Sommets Musicaux is the winter counterweight to Gstaad's long summer festival: nine days at the turn of January and February, played in the small stone churches and chapels of the Saanenland rather than in a tent or a hall. The scale is deliberate. Audiences are measured in a few hundred, the repertoire runs to chamber music, recital and voice, and the acoustics of a valley church at 1,000 metres in winter do the rest.

Renaud Capucon has been artistic director since 2016, and the festival's structure reflects a performer's priorities: a composer in residence each year - Yves Chauris in 2026 - and two prizes awarded to young musicians, the Prix Thierry Scherz and the Prix Andre Hoffmann, the first of which funds a debut recording. Established soloists and emerging ones are programmed against each other across the same nine days, and the closing concert is traditionally at the Eglise de Saanen.

Because it falls at the top of the ski season, the festival is experienced by most of its audience as an evening addition to a mountain day rather than as the reason for the trip. That is precisely how it is designed.

01Waarom het relevant is

The Saanenland now has two festivals and they do different jobs. The Menuhin Festival fills seven summer weeks and needs a tent to hold its audiences; Sommets Musicaux fills nine winter days and refuses to grow. In our reading the winter festival is the more interesting of the two as a programming proposition - it is small enough to take risks, its residency and prize structure genuinely launches careers, and it puts new music in front of an audience that came for the skiing. It also solves a real problem for the visitor: Gstaad's evenings in high season are otherwise a matter of hotel dining rooms, and this is the one thing in the valley you can buy a ticket to.

02De week eromheen

The last days of January and first of February are the top of the Saanenland's winter. The Gstaad Mountain Rides ski area is at full strength across Eggli, Wispile, Saanerslochgrat, Rinderberg and the Glacier 3000, the promenade is busy from mid-afternoon, and the valley's hotels are at their annual peak occupancy just before the Swiss half-term holidays add another wave. The festival sits inside that without competing with it: concerts are in the late afternoon and evening, the venues are ten minutes apart by car or train, and audiences come off the mountain and change. What is public in the valley that week is the whole of it - the promenade, the Saanen and Gstaad markets, the sledging runs, the winter walking paths along the Saane and the free village buses. Concerts in the churches are ticketed and small; almost everything else about the week is not.

03Wanneer aan te komen

Come for a Thursday-to-Sunday or a Friday-to-Sunday and take two or three concerts. The opening weekend and the closing Saturday carry the largest events. Because the venues are small, decide on concerts before booking anything else - the rooms are easier to find than the seats.

04Waar te verblijven

Gstaad village along the promenade is the natural base and puts you within a short drive or train ride of every venue; the Gstaad Palace and the Alpina are the landmarks above it. Saanen, five minutes down the valley, is beside the church that hosts the closing concert and is quieter and cheaper. Schonried, Saanenmoser and Gsteig are the mountain villages, all on the MOB railway. Rougemont, over the border into the Vaud, is ten minutes away and has its own church. Staying anywhere on the railway line works, which matters because the festival deliberately moves between villages.

05Toegang en hospitality

Tickets are sold by the festival, concert by concert. Venue capacities are small - these are village churches and a chapel, not concert halls - so the constraint is seats rather than price, and the best-known soloists sell out first. The festival's supporters' association, Les Amis des Sommets Musicaux, funds the prizes and the residency. No commercial hospitality tier is published.

06Waar de sociale activiteit plaatsvindt

The interval and post-concert crowd outside the churches, which in February means standing in the snow for five minutes and then moving on; the Gstaad promenade and its terraces; the bar and Grand Hall of the Gstaad Palace and the hotel bars along the valley. During the day, the mountain restaurants on Eggli and Wispile and the sun terraces at Saanerslochgrat. The festival audience and the ski audience are largely the same people at different hours.

07Hoe u er komt

Commerciële luchtvaartGeneva is about two and a quarter hours by road and the standard arrival; Bern-Belp is an hour and a quarter; Zurich around three hours.
TreinThe Montreux Oberland Bernois line from Montreux through Rougemont to Gstaad and Saanen, or the GoldenPass route from Interlaken via Zweisimmen. Both stations are close to festival venues and the MOB is the practical way to move between concerts in different villages on a winter evening.
AutoFrom Geneva via Aigle and the Col des Mosses, or from Bern via Spiez and Zweisimmen. Winter tires are required and the Mosses can be slow after snowfall. Village parking is underground and limited in high season.
PrivéluchtvaartGstaad Airport at Saanen handles business aviation for the region in winter, with Bern-Belp and Sion as alternatives and Geneva for larger aircraft.
HelikopterHelicopter transfer from Geneva and Bern into Saanen operates through Swiss operators and is common in the high-season weeks.

08Praktische informatie

DresscodeSmart winter clothing rather than concert dress. Village churches in February are cold and unheated in places, so layers under a coat matter more than anything else; audiences come off the mountain and change into something warm and presentable. Proper boots for the walk from the car park to the church door.
WeerLate January and early February in the Saanenland give daytime highs around minus 2 to plus 2C at village level and overnight lows near minus 8 to minus 12C, with the valley's best snow cover of the season. Evening travel between villages can be slow after fresh snow.
Verplaatsing ter plaatseThe MOB railway and Postbus network link every venue and run late enough for evening concerts; most hotels issue a guest card covering local transport. Driving between villages after a concert in fresh snow is the slower option.
HotelsThis is the peak of the Gstaad winter and the valley is close to full, with the Swiss half-term holidays arriving immediately afterward. Village hotels take repeat bookings from one winter to the next; six months' notice is not excessive for the promenade, and the outlying villages hold longer. Minimum stays are common.
RestaurantsGstaad and Saanen restaurants are booked out in high season and concert evenings compress the dinner service into a narrow window; reserve for after the concert rather than before. Mountain restaurants need reservations at lunch. The valley's Berner and Saanenland cooking is better found in Gsteig and Lauenen than on the promenade.
ReserveringstimingThe programme is published in the autumn and the small venue capacities mean tickets go quickly, particularly for the closing concert at Saanen. Book concerts first, then hotels; the promenade hotels for the turn of January and February should be held several months ahead.
TicketsSold by the festival, concert by concert, through its own site. Capacities are small because the venues are churches and chapels. No prices are stated here; the organizer publishes them with each season's programme.
HospitalityNo commercial hospitality product is published. Les Amis des Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad is the festival's supporters' association and funds the residency and the two prizes - the Prix Thierry Scherz, which supports a young soloist's first recording, and the Prix Andre Hoffmann for contemporary interpretation.

09Geschiedenis

The festival was created at the start of the 2000s to give Gstaad a winter musical programme distinct from the summer Menuhin Festival, using the valley's churches rather than building a venue. It has kept that form. Renaud Capucon took the artistic direction in 2016, since when the residency and prize structure has become the festival's identifying feature: the Prix Thierry Scherz supports a first recording with orchestra, and the Prix Andre Hoffmann recognizes the interpretation of contemporary work. The 2026 edition was the twenty-sixth.

10Wie is er

Gstaad's winter residents and chalet owners, Swiss and French classical audiences from Geneva, Lausanne and Bern, hotel guests already in the valley for the skiing, the artists' own following, and a small international contingent that comes specifically for the residency and prize concerts. Older and quieter than the summer festival's audience and much smaller.
