than for whole days. Long northern daylight lets the R&A absorb delays.
Verplaatsing ter plaatseUse the train and the official park-and-ride and do not attempt to drive to the course.
HotelsHost-town accommodation is taken twelve to eighteen months ahead and prices for championship week are several times the annual norm. House rentals are the main market at the smaller venues.
RestaurantsHost towns have limited capacity and the good tables are contracted from the previous summer, much of it by corporate groups. Pubs absorb the walk-in trade well.
ReserveringstimingThe ticket ballot runs about a year ahead and closes in the summer preceding the championship.
TicketsGeneral admission is allocated by a free-to-enter public ballot run by the R&A, with tickets sold by day for practice and competition rounds. The R&A publishes concessions for young spectators with each championship. The 2027 ballot at St Andrews closed at 3pm on 24 July 2026.
HospitalityThe R&A publishes three paid tiers for St Andrews 2027: Ticket Plus, an official ticket with access to a private area, seating and food and drink available to buy; Hospitality, an official ticket with premium course-side viewing and fully inclusive dining and drinks; and Tickets and Camping, a ticket packaged with a campsite near the course.

09Geschiedenis

The first championship, in 1860, was a 36-hole competition among eight professionals at Prestwick, and the winner received a belt rather than a trophy. The Claret Jug replaced it in 1872 and the championship began to move between Prestwick, St Andrews and Musselburgh, expanding onto English links from 1894.

10Wie is er

The most international crowd in golf: British and Irish followers who travel to whichever venue is hosting, a very large American contingent that treats the week as a golf pilgrimage, continental European and Asian visitors in growing numbers, the game's own trade and equipment industry, and corporate hospitality drawn from British and multinational business.
