SOBEWFF is the largest food festival in the United States that is also, structurally, a university fundraiser. It belongs to Florida International University's Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management, which receives the proceeds; more than 1,400 FIU students work some 3,500 shifts across the four days, and the school reports that the festival has generated over $46 million for it. Lee Brian Schrager has founded and directed it in its present form since 2002.

There is no single site. The festival is a hundred-odd separately ticketed events spread across Miami Beach and the mainland over four days: late-night walk-around tastings, chef competitions, wine seminars, brunches, small dinners in restaurants. The anchor is Goya Foods' Grand Tasting Village, white tents pitched over three city blocks of sand beside Ocean Drive for the closing Saturday and Sunday. The marquee competitions have their own venues and their own television personalities, and the Fontainebleau in Mid-Beach takes Wine Spectator's Best of the Best.

The Food Network title and the Capital One presenting sponsorship set the register. Around 500 chefs and food-media figures appear on the programme, many of them known from television rather than from restaurant guides, and the festival is unembarrassed about that — it is a popular event that raises money, not a critics' gathering.

01Por qué es relevante

February in Miami is the densest month in the American social calendar, and SOBEWFF is the part of it that anyone can buy into: tickets go on general sale, event by event, and a single evening is a realistic purchase. Its significance is commercial and civic rather than gastronomic. For drinks and food brands it is the year's largest consumer-facing activation window in the United States; for Miami Beach it is a four-day occupancy guarantee in the middle of high season; for FIU it is the endowment engine behind a hospitality school. In our reading the festival's real achievement is the funding model — very few food festivals anywhere can show a nine-figure cumulative transfer to an educational institution, and the student labour that runs it doubles as the school's practical training.

02La semana en torno al evento

The festival lands in the middle of Miami Beach's high season, already busy with art and design traffic, the boat show a week earlier and spring-break pressure building. Ocean Drive loses its beach frontage at Lummus Park to the Grand Tasting tents from midweek, and the sidewalk cafés along it run at capacity. Restaurants across South Beach, Mid-Beach, Brickell and the Design District host festival dinners, which removes a great deal of ordinary booking supply for four nights. Traffic across the causeways is the practical constraint, and it is worst on the Friday and Saturday evenings.

03Cuándo llegar

Arrive Wednesday or Thursday. The programme's strongest competitions run Thursday and Friday evening and the Grand Tasting Village occupies Saturday and Sunday afternoon, so a Thursday-to-Monday stay covers the shape of it without requiring stamina. Sunday afternoon in the tents is the more relaxed of the two Grand Tasting days.

04Dónde alojarse

South Beach below Lincoln Road puts the Grand Tasting Village and most of the late-night tastings within walking distance, with the Loews Miami Beach and the Delano as the landmarks people navigate by. Mid-Beach, around the Fontainebleau and the Faena district, is quieter and serves the Best of the Best end of the programme. The mainland — Brickell, Downtown, the Design District — is cheaper and increasingly where festival dinners happen, at the cost of a causeway crossing each way. Surfside and Bal Harbour are the calm option for anyone treating the festival as an evening activity rather than a weekend.

05Acceso y hospitalidad

Everything is sold as an individual ticket rather than a pass, which is unusual at this scale and is the main reason the festival reads as public. The organizer publishes a price for each event on its own site across a wide range, from walk-around tastings to small dinners; no figure is quoted here because the ticketing pages could not be retrieved. Tickets go on sale some weeks before the festival and the named competitions sell out first. Brands participate as sponsors and as pourers inside the Grand Tasting Village. Trade and press access is handled separately by the organizer. Volunteer and student positions are filled through FIU.

06Dónde tiene lugar la actividad social

The Grand Tasting tents and the boardwalk beside them are the daytime center. In the evening it spreads to the hotel bars and pool decks along Collins Avenue, the restaurants of South of Fifth, the Design District's courtyards, and the late-night walk-around events, which are the festival's most sociable format and the ones that run past midnight. Ocean Drive itself absorbs the overflow, as it does every February.

