50 East 96th Street, 1369-1371 Madison Avenue, Carnegie Hill, Upper East Side, Manhattan, TEFAF New York January 25, 2026 Snow Storm in Manhattan, 93rd Street between Madison and 5th Avenue, Carnegie Hill, Upper East Side, New, TEFAF New York January 25, 2026 Snow Storm in Manhattan, Madison Avenue @ 93rd Street, Carnegie Hill, Upper East Side, New York City, TEFAF New York Built in 1899, this castle-like Richardsonian Romanesque Revival-style building was designed by Issac G. Perry and Captain, TEFAF New York

TEFAF New York is a fifth the size of the Maastricht fair and reads entirely differently because of the building it is in. The Park Avenue Armory's drill hall takes the booths, but the fair also uses the sixteen period rooms on the first and second floors, decorated in the 1880s by Louis Comfort Tiffany, Stanford White, the Herter Brothers and others, and the presentations installed in those rooms are the reason to come. The 2026 edition brought 88 exhibitors from 14 countries, with material tilted toward what an American audience buys: modern and contemporary art, twentieth-century and contemporary design, jewelry and antiquities, with less Old Master painting than the Dutch fair carries. TEFAF's vetting applies here as it does in Maastricht.

01Por que importa

New York's May week is dominated by the evening auctions and, since 2012, by Frieze. TEFAF New York's function is to give the historical and decorative arts trade a place in a week that otherwise belongs to contemporary material, and to give American curators in those fields a reason to attend something other than a sale.

Our reading is that its value is disproportionate to its size. It is small, easy to see in an afternoon, and the only fair in the city where a serious antiquity, a Tiffany interior and a contemporary design commission are in the same building.

02A semana ao seu redor

TEFAF New York sits in the middle of the city's busiest art fortnight. The May evening auctions at Christie's, Sotheby's and Phillips run in the same days, and their previews are free and open for several days beforehand; Sotheby's Madison Avenue building is a short walk from the Armory. Frieze New York at The Shed usually overlaps or immediately precedes, along with Independent in Tribeca and NADA New York. The Upper East Side is the fair's natural extension: the Metropolitan Museum, the Frick Collection, the Guggenheim and the Neue Galerie are all within twenty minutes on foot, and Madison Avenue's galleries and antique dealers open shows to the week.

03Quando chegar

Wednesday if you hold a preview invitation, which gives Thursday at the fair and the evening free. On a public ticket, Friday or Saturday morning is best, and Monday and Tuesday are the quietest and most rewarding days of the run. The fair takes two to three hours; plan the rest of the day around the auction previews and the Museum Mile.

04Onde se hospedar

The Upper East Side is the obvious base and the one that makes the week walkable: the Armory, Sotheby's, the museums and the Madison Avenue galleries are within twenty minutes on foot, and the Carlyle, the Mark and the Lowell are the landmark addresses. Midtown around Central Park South has far more rooms. Downtown, in Tribeca or SoHo, is better for anyone whose week is really about Frieze and the satellite fairs.

05Acesso e hospitalidade

One invitation-only collectors' preview precedes the public run; invitations are issued by TEFAF and by exhibiting dealers and are not sold. Public tickets for the five days are sold on tefaf.com and at the Armory, with prices published by the organizer each year and not reproduced here. TEFAF's vetting applies to every object on show. Free alternatives during the same week are substantial: the auction previews at all three houses are open to anyone.

06Onde ocorre a actividade social

The Armory's own bars and the restaurant installed for the fair are the meeting points, and the period rooms function as informal sitting rooms during the run. Outside, the week's geography for this audience is the Upper East Side: the Madison Avenue galleries between 64th and 79th Streets, the bars at the Carlyle and the Mark, and the Sotheby's lobby during preview days. Central Park is directly west of the Armory and the pleasantest way to move between the fair and the museums.

07Como chegar

Aviação comercialJFK, LaGuardia and Newark all serve the city. LaGuardia is closest to the Upper East Side by road, about 30 minutes outside peak hours; JFK is best reached by the AirTrain and Long Island Rail Road to Grand Central.
ComboioGrand Central Terminal is fifteen minutes from the Armory by subway or twenty on foot, and Metro-North serves Westchester and Connecticut. Penn Station and Moynihan Train Hall handle Amtrak's Northeast Corridor. The 6 train at 68th Street and the Q at 72nd Street are the closest subway stops.
AutomóvelDriving in Manhattan is slow and parking on the Upper East Side is expensive; congestion pricing applies south of 60th Street, which includes most of the route from downtown. Walking and the subway are faster for everything the week involves.
Aviação privadaTeterboro in New Jersey and Westchester County Airport are the usual business aviation options, both about 40 minutes from the Upper East Side outside peak traffic; Republic on Long Island and Morristown take the overflow.
HelicópteroThe East 34th Street and West 30th Street heliports handle transfers to Teterboro and the Hamptons; the East Side heliport is the closer of the two to the Armory.
MarinasNorth Cove Marina in Battery Park City and Chelsea Piers on the Hudson take visiting yachts; there is no berthing near the Upper East Side.

08Aspectos práticos

TrajeThe Upper East Side setting shows: this is the best-dressed art fair in New York, and jackets are usual on the preview day and common throughout. Mid-May in the city can be warm, so lightweight tailoring works. Nothing published requires formal dress.
ClimaMid-May in New York is mild, with daytime highs typically around twenty to twenty-two Celsius, cool evenings and periodic rain. The walk between the Armory, the museums and Central Park is usually comfortable. Description is qualitative; no station normals were sourced.
Deslocação e transporteThe Upper East Side is walkable and the fair, Sotheby's and the Museum Mile are all within twenty-five minutes on foot of each other. The 6 and Q subway lines run directly beneath Lexington and Second Avenues. Taxis are easy to find on Park and Madison but slow at rush hour; crosstown travel through Central Park is the bottleneck.
HotéisThe May auction week rather than the fair is what raises Upper East Side and Midtown rates. Rooms remain available a few weeks out in most of the city, though the small Upper East Side hotels fill first. Downtown is generally easier and cheaper.
RestaurantesUpper East Side restaurants tighten during the week and dealers take private rooms for client dinners. Booking two to three weeks ahead covers most of it. Midtown and downtown absorb walk-ins comfortably.
Prazo para reservasHotels three to four weeks ahead. Restaurants two to three weeks on the Upper East Side. Public tickets are sold online in advance and at the Armory; the first weekend is the busiest.
IngressosDay tickets for the five public days are sold on tefaf.com and at the Park Avenue Armory. Prices are published by the organizer each year and are not reproduced here. The collectors' preview is by invitation only and is not sold. The auction house previews across the same week are free and open to the public.
HospitalidadePreview invitations come from TEFAF and from exhibiting dealers rather than being sold. On-site hospitality is confined to the fair's own bars and restaurant, both open to ticket holders. There is no publicly purchasable VIP package. Museum and auction house client programmes running that week are separate from the fair.

09Histórico

TEFAF opened in New York in 2016 with two fairs a year at the Park Avenue Armory: a spring edition for modern and contemporary work and design, and a fall edition covering art from antiquity to about 1920. The pairing was the foundation's answer to the American market's split between historical and contemporary buying. In 2021 TEFAF announced it would stop running two New York fairs and consolidated to the single spring edition, which has run annually since.

10Quem está presente

American collectors of historical material, decorative arts, design and jewelry; museum curators and acquisition committees from East Coast institutions; the Madison Avenue and European historical trade; and an overlap audience in the city for the May auctions and for Frieze. The mix is older and more design-oriented than the contemporary fairs sharing the week.
