The Super Bowl is a single football game and, around it, the largest annual commercial and civic operation in American sport. The NFL awards the game to a city years ahead by a vote of club owners, which is why the location and date of the next several are known long before anyone knows who will play. The requirements are essentially climatic and logistical - a warm-weather market or a covered stadium, and enough hotel rooms and airlift within reach - which is why the rotation keeps returning to Florida, Texas, Arizona, Nevada, southern California and New Orleans.

The week that precedes it is a fixture in its own right and is far more accessible than the game. Opening Night puts both teams in front of the world's media in an arena that sells tickets to the public; the NFL's fan event runs for several days in the host city's convention centre; the league's awards show is staged there; and the host committee programmes concerts, exhibitions and street events across the city. Broadcasters take over a hall for radio row. For most visitors in town that week, none of it involves the stadium.

The game itself begins in the late afternoon local time and runs close to four hours with the halftime show in the middle - a twelve to fifteen minute production that is now a booking of its own and draws an audience comparable to the football.

01Waarom het relevant is

The Super Bowl is the largest single-day television event in the United States and one of the largest anywhere, and its economics have made it the reference point for what a sporting occasion can be worth to a broadcaster, an advertiser and a city. For the international calendar its interest is threefold: it is the one American sporting date that draws a genuinely global audience, it rotates so the destination changes every year, and its ticket economics are the most extreme of any event in this record. Face-value tickets barely reach the public - the NFL distributes the great majority to the two competing clubs, the host club and the other franchises, with only a small allocation reaching a public lottery - so almost everyone who attends without a club connection has bought on the secondary market or through the league's own hospitality operator. In our reading, the honest advice is that the week is worth travelling for and the game is not, unless the ticket arrives through a route you already have.

02De week eromheen

The host city is rearranged for ten days. Hotel inventory across the metropolitan area is taken by the league, the teams, the broadcasters and the corporate market, with rates several times normal and minimum-stay conditions; downtown streets around the convention centre and the fan events are closed or restricted; and airport traffic peaks on the Friday in and the Monday out, when private aviation movements at the host city's business airports set annual records. The public side is substantial - the fan experience event, concerts, the host committee's programming and a great deal of free street activity - and it is what most visitors actually attend. The corporate week runs in parallel in hotel ballrooms and private venues and is not open. For a visitor with no ticket, the Saturday is the best day: the fan events are at full stretch and the city is at its liveliest before it empties on Sunday evening.

03Wanneer aan te komen

Arrive Thursday or Friday. The fan events and the host committee's programme run through the weekend, the city is at its most interesting on the Friday and Saturday, and Sunday itself is largely spent getting to and from a stadium. Leave on the Monday or, better, the Tuesday - Monday morning departures from a Super Bowl host airport are the worst travel of the American year. If the game is not the point of the trip, consider arriving the week before and leaving on the Saturday, which gets the city without the crush.

04Waar te verblijven

This changes every year, so the general rule matters more than any address. Stay near the week's events rather than near the stadium: the fan experience, the media centre and the host committee's programming are almost always downtown, while the stadium is frequently in a suburb with poor transit and heavy game-day traffic. For Super Bowl LXI at SoFi Stadium, that means the Los Angeles basin - downtown, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Hollywood and the South Bay are all within reach, with Inglewood and El Segundo closest to the ground and Manhattan Beach and Playa del Rey the pleasantest nearby. Los Angeles has very large hotel supply, which softens the squeeze relative to a smaller host city. Wherever the game is, book early and read the minimum-stay terms; cancellation policies tighten for this week.

05Toegang en hospitality

Ticket distribution is the defining fact. The NFL allocates the great majority of tickets to the two competing clubs, the host club and the league's other franchises, leaving a small allocation for a public random drawing that the league runs; entries open well before the season and winners buy at face value. Everything else reaches the public through the secondary market, where prices bear no relation to face value, or through the league's official hospitality operator, which sells packages combining tickets with pre-game events. Beyond the stadium, the week's public layer is genuinely open: the NFL's multi-day fan event sells its own tickets at ordinary prices, Opening Night is a ticketed public event, and much of the host committee's programme is free. No prices are quoted here because none were read from the league.

06Waar de sociale activiteit plaatsvindt

In the host city's public spaces rather than at the stadium. The convention centre and the streets around it carry the fan events; the host committee stages concerts and installations in parks and plazas; broadcasters set up in hotel ballrooms that the public can watch from the lobby. The bars and restaurants of the downtown core run at capacity from Thursday. In Los Angeles for 2027 that will mean downtown around L.A. Live and the convention centre, the beach cities for the visiting crowd, and Hollywood and West Hollywood in the evening. The corporate and brand programme - the parties that get written about - is closed and invitation-only, and nothing about it is publicly purchasable.

