Sundance is the festival where American independent film sells itself. Around a hundred features screen over eleven days in late January, split between U.S. and World Cinema competitions for drama and documentary, the Premieres strand, the more experimental NEXT section, and a program of shorts and episodic work. Grand Jury Prizes and Audience Awards are decided in each competition category, and the Audience Awards in particular have a habit of predicting which films will actually find distribution. For four decades this happened in a small ski town at 2,100 meters, with buyers negotiating in condominium living rooms while the film was still screening.
The festival is now moving. On March 27, 2025 the Sundance Institute announced a ten-year agreement to relocate to Boulder, Colorado; the 2026 edition, January 22 to February 1, was the last held in Utah. On February 24, 2026 the Institute confirmed the first Boulder edition for January 21 to 31, 2027 and published its venue list: the Boulder Theater, the Chautauqua Auditorium, Macky Auditorium and two other halls on the University of Colorado campus, both theaters at the Dairy Arts Center, Cinemark Century Boulder, eTown Hall, and two school auditoriums, with talks at the public library's Canyon Theater and at Old Main. The Institute's headquarters and its screenwriting and directing labs remain in Utah.
What this changes for a visitor is substantial. Park City's festival ran up and down one street, Main Street, with shuttle buses to outlying theaters and a permanent shortage of beds; Boulder is a university town on the plains at the foot of the Flatirons, with a compact pedestrian center on Pearl Street, a campus that supplies large auditoriums, and Denver's airport an hour away. The programming logic is unchanged and the crowd will be recognizably the same. The geography, the altitude and the price of a room will not be.
01Warum es relevant ist
Sundance is the year's first market for American films that do not yet have distributors, and the deals struck in its opening seventy-two hours set the shape of the specialty release calendar. A run of documentaries and first features have gone from a Sundance premiere to Academy recognition within thirteen months, and for a director without a studio behind them it remains the single most consequential week available.
In our reading the move to Boulder is the most interesting structural change in the festival calendar this decade. Park City's constraints - a two-lane canyon road, a room supply calibrated to skiers, and a Main Street that had been substantially colonized by brand activations - had come to define the experience more than the films did. Whether Boulder produces a better festival is an open question, but it will produce a different one, and the first edition will be watched closely by every festival with a housing problem.
02Die Woche darum
In Park City the festival took over the whole town: Main Street closed to through traffic at its busiest, storefronts were leased for the fortnight as brand houses and media studios, the free shuttle network ran to capacity, and residents left or rented out their houses. Salt Lake City hosted a share of screenings and served as the overflow accommodation, forty minutes down the canyon when the road was clear and much longer when it snowed.
Boulder's version is not yet known. What the Institute has published implies a similar shape on a different plan: a dense cluster of theaters within walking distance of the Pearl Street Mall and a second cluster on the university campus fifteen minutes south, with talks and public programming in civic buildings. The town has roughly 100,000 residents and a student population on top of that, and its restaurants and hotels are concentrated in the same small downtown grid that the festival will use. Denver, forty-five minutes southeast, is the obvious overflow and the obvious source of day visitors.
03Anreisezeitpunkt
The first weekend is the festival. Premieres, the buyers and the press are all front-loaded into the opening Thursday through Monday, and the acquisitions that matter are usually done by the following Wednesday. Anyone attending for business should arrive on the Wednesday before opening. Anyone attending to watch films is better served by the second half: tickets are easier, the theaters are calmer, and the award winners screen again at the end. Winter weather is a real scheduling risk at both locations, and building a spare half-day into the arrival is sensible.
04Unterkunft
For the 2027 edition and after, downtown Boulder around the Pearl Street Mall puts a visitor within walking distance of the Boulder Theater, the Dairy Arts Center and eTown Hall, with the campus venues a short bus ride south; it is also where the restaurants are. The hotel stock downtown is modest for a festival of this size, and the practical alternatives are the properties along 28th Street and Baseline Road, the Chautauqua cottages beneath the Flatirons for those booking very early, and Denver or the northern suburbs with a drive in. In Park City the equivalent logic was Old Town for walking distance and the Canyons or Salt Lake City for availability. Hotels are named here only as landmarks; the operative point in either town is that supply is short and the festival fills it.
05Zugang und Hospitality
Sundance is a public ticketed festival. The Institute sells passes and ticket packages ahead of single tickets, with earlier access for Sundance Institute members and donor circles, and releases individual tickets closer to the festival; an online waitlist system has in recent years replaced physical rush lines for unsold seats. Press and industry accreditation is applied for separately and admits holders to a parallel screening schedule. Prices and the exact on-sale sequence are published each autumn and were not available for the 2027 edition at the time of writing. Talks and panels are generally sold as individual tickets or streamed, and a portion of the program has been made available online in recent years. The organizer does not sell hospitality packages.
06Wo das gesellschaftliche Geschehen stattfindet
Park City's public geography was a single street: Main Street from the Egyptian Theatre down to the Wasatch Brew Pub, walked several times a day, with the sidewalks taken by queues and the storefronts by temporary brand houses that admitted the public on some days and not others. Boulder's equivalent will almost certainly be the Pearl Street Mall, the pedestrianized four blocks that already hold most of the town's bars, restaurants and street performers, with the Dairy Arts Center a block north and the Boulder Theater on 14th Street. The university's Hill neighborhood and the restaurants along Walnut and Spruce absorb the rest. None of this requires a ticket to walk through.

09Geschichte
The festival began in Salt Lake City in August 1978 as the Utah/US Film Festival, created by the Utah Film Commission with Robert Redford, Sterling Van Wagenen and John Earle, and intended partly to attract filmmaking to the state. It moved to Park City in 1981 and shifted to January on the theory that people would rather watch films in a ski town in winter. The Sundance Institute, which Redford had founded in 1981 and named after his character in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, took over management in the mid-1980s, and the event acquired its present name in 1991. The 1990s made its reputation: a sequence of debut features bought on Main Street changed what an independent film could earn, and the festival became the entry point for a generation of American directors. Its final Utah edition was held in 2026.
10Wer ist dort
Independent directors, producers and their sales representatives; acquisitions executives from specialty distributors and streaming services, concentrated in the opening days; documentary funders and foundations, a larger constituency here than at any comparable festival; press and critics; festival programmers building the year's circuit; and a substantial public audience, historically drawn from Utah and now expected from Colorado's Front Range.
