Ngày Đã xác nhậnThe Cruising Yacht Club of Australia confirms the start as Boxing Day, 26 December 2026, continuing the unbroken pattern held every year since 1945. The end date given here is an approximate finishing window, not an organizer-published closing date: the race has no single finish moment, since boats arrive in Hobart over several days depending on their speed and the weather, historically from as little as a day and a half for the fastest boats to nearly a week for the slowest finishers. Dự kiếnNot separately announced as of September 2026, but estimated with high confidence from the race's unbroken Boxing Day start on 26 December, observed every year since 1945. The end date is an approximate finishing window rather than a published date, for the same reason given for the 2026 edition.

The Sydney Hobart starts in conditions built for spectacle: a Boxing Day afternoon start off Sydney Harbour, with the harbor foreshore, ferries and pleasure craft turned out to watch the fleet beat out through the Heads and turn south. What follows is considerably less gentle. The 628-nautical-mile course runs down the New South Wales coast, across the often violent Bass Strait between the Australian mainland and Tasmania, and down Tasmania's east coast to the Derwent River and Hobart, a passage that regularly delivers gale-force headwinds, large seas and, on at least one occasion, conditions that killed sailors. The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia runs the race with the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania handling the Hobart finish, and Rolex has been title sponsor for decades.

Fleets in recent editions have run from roughly 85 to about 128 starters, smaller and more specialized than the entry lists of the Mediterranean's superyacht regattas or the Fastnet's oversubscribed fields, reflecting a race that demands a genuinely offshore-capable boat and a qualified crew rather than simply an entry fee. Line-honours contenders — the fastest boats, racing for the fastest elapsed time rather than handicap-corrected placing — draw the most attention, but the overall handicap winner, decided under IRC rating once every finisher is in, is the race's principal prize. A two-handed division, for crews of two sailing under specific safety rules, was introduced in 2020 and first raced in 2021, widening the race's field beyond fully crewed maxis and grand-prix boats.

01Lý do quan trọng

Sailors and the Australian press routinely describe this as yachting's equivalent of climbing Everest, a description that has as much to do with the danger of the Bass Strait crossing as with the race's prestige. It is the oldest and most storied ocean race in the Southern Hemisphere, run without a break for eighty-one years including through the Second World War's immediate aftermath, and its Boxing Day start has become part of the Australian summer's public calendar in a way few sailing events achieve anywhere: the fleet's departure from Sydney Harbour draws a nationally televised audience far larger than the sport's usual reach.

In our reading, the race's authority rests specifically on the unpredictability of the Bass Strait leg, which has produced both extraordinary sailing and, in 1998, tragedy, and which means no amount of budget guarantees an easy passage. That combination — a fixed, famous date, a genuinely dangerous course, and finish-line drama in Hobart that can run for the better part of a week — has kept the race central to Australian ocean racing even as newer, richer regattas have opened up around the world.

02Tuần lễ xung quanh sự kiện

Sydney over Christmas and Boxing Day is already at its own summer peak, and the race start adds a specific, city-wide public event to the middle of it: vantage points around the harbor foreshore, the Heads and the eastern suburbs' headlands fill with spectators, and a large spectator fleet of pleasure boats follows the racers out to the Heads before turning back. In Hobart, the fleet's arrival over the following days coincides with the city's own summer festival season on the Derwent waterfront, historically timed alongside the Taste of Tasmania food festival, and Constitution Dock becomes the public gathering point as boats finish, at any hour of the day or night, through the following week.

03Thời điểm đến

For the start, Boxing Day itself is the point of the visit; arriving in Sydney a day or two before allows time to find a foreshore vantage point, since the harbor is crowded by mid-morning. Following the race to Hobart requires traveling separately and arriving several days later, since the fastest boats typically take a day and a half to three days and the fleet continues finishing for days afterward.

04Nơi lưu trú

In Sydney, the eastern harborside suburbs and the CBD's harbor-facing hotels give the most direct access to start-day vantage points, though popular headlands such as South Head are public land reachable by anyone rather than tied to any specific accommodation. In Hobart, the waterfront around Constitution Dock and Salamanca Place is the obvious base for following the finish, within walking distance of the docks where boats arrive.

