View of Gallery III in Burlington House during "Varnishing Day" 2015, the artists' opening of the Royal Academy Summer, Royal Academy Summer Exhibition The rooms of the Society of Antiquaries at Burlington House are sometimes used by other organisations, Royal Academy Summer Exhibition Burlington House, Royal Academy Summer Exhibition Burlington House, Royal Academy Summer Exhibition

The Summer Exhibition is the oldest continuously staged contemporary art exhibition anywhere, held without a break since 1769, and it works on a principle no other institution of its rank still uses: anyone may enter. Artists submit digitally, a committee of Royal Academicians selects from the entries, and the accepted works are hung alongside pieces by Academicians and invited artists in the Main Galleries at Burlington House. A different Academician coordinates each year and sets the show's temper - Michael Craig-Martin in 2015, Grayson Perry in 2018, Farshid Moussavi in 2025, Ryan Gander in 2026 - which is why the exhibition can feel austere one summer and riotous the next.

The hang is the point. Rooms are filled floor to ceiling in the salon manner, small etchings beside large canvases, architectural models in their own gallery, an unbroken wall of prints, and a first-time exhibitor next to a Royal Academician of forty years' standing. Almost everything carries a number and a price in the printed list, and almost everything is for sale, with the Royal Academy taking a commission that supports the RA Schools, where postgraduate students study free of charge. Prizes are awarded across categories, the largest being the Charles Wollaston Award.

Before the public opening come the Sending-In days, the selection, and Varnishing Day, when exhibiting artists see the hang for the first time and walk in procession from Burlington House to St James's Church, Piccadilly, for a service. That procession, brass band and all, is the one part of the private week that happens on a public street.

01Perché è rilevante

The Summer Exhibition is the largest open exhibition in Britain and the only place in the London season where an unknown artist's work hangs on the same wall as an Academician's on equal terms. That is a genuine institutional commitment rather than a gesture: the selection is blind to reputation at the first stage, entries run into five figures, and the sales it generates fund the free postgraduate teaching at the RA Schools. Critically it is a soft target - the salon hang guarantees unevenness, and reviewers say so every June - but the criticism misreads the function. In our reading, the show's value is as a public census of what is being made in Britain in a given year, taken annually for two and a half centuries, and as the most accessible art occasion in a London summer that otherwise runs on private views. It also marks the opening of the capital's summer cultural season, arriving in the same fortnight as Trooping the Colour and Royal Ascot.

02La settimana intorno all'evento

The exhibition runs for ten weeks, so it does not create a single congested week; its effect is spread across the London summer and it functions as the fixed point people schedule other things around. The opening fortnight in June is the busy one, coinciding with Trooping the Colour, the run-up to Royal Ascot and the height of the London auction calendar, when Mayfair and St James's are already full. Piccadilly, Cork Street, Bond Street and the St James's galleries mount their own summer shows in the same weeks and the walk between them is the natural way to spend an afternoon. By late July and August the crowd thins markedly and the galleries at Burlington House become one of the better places in central London to spend a hot afternoon.

03Quando arrivare

Go on a weekday morning, and preferably in July rather than the opening fortnight, when the rooms are calmer and it is possible to stand back from a wall. Allow two hours at minimum; the salon hang defeats a quick pass. If you want the social version of the exhibition, the first two weeks after opening are when the art world is in the building. The late-night openings the Academy runs through the summer are the pleasantest compromise.

04Dove alloggiare

Mayfair and St James's put you at the door and in the middle of the gallery district; Piccadilly, Albemarle Street and Dover Street are the immediate addresses. Soho and Covent Garden are ten to fifteen minutes on foot with more restaurants and lower rates. Marylebone and Fitzrovia are a short taxi and quieter at night. There is no need to be close: Green Park and Piccadilly Circus stations are both a few minutes away and the exhibition is not a timed occasion.

05Accesso e ospitalità

Admission is ticketed and sold by the Royal Academy through its own site, with timed entry at busy periods and concessions published; Friends of the Royal Academy enter free and unlimited, which is the standard route for regular visitors and includes the members' rooms at Burlington House. The Academy runs late openings on selected evenings through the summer and a programme of talks and tours alongside the show. Works are sold from the exhibition through the RA's sales desk; the printed list of works and prices is the catalogue, and buyers collect at the end of the run. Corporate entertaining and private views are arranged through the Academy's development office and are not publicly sold. No admission price is quoted here because the 2027 exhibition had not opened for booking.

