Royal Ascot is a five-day flat meeting on the heath in Berkshire, six miles from Windsor Castle. It is Britain's most valuable race meeting and carries eight Group One races: the Queen Anne and St James's Palace Stakes on Tuesday, the Prince of Wales's Stakes on Wednesday, the Gold Cup on Thursday, the Coronation Stakes and Commonwealth Cup on Friday, the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes on Saturday. Around 500 horses run, from Britain, Ireland and France and increasingly from Australia, Japan and the United States.

The meeting is four enclosures with different admission, sightlines and dress rules. The Royal Enclosure is open to Members and guests they sponsor, badges released from January. Queen Anne is the senior public enclosure; the Village, added in 2017, runs Thursday to Saturday; Windsor is least formal and permits picnics. Each day opens with the Royal Procession at two o'clock, a line of landaus down the straight mile that has run in some form since 1825. What a visitor experiences depends almost entirely on which badge is in their pocket.

01Waarom het relevant is

Royal Ascot is the fixture the rest of the British summer is arranged around: Chelsea, Epsom, Queen's, Wimbledon, Henley and Goodwood all take their date logic partly from where it falls. It is also the one week when international flat racing, British formal dress and the monarchy's own calendar occupy the same field. In our reading its significance is less the racing than the fact that this is one of the last large public occasions in Europe where a published dress code is enforced at the gate and nobody finds that strange.

02De week eromheen

Ascot village and the towns around it change completely: road closures each morning, a heavy rail service, hotels from Windsor to Egham full by Tuesday. London's effect is quieter — the week pulls people out during the day and returns them for the evening. The bandstand singalong after the last race is open to Queen Anne and Windsor badge holders. Milliners and morning-dress hire firms run their busiest fortnight beforehand.

03Wanneer aan te komen

Thursday is the fullest single day — Gold Cup, the biggest crowd, the most hats — and Saturday the most relaxed. For the week, arrive Monday evening and leave Sunday. Gates open two hours before the first race, and the walk from the station is longer than newcomers expect; be settled by half past one for the procession.

04Waar te verblijven

Windsor puts you six miles out with a proper town around you, and the country-house properties around Ascot, Bagshot and Sunningdale are the local landmarks. Central London is what most international visitors choose: direct trains from Waterloo, better evenings, ninety minutes of travel bracketing each day. Rooms within a few miles of the course are the tightest supply in the calendar that week.

05Toegang en hospitality

Royal Enclosure admission is on application and limited to Members and guests they sponsor, with applications opening in January. Queen Anne, Village and Windsor tickets are sold publicly — from £25 and £80 for 2027 — and accompanied children are admitted free in most enclosures. Ascot sells hospitality directly across restaurants, boxes and garden packages, a separate channel from admission. Parking and picnic rules are enclosure-specific.

06Waar de sociale activiteit plaatsvindt

The parade ring rail before each race, the Queen Anne lawn, the bandstand at the close, and the Windsor Enclosure car parks, where picnicking off the tailgate is a genuine tradition. Off course, Windsor's riverside pubs and the Mayfair and St James's bars that absorb the returning trains from about eight o'clock.

07Hoe u er komt

Commerciële luchtvaartHeathrow is 15 miles away and the natural arrival; Gatwick about 45 miles.
TreinSouth Western Railway from Waterloo, under an hour, heavily reinforced; the station is a seven-minute walk from the course.
AutoM3 junction 3 or M4 junction 6. A raceday one-way system operates and car park badges are sold by enclosure in advance.
PrivéluchtvaartFarnborough and Luton are the usual business-aviation options.
HelikopterAscot operates a helicopter landing area for the meeting, booked through the racecourse.

08Praktische informatie

DresscodeThe racecourse publishes and enforces a dress code by enclosure, applied by stewards at the gate. In the Royal Enclosure men wear black, grey or navy morning dress with waistcoat, tie and top hat; women wear formal daywear with a hat whose base measures at least four inches, dresses just above the knee or longer, straps an inch or wider — fascinators are not permitted. Queen Anne requires a hat or headpiece for women and a suit, shirt and tie for men; the Village is slightly relaxed; Windsor has no formal code beyond smart daywear. Heels sink on grass — the lawns are not paved.
WeerMid-June in Berkshire is warm and unreliable: pleasant afternoons in the low twenties Celsius are typical, but the meeting has been run in heat and steady rain in successive years, and going can change across the week.
Verplaatsing ter plaatseRail is the sensible choice — extra services from Waterloo, a short walk at the far end. Driving works only with a pre-purchased car park badge; departure after the last race is slow in every direction and taxis are heavily constrained.
HotelsSupply within ten miles is thin and spoken for early; Windsor, Bagshot, Sunningdale and Egham are effectively full. London bases are easier but not cheap in June.
RestaurantsAscot runs a large on-course dining programme, bookable in advance. Off course, Windsor and Bray absorb the evening trade, and the Bray restaurants take bookings a long way out.
ReserveringstimingRoyal Enclosure badges go through Members from January; public tickets and hospitality open in autumn or early winter. Hotels near the course need several months, and Ascot's hospitality regularly sells out before spring.
TicketsGeneral admission is sold for the Windsor, Queen Anne and Village enclosures, listed from £25 and £80 respectively for 2027; the Village operates Thursday to Saturday only. Royal Enclosure admission is not sold publicly — it is available to Members and guests they sponsor, and listed as price on application.
HospitalityAscot sells hospitality directly — private boxes, restaurant packages, garden and lawn packages within each enclosure — publishing what each tier includes. Packages inside the Royal Enclosure remain tied to Royal Enclosure eligibility, and third-party resale of badges is restricted.

09Geschiedenis

Queen Anne founded the course in 1711 on ground near Windsor where horses could gallop at full stretch; the first meeting followed that August. The Gold Cup, added in 1807, remains the oldest surviving race and the anchor of Thursday, and the Royal Procession dates to 1825. A redevelopment reopened the grandstand in 2006, moving the parade ring and changing how the enclosures relate to one another; the Village arrived in 2017 as a middle register between Queen Anne's formality and Windsor's informality.

10Wie is er

Owners and breeders from Britain, Ireland, France and increasingly the Gulf, Japan and Australia; trainers and stable staff; the bloodstock trade, which treats the week as a shop window before the summer sales; corporate hospitality from the City; and a very large public across Windsor and Queen Anne, for whom it is a day out rather than an obligation.
