TEFAF Maastricht is not a contemporary art fair with some antiques attached; it is the other way round. Around 275 dealers from more than twenty countries fill the MECC exhibition centre with material spanning roughly seven thousand years, arranged in ten sections that read as a map of the trade itself: paintings, antiques, ancient art, tribal art, works on paper, modern, design, high jewellery, and two smaller strands for curated projects and for newer galleries.

What separates it from every other fair is vetting. Before the doors open, teams of specialists, roughly 175 experts working across 29 categories, examine every object on every stand for authenticity, condition and quality, and remove what fails. Dealers are excluded from their own stands during the process. The effect is that a visitor can look at an object here with a confidence available almost nowhere else in the trade, and it is the reason museum curators treat the fair as a working tool rather than a social occasion.

The experience is deliberately unhurried. The fair runs eight days including previews, twice the length of most contemporary fairs, because the material rewards slow looking and because a serious acquisition here can take days rather than minutes. The MECC's aisles are laid out around vast floral installations, which is the single most photographed thing about the fair and, more practically, the thing that makes a convention hall feel like a building worth spending a day in.

01重要性说明

TEFAF is the fixed point of the historical art market. Museum acquisition committees plan around it; the fair reports that representatives of well over two hundred museums attend, and a meaningful share of European and American institutional buying in Old Masters, antiquities and decorative arts happens in this hall in March. For the dealers in those fields, many of whom no longer keep public galleries, it is the largest single trading opportunity of their year.

Our reading is that the vetting is the whole product. Contemporary fairs sell access to artists and to a moment; TEFAF sells the assurance that what is on the wall is what the label says. That is a harder thing to build and a much harder thing to copy, and it is why a fair held in a Dutch provincial city of 120,000 people commands a week of the international calendar.

02前后一周

Maastricht is a small city and TEFAF week transforms it completely. The fair is the event; there is no satellite fair circuit of the kind Basel or Miami generate, and the surrounding programme is the city itself. The old town across the Maas is compact and entirely walkable, centred on the Vrijthof with its two churches and its terraces, and the Onze Lieve Vrouweplein a few minutes south. The Bonnefanten Museum, in Aldo Rossi's tower on the east bank, holds the region's main collection and programmes to the fair. The Sphinxkwartier, a converted ceramics factory district north of the centre, holds the Lumière cinema and the bookshop in the former Dominican church.

The practical story of the week is accommodation. Maastricht has nowhere near enough hotel rooms, so the fair's audience sleeps across three countries: Aachen and Cologne in Germany, Liège and Brussels in Belgium, Eindhoven and Amsterdam in the Netherlands, and the villages of South Limburg. Maastricht Aachen Airport handles one of its busiest weeks of the year, and the roads into the city from the German and Belgian borders carry traffic they were not designed for. Restaurants in the old town are booked out weeks ahead, and the fair's own restaurants and oyster bars absorb much of the daytime.

03抵达时间

If you hold a preview invitation, arrive Wednesday evening for the Thursday opening; the first morning is when institutional buying happens and the fair is at its quietest and best. With a public ticket, the first weekend is busy and the following Monday to Wednesday are the pleasantest days of the run, when the aisles empty out and dealers have time to talk. The final Thursday is quiet but the best material has gone. Two full days is the right length for a serious visitor; one long day is enough to see the fair without absorbing it.

04住宿地点

Maastricht's own hotels, concentrated in the old town on the west bank and in the Wyck district by the station on the east, are booked a year ahead by returning dealers and collectors. The Kruisherenhotel, in a converted fifteenth-century monastery, and the hotels around the Vrijthof are the landmark addresses. Beyond the city, the country-house hotels of South Limburg, around Valkenburg and the Geul valley, are twenty to thirty minutes away and are the pleasant alternative. Aachen is 35 minutes by road and Liège 40; Brussels, Cologne, Düsseldorf and Eindhoven are all within about ninety minutes and are what most late bookers use. Staying outside the city is normal here and carries no stigma.

05出入与接待

TEFAF runs two invitation-only preview days before the public opening, and invitations are issued by the foundation and by exhibiting dealers to their own clients and to museum groups; they are not sold. The public run of six days is straightforwardly ticketed, with day tickets and multi-day passes sold on tefaf.com and at the MECC, and opening hours published as 11am to 7pm. Prices are set each year by the organizer and are not reproduced here. There is no membership scheme comparable to Frieze's. The fair's own hospitality is unusually good and unusually visible: the champagne and oyster bars in the entrance hall are open to any ticket holder, which is not true of the equivalent at most fairs.

06社交活动场所

Inside the fair, the entrance hall with its floral installation and its bars is the meeting point, and the aisle restaurants function as the week's dining rooms. In the city, the Vrijthof's terraces and the cafés on the Onze Lieve Vrouweplein carry the early evening; the streets of the old town between them, particularly the Stokstraat and the Wolfstraat, hold the small restaurants that fill with the trade. Wyck, across the Sint Servaasbrug by the station, is quieter and has the newer places. The Kruisherenhotel's bar in its converted church nave is the most reliable public crossroads of the week. Beyond that, Maastricht's social life during TEFAF happens in private dining rooms and in the country houses of South Limburg, and is not accessible to a visitor without an invitation.

