Allen & Company Sun Valley Conference

Expected · Sun Valley Resort

A closed July gathering in Idaho, hosted by the investment bank Allen & Company since 1983, with no programme, no tickets and no press inside.

An event page tells you when it happens (with how sure we are of the date), why it matters, how the week around it feels, when to arrive and leave, where people stay, how access works, and which events come before and after it on the circuit.

Dates ExpectedNo dates are announced in advance and none will be. The conference has run in the first or second full week of July every year since 1983, beginning on a Tuesday; the estimate places 2027 on 6-10 July on that pattern. Treat as provisional until arrivals are reported.

For five days each July the private investment bank Allen & Company takes over the Sun Valley Resort in central Idaho and hosts an invitation-only conference for media, technology, finance and political figures. The firm has run it since 1983, pays for it, issues no public programme and sells nothing: no registration, no sponsorship, no press accreditation.

What is publicly established comes from the reporters who work the resort perimeter. Bloomberg, Reuters, CNBC, Fortune and Forbes have covered arrivals annually for two decades, describing morning presentations, afternoons left open for hiking, rafting and golf, and evening dinners; guests bring families.

01Why it matters

It is the least visible and most concentrated gathering on this calendar: a few hundred people from American media, technology and finance, five days in a resort valley with no stage, no livestream and no record.

02The week around it

Ketchum and Sun Valley, adjoining towns of a few thousand, absorb the conference without closing. The resort is unavailable and the airfield at Hailey handles a sharp spike in traffic, but the trails, the river and Ketchum's Main Street carry on as a normal Idaho summer.

03When to arrive

Not applicable: the conference cannot be attended.

04Where to stay

The Sun Valley Lodge and Inn are the conference's own accommodation for the week. Visitors otherwise stay in Ketchum, walkable to Main Street, or in Hailey and Bellevue further south, cheaper and closer to the airport.

05Access and hospitality

There is no access. Attendance is by written invitation from Allen & Company, which hosts and pays for the whole conference; there are no passes, sponsors, observer places or press credentials. Journalists cover it from outside the resort, and nothing is published afterwards.

06Where the social activity happens

Everything happens inside the resort. The only publicly visible social geography is Ketchum's Main Street restaurants and the trailheads and river accesses of the Wood River Valley, open to anyone.

07Getting there

Commercial aviationFriedman Memorial at Hailey, 20 km south, has limited scheduled service; Boise is two and a half hours by road.
RailNone. There is no passenger rail to the Wood River Valley.
CarIdaho State Highway 75 runs the valley from Interstate 84 at Twin Falls, about two hours away.
Private aviationHailey is where conference traffic concentrates; its single runway and mountain approach limit aircraft size and it closes readily in weather.
HelicopterNot a normal means of arrival; road transfer from Hailey takes about twenty-five minutes.

08Practicalities

DressReporting from the perimeter describes outdoor clothing rather than business dress: fleece, shells and boots, nothing more formal in the evening.
WeatherEarly July in the Wood River Valley is dry and mountainous in character: warm afternoons, cool nights at around 1,750 metres, long daylight.
Getting aroundOne road and one small airport, both at capacity. Ground transfers from Hailey and Boise are pre-booked far ahead in early July.
HotelsThe resort is closed to outside guests for the week; Ketchum and Hailey fill early in what is already the valley's high season.
RestaurantsKetchum's restaurants stay open and busy; tables are harder to hold than in an ordinary July week.
Reservation timingValley accommodation for early July should be held several months ahead; the conference tightens an already full week.
TicketsNone exists. The conference is not ticketed, sold or opened to observers in any form.
HospitalityNone is offered. Allen & Company funds the conference and does not accept sponsorship or sell hospitality.

09History

Allen & Company was founded in New York in 1922 and built its practice around media and entertainment. Herbert Allen Jr. convened the first Sun Valley conference in 1983 for the industry the bank served.

10Who is there

Media and entertainment principals, technology founders and chief executives, investment bankers and institutional investors, sports-league and telecommunications executives, and a smaller number of political and philanthropic figures, attending with family.