07Cómo llegar

Aviación comercialMiami International (MIA) is about 25 to 40 minutes from South Beach depending on traffic and is served from most of the Americas and Europe. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood (FLL) is a similar distance north and often cheaper.
FerroviarioBrightline connects Miami Central downtown to Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and Orlando, which makes a day trip from Palm Beach realistic; Tri-Rail serves the commuter corridor. Neither reaches Miami Beach — the last leg is road.
AutomóvilThree causeways link the mainland to Miami Beach and all three back up in the evenings of festival weekend. Parking in South Beach is scarce and expensive; most attendees use rideshare, and the surge pricing around the Grand Tasting Village's close is predictable.
Aviación privadaMiami-Opa Locka Executive (OPF) is the principal business-aviation field for Miami Beach, with Miami Executive (TMB) and Fort Lauderdale Executive (FXE) also in use. February is the peak of the South Florida business-aviation season and slots are contested.
MarinasMiami Beach Marina at South of Fifth is the nearest large basin to the festival footprint, with Island Gardens on Watson Island handling larger yachts. February is the height of the South Florida charter season.

08Aspectos prácticos

VestimentaMiami resort dressing, and warmer than visitors expect after dark. The Grand Tasting Village is on sand, so flat shoes are the sensible choice; the evening competitions and dinners run from smart casual to cocktail, with the Best of the Best at the Fontainebleau the dressiest thing on the programme.
ClimaLate February in Miami Beach is the most comfortable part of the year: dry-season conditions, daytime highs in the mid-twenties Celsius, nights in the high teens, low humidity by local standards and a small chance of rain. Evenings on the sand can feel cool in a breeze. No meteorological normals were retrieved for this record.
Cómo desplazarseWalking is the right answer within South Beach, and rideshare for everything else. Miami Beach's free trolley loops cover Collins and Washington Avenues. Allow an hour either way for a mainland dinner on the Friday or Saturday. The Grand Tasting Village has no parking of its own and the surrounding streets are restricted during the build.
HotelesFebruary is peak season in Miami Beach before the festival is taken into account, and the festival overlaps spring-break build-up and the tail of the boat-show and art-market traffic. Rates are at their annual high and South Beach supply tightens four to six weeks out.
RestaurantesA large share of South Beach and Design District restaurants are hosting festival events across the four nights, which takes them out of normal booking. Anything not on the programme fills with festival-goers anyway. Book before the programme is published if you want a specific table, or eat at the festival.
Momento de la reservaHotels two to three months ahead for South Beach in February. Festival tickets as soon as they go on sale, particularly for the named competitions. Restaurant tables three to four weeks, earlier for South of Fifth.
EntradasThere is no festival pass. Every event is ticketed individually through the organizer's site, at prices the organizer publishes per event; we did not retrieve the ticketing pages and quote no figures. The Grand Tasting Village sells general-admission and earlier-entry tickets for each of its two days, and the competitions and dinners are sold separately and in smaller numbers. Proceeds go to FIU's Chaplin School.
HospitalidadCommercial participation is as a sponsor or as a pouring brand inside the Grand Tasting Village, arranged with the organizer. There is no hospitality-suite programme in the sporting sense; hotels and restaurants on the programme handle their own guests. FIU runs the student staffing and the volunteer programme, which is the only non-paying route in.

09Historia

The event began in 1994 as a modest one-day wine gathering tied to FIU. In 2002 Lee Brian Schrager, then running special events for Southern Wine & Spirits, took it over, moved it to South Beach and rebuilt it as a multi-day destination festival; the annual numbering runs from that year, which is why 2026 was the 25th annual rather than the thirty-second. Television partnership shaped the next two decades, with Food Network and later the Cooking Channel supplying both the title and much of the on-stage talent. There was no festival in 2021. The format has since widened geographically, with events in the Design District and Historic Overtown rather than only on Ocean Drive.

10Quién está ahí

Consumers in large numbers, which distinguishes SOBEWFF from most events in this calendar; wine, spirits and food brands with consumer-marketing budgets; restaurant operators and chefs, some on the programme and many attending; food media and television production; FIU students, faculty and alumni; and the festival's donor and sponsor base.
