Salone del Mobile is two events with one name. The fair occupies the Fiera Milano halls at Rho, fifteen kilometers northwest of the Duomo: nearly 170,000 square meters of stands, more than 1,900 exhibitors in 2026, and a structure that rotates on a two-year cycle. Every year brings the furniture exhibition, the accessories hall, Workplace3.0, S.Project and SaloneSatellite, the section for designers under thirty-five that Marva Griffin founded in 1998. Alternating years bring the specialist biennials: EuroCucina and the bathroom exhibition in even years, Euroluce in odd ones, which is why 2027 is the lighting year.

The second event is the Fuorisalone, the unofficial programme that spread out of the fair and into the city from the 1980s and now dwarfs it in footfall. It has no single organizer. Districts run themselves — Brera around the academy, Tortona in the converted industrial buildings south of the Navigli, 5Vie behind the Duomo, Isola, Durini, Porta Venezia, and Alcova, which takes over a different disused villa or estate each year. In 2024 more than 1,100 events were registered. Most are free, most are open to anyone who walks in, and the good ones have queues.

What holds the two together is that the trade goes to Rho in the morning and the city in the afternoon. The fair is where orders are written; the Fuorisalone is where the same companies, plus fashion houses, car makers and technology firms, build installations that have nothing to sell. Wikipedia records annual attendance at roughly 270,000 visitors from more than 150 countries, with 2018 reaching 434,509 across six days.

The two halves demand different clothes and different plans. Rho is an indoor trade environment with numbered halls, appointment diaries and stands built to be worked rather than photographed; the Fuorisalone is outdoors, unmapped in any useful sense, and dependent on whether the courtyard you want is open when you reach it. Visitors who treat the week as one event tend to do neither properly.

01Por que importa

No other week concentrates the design industry this way. Manufacturers, architects, interior designers, buyers, developers, editors and the fashion and automotive companies that have moved into the same territory are all in Milan for six days, and a large share of the year's furniture and lighting business is settled at Rho. The Fuorisalone has made the week culturally significant in a way a trade fair alone could not: it is when the largest houses stage their most ambitious non-commercial work, and when the city's private courtyards and unused buildings open to the public. In our reading the two now need each other — Rho supplies the reason 300,000 people come, the Fuorisalone the reason they stay past Thursday. There is also a straightforward economic fact behind it: Italy remains one of the largest furniture exporters in the world, and the manufacturers clustered in Brianza, half an hour north of the fairground, built the fair to reach buyers they could not otherwise meet. That relationship between a specific industrial region and a specific week in April is what Milan has and no other design city has managed to replicate.

02A semana ao seu redor

Milan is not a large city and design week fills it completely. The metro runs longer hours, the trams through Brera and Porta Venezia crawl, and the streets around Tortona and 5Vie are closed to traffic in places. Restaurants take design-week bookings months ahead and many run to a fixed programme. The Triennale, the Pinacoteca di Brera, the Fondazione Prada and the Museo del Novecento all program against the week, and many private palazzi and courtyards, normally shut, open free of charge. It is possible to spend five days in Milan this week, never go to Rho, and see a great deal. Public transport runs to extended timetables and the city publishes its own design-week maps; the Comune closes streets in the affected districts and the effect on ordinary Milanese life is real but tolerated. Anyone visiting Milan in the second half of April for reasons unconnected to design should know that the hotels, the restaurants and the trams will all be behaving abnormally.

03Quando chegar

Arrive Sunday or Monday. The Fuorisalone opens on the Monday and the first two days are the only ones on which the big installations can be seen without queuing; by Thursday the popular ones have hour-long lines. Go to Rho on the Tuesday or Wednesday and give it a full day — the fairground is large enough that half a day is wasted. Leave on the Saturday: the final weekend belongs to the public and to Milanese families, which is pleasant but a different event.

04Onde se hospedar

Brera and the Quadrilatero put you in the middle of the city programme and within walking distance of most of it; the Bulgari, the Four Seasons and the Mandarin Oriental are the landmarks, and all are booked far out. Porta Nuova and Isola are newer, better value and on the metro line that reaches Rho directly. Tortona is convenient if the design district is your reason for coming and inconvenient for everything else. Porta Romana is quieter and increasingly where the trade stays. Anywhere on the M1 red line is worth more than an extra star of hotel.

05Acesso e hospitalidade

The fair sells tickets through its own site and has historically restricted weekday sessions to trade visitors, admitting the general public on the Saturday and Sunday; we could not reach salonemilano.it to confirm the 2027 arrangement, so check the ticket page before travelling. Trade admission requires proof of profession at registration. The Fuorisalone is a different proposition: the great majority is free, unticketed and open to anyone, though the largest brand installations operate timed entry that fills within days of opening, and a handful of showroom evenings are by invitation. Alcova charges its own admission. No hospitality is sold by the fair.

06Onde ocorre a actividade social

Brera in the early evening, where the courtyards along Via Palermo and Via Solferino open and the streets close to cars. Tortona in the afternoon, which holds the largest installations. 5Vie behind the Duomo, the oldest and least commercial end of the programme. The Triennale in Parco Sempione, the week's civic center. Bar Basso in Porta Venezia has been the trade's unofficial meeting point for decades and is open to anyone prepared to stand outside it. The Navigli and Porta Romana absorb the late evening.