06Dove si svolge l'attività sociale

Inside, the Academy's courtyard at Burlington House is the gathering point - it holds a large installation most summers and is free to walk into from Piccadilly - along with the Senate Rooms, the RA's restaurant and the terrace. Outside, the exhibition anchors an afternoon that continues along Cork Street and Savile Row into the Mayfair galleries, the auction houses on Bond Street and St James's, and the cafes of Burlington Arcade. In the evening the crowd is absorbed by the restaurants and hotel bars of Mayfair and St James's and the clubs of Dover Street and Albemarle Street. The Varnishing Day procession along Piccadilly to St James's Church is public and worth catching if the dates line up.

07Come arrivare

Aviazione commercialeHeathrow is 45 to 60 minutes by the Piccadilly line direct to Green Park or Piccadilly Circus; Gatwick 30 minutes by train to Victoria plus a short hop; London City about 30 minutes by DLR and Underground.
TrenoGreen Park and Piccadilly Circus are each a three-minute walk from Burlington House; Bond Street on the Elizabeth line is ten minutes. Eurostar arrives at St Pancras International, 20 minutes away by Underground.
AutoNot worth it. Piccadilly is inside the congestion charge and ULEZ zones, parking is scarce and metered, and taxis set down on Piccadilly itself, which is slow at any hour.
Aviazione privataFarnborough, Luton, Biggin Hill and Northolt are the usual London choices, all between 45 minutes and an hour and a half from Mayfair by road.
ElicotteroThe London Heliport at Battersea is about 20 minutes by road from Piccadilly.

08Aspetti pratici

AbbigliamentoNone. This is a public gallery in central London and ordinary clothes are correct at any time. Private views and the Academy's own evening events are dressier without being formal - a jacket, a good dress - and Varnishing Day has its own tradition of artists dressing as they please, which is part of the spectacle.
MeteoThe run covers the warmest weeks of the London year. Mid-June typically brings highs around 21C, July and August 23 to 24C with occasional stretches above 30C, and 45 to 55 mm of rain a month. Burlington House is cool inside and the courtyard is a suntrap; the galleries are the sensible destination on a hot afternoon.
Come spostarsiEverything about this is walkable. Green Park, Piccadilly Circus and Bond Street stations surround the building, and the whole Mayfair and St James's gallery circuit is on foot from the door. Piccadilly traffic is slow all day, so the Underground beats a taxi over any distance under two miles.
HotelThe exhibition puts no pressure on hotel supply by itself - it runs for ten weeks and most visitors are Londoners. Mayfair and St James's rates follow the general London summer curve, firmest in June and softening in August. Booking a few weeks ahead is sufficient unless the trip coincides with Royal Ascot or the June auction week.
RistorantiThe Academy has its own restaurant and cafes on site, which fill at lunchtime in the opening weeks. Around it, Mayfair and St James's carry London's densest concentration of serious kitchens and its most heavily booked; anything on Mount Street, Dover Street or Jermyn Street wants a reservation. Burlington Arcade and the streets behind Piccadilly handle a walk-in lunch.
Tempistiche di prenotazioneTickets can generally be had a few days ahead outside the opening fortnight and school holidays; Friends need none. Mayfair restaurant tables want two to four weeks in June, less in August. Nothing about this exhibition requires long-range planning.
BigliettiThe Royal Academy sells timed tickets through its own site and at the door subject to availability, with concessions and free entry for under-16s and for Friends of the RA. Friends' membership is open to the public and is the usual route for anyone visiting more than twice. No price is stated here because the 2027 exhibition had not gone on sale when this record was written; the 2026 figures should be refreshed from the RA's own page.
OspitalitàThe Royal Academy offers corporate membership, private views and venue hire at Burlington House through its development and events teams; terms are not published. There is no hospitality package attached to the exhibition itself. Artists selected for the show receive their own Varnishing Day access, which is not transferable or purchasable.

09Storia

The Royal Academy was founded in 1768 after a group of artists petitioned George III, and the first exhibition followed in 1769 with 136 works. It has been staged every year since, through two world wars, making it the longest unbroken run of any contemporary art exhibition. The name 'Summer Exhibition' dates from 1870. For much of the nineteenth century it was the central event of the British art market and a fixture of the London season, with the press covering the hang as news; Varnishing Day, when artists were permitted a final coat of varnish and some notoriously repainted in situ, is the survival of that period. Burlington House on Piccadilly has been the Academy's home since 1867, and the 2018 expansion into the neighbouring Burlington Gardens building for the Academy's 250th anniversary gave the institution a second entrance and a linked campus.

10Chi è presente

Friends of the Royal Academy, who make up a large share of visitors and treat the show as an annual habit; British artists, students and teachers, including the several thousand who submit each year and their families; London gallerists, collectors and buyers, particularly in the first fortnight; architects, who follow the architecture room closely; and a broad general and tourist public across the ten weeks. Buying at the Summer Exhibition skews toward first-time and modest collectors, since a large part of the hang is priced in the hundreds and low thousands.
