Cartier Polo World Cup on Snow, Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz

Every January a polo field is built on top of a frozen lake. Snow is compacted and graded across the ice of Lake St. Moritz, boards and grandstands are set out, tents and a village of sponsor pavilions go up, and six teams play three days of high-goal polo with a red ball, studded shoes and reins in gloved hands. The organizers put the weight of the temporary structure at around 2,400 tonnes in 2026 - a figure worth holding in mind, because the whole thing sits on ice that will be water again by April.

The polo is genuine. Team handicaps run between 15 and 22 goals, the professionals are drawn from the Argentine and European circuits, and the snow game rewards different qualities from the grass version: shorter fields, faster stops, a heavier ball that skids rather than rolls, and horses shod for grip. Six teams play a group stage on Friday and Saturday, with the World Cup final, the Casablanca Cup and the Mackage Trophy decided on Sunday afternoon in front of a full grandstand.

What makes it more than a sporting weekend is the geography. The field is a ten-minute walk downhill from the middle of St. Moritz Dorf, in full view of the hotels along the ridge, at the point in the winter when the Engadin is at its busiest. The organizers reported 26,000 spectators across the 2026 edition. Practice matches on the Thursday are free to watch from the grandstand, and children and teenagers under sixteen are admitted free across the weekend, which makes this one of the more genuinely public fixtures on the winter calendar.

01중요한 이유

Snow polo began here. Reto Gaudenzi staged the first tournament on the lake in 1985, the first formal adaptation of polo to snow and ice, and every snow polo event since - in Kitzbuhel, Aspen, Tianjin, Cortina - descends from it. Forty-one editions later St. Moritz remains the only high-goal tournament on snow, which gives it a monopoly no other winter sporting fixture enjoys. In our reading, its real significance in the calendar is structural rather than sporting: it is the weekend that concentrates the Engadin's winter season into one place at one time. The hotels along the Dorf ridge are full, the brand programme around the lake is at its annual peak, and a visitor who wants to see how the Alps work socially in January will see more of it in three days here than in a fortnight anywhere else.

02전후 일주일

This is the peak of the Engadin winter and the resort behaves accordingly. St. Moritz has three overlapping populations that weekend: the ski season at full strength on Corviglia and Corvatsch, the polo crowd, and the run of events that bracket the tournament - White Turf's three Sundays in February and the Engadin Skimarathon in March. The lakeside is the visible center. From the Thursday, the grandstands and the tented village are up, the Via Serlas shops run their winter windows, and the terraces at Badrutt's Palace, Kulm and Suvretta House are the places the weekend actually happens in public view. The organizers describe a programme of social events on the lake and in the hotels; most of that is invitation-based, but a great deal of the atmosphere is not. Walking down to the lake, standing at the boards, watching the Thursday practice for nothing and taking the funicular up Corviglia in the morning before the first chukka is a completely normal way to spend the weekend. Traffic through the village tightens badly on the Sunday, and the walk is faster than the car.

03도착 시기

Arrive Wednesday or Thursday. The Thursday practice matches are free and half-empty, the light on the lake in the morning is the best of the weekend, and you get a day of skiing before the crowd arrives. Friday and Saturday are group play; Sunday carries the three finals and the prize giving, after which the resort empties quickly. Leaving Monday morning rather than Sunday evening avoids the worst of the traffic down the Julier and the queues at Samedan.

04숙박 장소

St. Moritz Dorf, the upper village along Via Serlas, is the shortest walk to the lake and the center of the weekend; Badrutt's Palace, Kulm Hotel and Carlton are the landmarks on that ridge. St. Moritz Bad, down by the lake itself, is closer to the field, cheaper and quieter, with the Suvretta House sitting apart above it on its own approach. For a calmer stay with the same skiing, Champfer, Silvaplana and Sils Maria are five to fifteen minutes down the valley and much easier on the wallet and the nerves; Pontresina, in the Bernina valley, is the other alternative and has its own character. The trade-off is straightforward: the ridge puts you in the middle of everything and charges for it, the valley villages give you the mountains and a taxi ride.

05접근성 및 환대 행사

The organizers publish four paid categories plus a free one. General admission covers the public area, the exhibitor tents and the entertainment, with food and drink bought a la carte. The Perrier-Jouet Chukker Club gives grandstand seating with champagne, canapes and a blanket. VIP tickets include the VIP tent with food and beverage, a seated lunch, the VIP grandstand and a cigar lounge. Gala tickets cover the cocktail reception, dinner and after-party but not the polo. Thursday practice games are free, and under-sixteens are admitted free across the tournament. That structure is unusually legible for an event of this kind and it means a family can watch three days of high-goal polo for very little.

06사교 활동 장소

The lake is the daytime center: the public area behind the boards, the exhibitor village, the Chukker Club grandstand and the terraces of the tents. In the evening it moves uphill to the hotel bars along Via Serlas - the Renaissance Bar and Le Grand Hall at Badrutt's Palace, the Sunny Bar and the Kulm Country Club, the Carlton lobby - and to Dracula Club, which is members-and-guests but visible in the weekend's rhythm. Restaurants on the mountain, Chesa Veglia in the village and the huts above Corviglia carry the lunchtime crowd on the days people ski. Nothing about the after-dark side is public in the way the polo is, and the honest advice is that the lake, not the bars, is where the weekend can actually be experienced by anyone who turns up.