07Hoe u er komt

Commerciële luchtvaartVaries by host. For Super Bowl LXI, Los Angeles International is 6 km from SoFi Stadium, effectively adjacent, with Hollywood Burbank, Long Beach, John Wayne and Ontario as the regional alternatives; all are heavily loaded for the week and fares rise sharply. For Super Bowl LX, San Francisco and San Jose served Levi's Stadium.
TreinRarely useful. Most host stadiums sit outside the passenger rail network; Los Angeles Metro's K and C lines serve the SoFi Stadium area with a shuttle connection, and the region's Metrolink commuter network reaches downtown. Amtrak is not a practical way to arrive for the game.
AutoGame-day traffic and parking around any Super Bowl stadium is severe and controlled, with permitted parking only and long queues in both directions. Rideshare drop-off is displaced to designated lots. In Los Angeles the traffic is the defining constraint of the whole week.
PrivéluchtvaartSuper Bowl weekend produces the heaviest concentration of business-aviation movements in the American year, and the host region's airports operate reservation and slot systems with parking allocated in advance and overflow pushed to fields a hundred miles out. For Los Angeles that means Van Nuys, Burbank, Long Beach, Santa Monica, John Wayne and, for overflow, San Bernardino and Palm Springs. Arrangements are made months ahead.
HelikopterCharter helicopter transfers operate in most host regions during Super Bowl week and are heavily used in Los Angeles, which has an unusually developed helicopter market. Airspace around the stadium is restricted on game day by temporary flight restrictions and no helicopter arrivals are permitted at the ground.

08Praktische informatie

DresscodeNone. The stadium is team colours and jerseys, and the corporate seating is smart casual at most. The host city's evening events range from ordinary to black tie depending on which they are; the league's awards show is formal. The practical consideration is the weather, which in a February host city can mean anything from a warm afternoon to a cold night, and open-air stadiums get cold after dark even in California.
WeerThe NFL requires either a warm-weather host market or a covered stadium, so the game is rarely played in genuine cold, but February evenings in the usual host regions are cool. Los Angeles in mid-February typically brings daytime highs around 20C and overnight lows near 10C, with 70 to 90 mm of rain across the month - it is the wettest part of the southern Californian year. SoFi Stadium has a translucent canopy roof over an open-sided bowl, so the game is sheltered from rain but not from temperature.
Verplaatsing ter plaatseEvery host city runs a special transport plan for the week and the details change annually; read the host committee's own guidance rather than assuming. The consistent facts are that stadium parking is permit-only and sells out, rideshare pick-up is moved to remote lots with long waits, and leaving the ground takes between one and two hours. In Los Angeles for 2027, plan the return journey before the game and expect the Metro connection and the shuttle system to be the fastest route out.
HotelsThe most extreme hotel week in the American calendar. Blocks across the host region are taken by the league, broadcasters and corporate buyers a year ahead, rates commonly run at three to five times normal with three- and four-night minimums, and cancellation terms tighten. Los Angeles's very large supply makes 2027 less severe than a smaller host city would be, but downtown and the South Bay will still price up steeply. Book as soon as the date is fixed, and read the terms.
RestaurantsHost-city restaurants run at capacity from Thursday to Sunday and the better ones are booked out by corporate groups weeks ahead. Reserve early or eat outside the core - in Los Angeles, that means the beach cities, the eastside and the San Gabriel Valley, all of which are better eating than downtown in any case. Stadium catering is what it is.
ReserveringstimingHotels as soon as the host city is known, which is years in advance, or at the latest by the preceding autumn. The NFL's public ticket drawing opens well before the season. Official hospitality packages go on sale months ahead. Restaurants three to four weeks. Private aviation parking and handling several months.
TicketsThe NFL distributes the great majority of tickets to the two participating clubs, the host club and the league's other franchises. A small allocation is sold at face value through a random drawing the league runs, with entries taken well before the season and winners notified in advance. The remainder of public access is through the secondary market, at prices set by it, or through the league's official hospitality operator, which packages tickets with events. The multi-day fan experience, Opening Night and much of the host committee's programme are separately and cheaply ticketed and are the accessible part of the week. No prices are stated here because none were read from the league.
HospitalityThe NFL operates an official hospitality arm that sells packages combining game tickets with pre-game hospitality, and it is the only sanctioned route to a ticket outside a club allocation or the public drawing. Corporate hospitality inside the stadium is contracted through the league and its sponsors. Brand and media parties around the game are private and invitation-only; they are widely reported on afterward but are not sold, and offers claiming to provide access should be treated with caution.

09Geschiedenis

The game began as the AFL-NFL World Championship Game, first played in January 1967 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum before a stadium that was not full, and took the Super Bowl name from the third edition. The merger of the two leagues in 1970 made it the championship of a single sport, and the game's television audience grew through the 1970s and 1980s until it became the fixed point of the American year. The halftime show was a marching-band affair until 1993, when the league changed the format and the interval became a headline concert. Roman numerals have been used since Super Bowl V, with one deliberate exception at 50. Two structural changes matter for the calendar: the expansion of the regular season and the playoffs has pushed the game progressively later in the winter, and from Super Bowl LXI it moves to the Sunday before Presidents' Day, giving the United States a long weekend around it for the first time.

10Wie is er

Supporters of the two competing teams, who receive the largest single share of tickets through their clubs and travel in force with only two weeks' notice; the NFL's corporate and sponsor market, which takes a substantial part of the stadium and almost all of the premium seating; league and club personnel across all franchises; the American and international sports media; the entertainment industry, drawn by the halftime show; and, in the host city rather than the stadium, a very large general public attending the fan events. The stadium crowd is more corporate and less partisan than any other championship final in American sport, which is a common complaint about it.
