Nine weeks of racing at the oldest sporting venue in the United States, and the reason upstate New York fills every August.
Saratoga is not a race day but a season. The New York Racing Association runs a meet of forty-odd afternoons from July through Labor Day at a track that opened in 1863 and looks it: wooden grandstand, red-and-white awnings, an infield gazebo, and a backyard of picnic tables where the horses pass a few feet away.
Twenty Grade One races were scheduled across the 2026 meet, headed by the Whitney and the Travers. The track's other name is the graveyard of champions: Man o' War's only defeat came here.
01Pourquoi c'est important
Saratoga is the best sustained racing in North America and the only place where a visitor can watch championship-quality thoroughbreds every afternoon for two months. In our reading what distinguishes it is duration: the town, not the racecourse, is the thing you are visiting.
02La semaine environnante
Saratoga Springs runs on the meet: Broadway is full from July to September, the Performing Arts Center stages its residencies in the same weeks, and the Fasig-Tipton sale brings the bloodstock trade in around the Travers.
03Quand arriver
The anchor weekends are Whitney at the start of August and Travers at the end; outside those, any Wednesday-to-Sunday stretch gives good racing with a fraction of the crowd.
04Où séjourner
Downtown Saratoga Springs, on or just off Broadway, is the obvious base — walkable, ten minutes from the track, with the Adelphi and the Gideon Putnam as the period landmarks.
05Accès et hospitalité
NYRA sells general admission at a low price, reserved seats, box seats and premium products including the 1863 Club; picnic tables in the backyard are free with admission on a first-come basis, and morning training is open without a ticket.
06Où se déroule l'activité sociale
The paddock walking ring under the trees, the best in America for watching horses at close range; the backyard picnic grounds; and, in town, Broadway's restaurants.

08Informations pratiques
09Historique
John Morrissey staged a four-day meet on the Oklahoma Track in 1863, then bought 125 acres across Union Avenue and opened the present course the following year. The Travers began in 1864, the oldest major thoroughbred race in the United States.
10Qui s'y trouve
American owners, breeders, trainers and the bloodstock trade, many of whom take houses for the meet; New York families who have summered here for generations; and a very large regional public.

The meet included 20 Grade One races among 73 stakes worth more than $23.5 million, with the 157th Travers on Saturday 29 August. Verified on 6 September 2026, when the meet had one day left to run. |