07찾아가는 방법

상업 항공Zurich is the main gateway, about three and a half hours by road or four by train. Milan Malpensa and Bergamo are roughly four hours by road over the Maloja pass, weather permitting. Innsbruck and Munich are longer alternatives.
철도The Rhaetian Railway from Chur to St. Moritz, and the Bernina line from Tirano, both arrive in the village centre. Zurich to St. Moritz takes about three and a quarter hours with one change at Chur. Rail is the reliable option in a snow week and puts you a ten-minute walk from the lake.
자동차The Julier pass from Chur is the standard approach and is kept open; the Maloja from Italy is the southern route. Winter tires are required and chains are sensible. The alternative is loading the car onto the Vereina car train through the tunnel from Klosters. Parking in the village during the tournament is difficult and the village is walkable.
프라이빗 항공Samedan (Engadin Airport, SMV) is six kilometres away at 1,707 metres and is the highest airport in Europe with scheduled handling; it is subject to performance limits, daylight restrictions and heavy demand in tournament week. Zurich, Milan Linate and Innsbruck are the fallbacks.
헬리콥터Helicopter transfers into Samedan and to the Engadin heliports operate through Swiss operators and are common in peak weeks; conditions in the valley can ground them at short notice.

08실용 정보

복장Warm and serious, not fashionable. The field is on a frozen lake at 1,800 metres in January and the wind runs down it; proper boots with grip, a long coat, gloves and a hat matter more than anything else. In the tents people dress as they would for a St. Moritz evening, which means well but not formally. Sunglasses are not optional - the glare off the lake is severe. The hotel bars in the evening lean toward jackets for men.
날씨Late January in the Upper Engadin runs cold and bright. Daytime highs around minus 2 to plus 2C, overnight lows commonly minus 12 to minus 18C, with the valley floor colder than the slopes because of inversion. Snowfall in the week is possible but the Engadin is a dry, high valley with a high proportion of clear days. Standing still on the ice for three hours is colder than the numbers suggest.
이동 안내The village is compact and the lake is a walk from almost everywhere in Dorf and Bad. Local buses run through the valley and are included with most hotel guest cards. Driving to the tournament is the slowest way to reach it. Arriving by train and not renting a car at all is entirely workable for this weekend.
호텔Late January is high season across the Engadin and the tournament sits inside it. The Dorf hotels take bookings for the following January from the spring and are effectively full by autumn for that weekend; the valley villages hold longer. Minimum-stay requirements of four to seven nights are common in the peak weeks. If the plan is the polo plus skiing, book by early summer.
레스토랑Village restaurants and the mountain huts above Corviglia and Corvatsch need reservations through the weekend, and Sunday lunch on the mountain is the hardest table. On the lake, food is either the exhibitor stands and a la carte outlets in the public area or the seated catering inside the VIP tent. The Engadin's own cooking - Pizzoccheri, capuns, nusstorte - is worth seeking out in the valley villages rather than in the resort centre.
예약 시기VIP and Chukker Club places are sold from the autumn and the better tables go first. Hotels on the Dorf ridge for the last weekend of January should be held six to nine months ahead; general admission tickets remain available much later. Mountain restaurant tables for the Saturday and Sunday are worth booking as soon as the trip is fixed.
티켓Sold by the organizers through their own ticketing platform in four paid tiers - General Admission, Perrier-Jouet Chukker Club, VIP and Gala - with Thursday practice games free and free entry for under-sixteens throughout. General admission covers the public area, exhibitor tents and entertainment; the Gala ticket covers the dinner and after-party only and does not include the polo. Prices are published on the organizer's tickets page and are not reproduced here.
환대 행사The VIP tent is the organizer's own hospitality product: seated gourmet lunch, wines and Perrier-Jouet champagne, a cigar lounge and reserved grandstand seats with blankets and a champagne bar. Team sponsors and the resort hotels run their own programmes around the tournament, and the organizers refer to social events on the lake and in the village hotels; those are not published as open to the public and should not be assumed purchasable.

09역사

St. Moritz has a long habit of putting sport on its lake. Horse racing on the ice began in 1907 and continues as White Turf; the Cresta Run and the bobsleigh track predate that. Polo arrived in 1985, when Reto Gaudenzi, a hotelier and player, tested whether the game could be adapted to a snow surface. The early tournaments were small, four teams and a handful of tents. The event grew through the 1990s and 2000s into a three-day production with a corporate structure, international team sponsorship - the sides now carry the names of watchmakers, banks, outerwear labels and, in recent years, national tourism boards - and infrastructure that takes weeks to build and days to remove. The 40th anniversary was marked in 2025. The essential format, six teams and three days, has held.

10참석자

Team patrons and sponsors, the professional polo community that moves from Argentina to Europe through the winter, the watch, champagne, outerwear and private-banking brands that fund the teams, hotel guests already in St. Moritz for the ski season, Swiss, German and Italian day visitors from the wider region, and a large family crowd drawn by free entry for under-sixteens. Broader and less specialist than the summer grass tournaments.