07如何抵达

商业航空Maastricht Aachen (MST) is 20 minutes from the centre but has few scheduled routes. Most visitors fly to Brussels (BRU), Düsseldorf (DUS), Cologne-Bonn (CGN), Eindhoven (EIN) or Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) and continue by train or road, all between one and two and a half hours away.
铁路Maastricht station is on the Dutch intercity network with direct services to Eindhoven, Utrecht and Amsterdam in about two and a half hours, and connections to Liège, from where Brussels, Paris and Cologne are reachable by high-speed rail. Eurostar to Brussels and onward is the usual route from London. The station is a fifteen-minute walk from the old town and a short bus or taxi ride from the MECC.
汽车Maastricht sits close to both the Belgian and German borders and most regional visitors drive; the A2 and A79 connect to the Dutch and German motorway networks. Parking at the MECC is organized for the fair and fills early. The old town is largely pedestrian and its car parks are small.
私人航空Maastricht Aachen Airport handles a substantial business aviation volume during TEFAF week and is the closest option; Liège, Brussels, Düsseldorf and Eindhoven take the overflow, and parking at MST is arranged well in advance.
直升机Charter helicopter transfers operate into Maastricht Aachen and to sites near the city during the fair, subject to Dutch permissions; there is no permanent public heliport in the city.
游艇港The Maas is navigable and Maastricht has moorings at the Bassin and along the river for inland craft; there is no seagoing yacht berthing.

08实用信息

着装The most formally dressed of the major fairs. Tailoring is the norm on preview days and jackets are usual throughout; this is an older and more conservative audience than Basel's or Frieze's. March in Limburg is cold and often wet, so a proper coat is necessary for the walk between the MECC and the old town.
天气Mid-March in Maastricht is cold and changeable, with daytime highs typically around ten Celsius, nights near freezing, and frequent rain. Daylight is lengthening but evenings are dark and cold. Description is qualitative; no station normals were sourced.
周边交通The MECC is about twenty minutes' walk or a short bus ride from the old town, and the fair runs shuttle services from the station and from designated hotels during the run. Traffic into Maastricht from the German and Belgian borders is heavy on the preview days and the first weekend. Within the city, walking is the only sensible option; the old town is mostly pedestrian.
酒店This is the tightest accommodation market of any fair on the circuit relative to the city's size. Maastricht's own hotels are effectively fully booked by returning exhibitors and collectors a year in advance, and rates rise steeply. Planning to stay in Aachen, Liège, Eindhoven, Brussels or the South Limburg countryside is the normal solution rather than a fallback.
餐厅Old town restaurants are booked several weeks ahead for the fair week and dealers take private rooms for client dinners. The fair's own restaurants and bars inside the MECC are extensive and absorb most of the daytime demand. Wyck and the Sphinxkwartier hold availability longest.
预订时间Hotels in Maastricht itself should be booked as much as a year ahead; the surrounding region six months. Restaurants in the old town four to six weeks. Public tickets are sold online in advance and at the door, and the first weekend is the busiest.
门票Day tickets and multi-day passes for the six public days are sold on tefaf.com and at the MECC, with published opening hours of 11am to 7pm. The organizer sets prices each year and they are not reproduced here. The two preview days are by invitation only and are not sold. The Bonnefanten Museum and the city's churches charge their own separate admission.
接待活动Preview invitations are issued by TEFAF and by exhibiting dealers rather than sold, and museum groups are hosted directly by the foundation. On-site hospitality is generous by fair standards and largely open to ordinary ticket holders, including the entrance-hall champagne and oyster bars and the aisle restaurants. There is no publicly purchasable VIP package.

09历史

The fair descends from two smaller Dutch events, Pictura Fine Art Fair, founded in 1975 in Maastricht, and Antiquairs International, and took its present form as The European Fine Art Fair in 1988. It expanded steadily through the 1990s and 2000s into the dominant fair for pre-modern material, and from 2000 the foundation has published an annual Art Market Report that is one of the two standard statistical accounts of the global trade.

TEFAF opened New York editions at the Park Avenue Armory in 2016, initially running both a spring and a fall fair, and consolidated to a single spring edition in 2021. The Maastricht fair itself has changed less. Its most visible recent adjustment has been shortening from ten days to a six-day public run with two preview days, a concession to how dealers and buyers actually use the week.

Museum directors, curators and acquisition committees in greater numbers than at any other fair, from Europe and North America in particular; private collectors of Old Masters, antiquities, decorative arts and jewellery, generally older and more specialist than a contemporary fair's audience; the historical trade in full, including dealers who no longer keep open galleries; conservators, scholars and provenance researchers; and a substantial Dutch, Belgian and German public across the six public days.
