Saratoga is not a race day but a season. The New York Racing Association runs a meet of forty-odd afternoons from July through Labor Day at a track that opened in 1863 and looks it: wooden grandstand, red-and-white awnings, an infield gazebo, and a backyard of picnic tables where the horses pass a few feet away.

Twenty Grade One races were scheduled across the 2026 meet, headed by the Whitney and the Travers. The track's other name is the graveyard of champions: Man o' War's only defeat came here.

01Why it matters

Saratoga is the best sustained racing in North America and the only place where a visitor can watch championship-quality thoroughbreds every afternoon for two months. In our reading what distinguishes it is duration: the town, not the racecourse, is the thing you are visiting.

02The week around it

Saratoga Springs runs on the meet: Broadway is full from July to September, the Performing Arts Center stages its residencies in the same weeks, and the Fasig-Tipton sale brings the bloodstock trade in around the Travers.

03When to arrive

The anchor weekends are Whitney at the start of August and Travers at the end; outside those, any Wednesday-to-Sunday stretch gives good racing with a fraction of the crowd.

04Where to stay

Downtown Saratoga Springs, on or just off Broadway, is the obvious base — walkable, ten minutes from the track, with the Adelphi and the Gideon Putnam as the period landmarks.

05Access and hospitality

NYRA sells general admission at a low price, reserved seats, box seats and premium products including the 1863 Club; picnic tables in the backyard are free with admission on a first-come basis, and morning training is open without a ticket.

06Where the social activity happens

The paddock walking ring under the trees, the best in America for watching horses at close range; the backyard picnic grounds; and, in town, Broadway's restaurants.

07Getting there

Commercial aviationAlbany International (ALB) is about forty minutes south and is the practical gateway.
RailAmtrak stops at Saratoga Springs, about three hours from Penn Station.
CarInterstate 87, exits 13N through 15; residents rent driveway parking along Union Avenue.
Private aviationSaratoga County Airport handles light aircraft five minutes from the track.

08Practicalities

DressSaratoga is a summer track and dresses like one, but with more care than most American racecourses. NYRA publishes seating-area requirements — jackets and collared shirts in the clubhouse and premium dining — while general admission and the picnic grounds are relaxed. The convention among regulars is seersucker, linen and a straw hat.
WeatherJuly and August in upstate New York are warm and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms that can turn the turf course to yielding within an hour.
Getting aroundThe track is a fifteen-minute walk or short ride from downtown, and on busy days walking is faster than driving.
HotelsA small hotel stock and a nine-week season produce the highest sustained summer rates in upstate New York, with multi-night minimums on the big weekends.
RestaurantsBroadway's restaurants run at capacity throughout the meet and take reservations weeks ahead for the anchor weekends.
Reservation timingNYRA opens seat and hospitality sales in the spring, with Travers and Whitney reserved seating going first; the rest of the meet can be arranged a couple of weeks out.
TicketsGeneral admission is inexpensive and available daily; reserved seats, box seats and premium products are sold through NYRA's own site, and morning training is open without a ticket.
HospitalityNYRA's published hospitality spans suites, verandas, buffet dining and the 1863 Club, sold directly with inclusions listed per product; the constraint is capacity, not eligibility.

09History

John Morrissey staged a four-day meet on the Oklahoma Track in 1863, then bought 125 acres across Union Avenue and opened the present course the following year. The Travers began in 1864, the oldest major thoroughbred race in the United States.

10Who is there

American owners, breeders, trainers and the bloodstock trade, many of whom take houses for the meet; New York families who have summered here for generations; and a very large regional public.