05Tiếp cận và tiếp đón

Racing entry is through the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia's published Notice of Race, open to qualifying offshore yachts and crews meeting category and safety-training requirements; there is no public ticket for spectating, since the start is watched from public harborside land and water and the Hobart finish is likewise open to the public at the docks. Commercial spectator-boat charters operate on Sydney Harbour for race day, including boats permitted inside the course exclusion zone, but these are third-party commercial offerings rather than anything sold by the organizer.

06Nơi diễn ra các hoạt động giao lưu

Sydney Harbour's public foreshore — the Opera House forecourt, the Domain, Nielsen Park and the headlands out toward South Head — is where the start is watched by the general public, free of charge. In Hobart, Constitution Dock and the Salamanca waterfront are the public heart of the finish, with the docks themselves open for anyone to walk among the arriving yachts. The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia's own clubhouse at Rushcutters Bay and the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania's premises in Hobart are members' and competitors' spaces rather than public venues.

Hàng không thương mạiSydney Kingsford Smith (SYD) is a major international gateway with direct long-haul service from across the Pacific, Asia, the Middle East and beyond. Hobart International Airport (HBA) is smaller, served mainly from mainland Australian cities, with connections typically routed through Melbourne or Sydney.
Đường sắtSydney has an extensive metropolitan rail and ferry network reaching most harborside vantage points; Tasmania has no passenger rail, and Hobart is reached from the airport by road only.

08Thông tin thực tiễn

Trang phụcThere is no dress code for spectators at either end; harborside viewing in Sydney calls for sun protection and casual summer clothing, and Hobart's docks are informal and often cool at night when boats finish in the early hours.
Thời tiếtSydney at the start is in the height of the Australian summer, with daytime temperatures commonly in the high twenties Celsius; conditions at sea are the race's defining variable, since Bass Strait can produce anything from a fast downwind run to the gale-force southerly busters that have caused the race's worst years. Hobart is typically milder than Sydney in late December and early January. No station normals were sourced for this record.
Di chuyển trong khu vựcSydney's public transport reaches most harborside viewing points and is the practical way to avoid Boxing Day traffic and parking pressure; Hobart's compact waterfront is easily walked once there.
Khách sạnSydney hotel demand over Christmas and New Year is already at its annual peak independent of the race; book well ahead. Hobart's smaller hotel stock also runs tight over the same period, driven as much by the city's own summer festival season as by the race.
Nhà hàngBoth cities are busy with their own summer holiday trade during the race; reservations are advisable in Sydney's harborside suburbs and in Hobart's Salamanca and waterfront precincts.
Thời điểm đặt chỗBook Sydney and Hobart accommodation months ahead, since both cities' Christmas and New Year demand is driven mainly by the holiday season rather than the race alone. No ticket is needed for spectating at either end.
VéThere is no ticket for spectating on public land or water at either end of the race. Racing entry is through the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia's Notice of Race; entry fees and eligibility requirements are set there and are not quoted here. Commercial operators sell places on spectator boats permitted within the Sydney start's exclusion zone, priced independently of the organizer.
Tiếp đónThe organizer sells no public hospitality package; its own functions around the start and the Hobart prizegiving are for competitors, officials and members. Commercial spectator-boat operators sell packages for race day independently, which we note as a public option without describing or endorsing any specific operator.

09Lịch sử

The race began in 1945 when the British-born yachtsman and naval officer John Illingworth suggested turning what nine Sydney sailors had planned as a leisurely cruise to Hobart into a race; Illingworth's Rani, the smallest boat in the fleet, sailed into Hobart's Constitution Dock on New Year's Day 1946 and the informal contest became an annual fixture. Fleets grew through the following decades into the hundreds at their peak in the 1990s and early 2000s.

The defining event in the race's history is the 1998 edition, in which an unforecast, extremely violent storm in Bass Strait sank five yachts and killed six sailors, in what became the largest peacetime search-and-rescue operation Australia had mounted; only 44 of 115 starters finished. The disaster led directly to stricter safety requirements, including mandatory sea-survival training and safety equipment standards that now apply to every entrant. On the water, Wild Oats XI became the race's dominant modern name, winning line honours nine times and, in 2012, becoming the first yacht to take line honours, the handicap win and the course record in the same edition. The monohull elapsed-time record of one day, nine hours, fifteen minutes and twenty-four seconds was set by Ian Walker's Comanche (also raced as LDV Comanche) in 2017 and stood into the current decade.