07Como chegar

Aviação comercialMalpensa (MXP) is the long-haul airport, about fifty minutes to the center by the Malpensa Express and closer to Rho than to Milan itself; Linate (LIN) is ten minutes from the center on the M4 and takes most European business traffic; Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY) serves the low-cost carriers, an hour out by coach.
ComboioMilano Centrale is the hub for Frecciarossa and Italo from Rome, Florence, Venice and Turin, and for international trains from Zurich, Paris, Munich and Vienna. Rho Fiera has its own mainline station as well as the metro stop, so some intercity services stop at the fairground directly.
AutomóvelAvoid. Milan operates the Area C congestion charge and the wider Area B low-emission zone, parking during design week is close to impossible, and the roads around Tortona and Brera are partly closed.
Aviação privadaLinate is the business-aviation field for Milan and has a dedicated terminal; Malpensa handles larger aircraft. Both are heavily booked in design week, and operators position at Bergamo or Turin when slots run out.
HelicópteroMilano Bresso, north of the city, is the general-aviation and helicopter field; there is no routine helicopter transfer into central Milan.

08Aspectos práticos

TrajeMilan dresses well and design week dresses deliberately; the industry uniform is dark, plain and expensive-looking rather than formal. Comfortable shoes matter more than anything: a full Fuorisalone day is fifteen kilometers on cobbles, and the fairground itself runs to several kilometers of hall. April evenings want a coat.
ClimaGenerally mild, sometimes wet. The 1991–2020 normals for Milan Linate give April a mean daily maximum of 19.3°C and a mean minimum of 8.4°C, with about 58 mm of rain across the month. April in Lombardy delivers a run of warm bright days and then two of steady rain without warning, and the courtyard installations are largely uncovered.
Deslocação e transporteThe M1 red line runs from the center to Rho Fiera Milano in about half an hour and is the only sensible way to the fair; trains are crowded from eight to ten and again from five. In the city, walking beats trams and taxis in Brera and 5Vie. Taxis are scarce all week and ride-hailing supply is thin by Milanese law. Tortona is on the M2 at Porta Genova.
HotéisThis is the tightest hotel week of the Milanese year, tighter than either fashion week, because the fair and the Fuorisalone bring different audiences at once. Rates across the city rise substantially and the center sells out months ahead. Apartments and rooms in Isola, Porta Romana and along the M1 are the realistic fallback, and many visitors stay as far out as Como or Turin and commute.
RestaurantesBook everything. Milan's restaurants take design-week reservations from January and the well-known rooms in Brera and the Quadrilatero are gone by February; many run set menus and shortened services. Lunch near Rho is limited to the fairground's own catering, which is adequate and slow. The trattorias in Porta Romana, Isola and the Navigli are easier, often better, and take walk-ins after nine.
Prazo para reservasHotels four to six months ahead for anything central, three months for the outer districts. Restaurants two to three months for the center. Timed slots for the largest brand installations open a few weeks before and are taken within days. Fair tickets can be bought much later, but trade registration should be completed in advance to avoid the entrance queues.
IngressosThe fair sells tickets on its own website, with separate categories for trade operators and, on the days it opens to them, for the general public; trade admission requires professional credentials at registration. The Fuorisalone requires no ticket and no registration for the overwhelming majority of its programme, which is free. A few venues — Alcova among them — charge admission and sell online. Museums and foundations charge normal entry.
HospitalidadeThe fair publishes no hospitality packages. What functions as hospitality is run by the exhibiting companies themselves — showroom dinners, press previews, brand receptions — all by invitation through the companies rather than the organizer, and not for sale. A visitor without any of that has more than enough to fill six days between the fairground, the districts and the museums, which is a genuine and unusual feature of this week.

09Histórico

The Salone was founded in 1961 to sell Italian furniture abroad, as the Milanese and Brianza manufacturers were building the industry that would define postwar Italian design; Wikipedia records the organizing company of that era as Cosmit. It grew international through the 1970s and 1980s, and it was then that the Fuorisalone began, as showroom openings in Durini and Brera for visitors who would not go out to the fairground. Two structural changes stand out: the fair's move from the old central Fiera site to Rho in 2005, which forced the city programme to become self-sufficient, and the arrival of the fashion houses at the Fuorisalone in the 2010s, which changed its scale and its audience. The biennial cycle deserves attention when planning: Euroluce, the lighting exhibition, and EuroCucina with the bathroom show are substantially different fairs, and which one falls in a given April changes both the composition of the halls and the kind of buyer who travels. 2027 is a Euroluce year, which historically draws the architects and specifiers rather than the furniture retailers.

10Quem está presente

Furniture and lighting manufacturers and their sales networks, which is what the fair is for; architects and interior designers in very large numbers; retail buyers, developers and hospitality groups; the design press; fashion, automotive and technology brands who exhibit at the Fuorisalone rather than at Rho; design students; and, on the closing weekend, the Milanese public. Collectors of historical and limited-edition design are present, but this is not primarily a collectors' fair — that is Design Miami's territory.
