Goodwood sits on a shoulder of the South Downs 500 feet above Chichester, and on a clear day the Isle of Wight is visible from the grandstand. Part of the Duke of Richmond's estate, it has run its principal meeting since 1802: five days with the Goodwood Cup, the Sussex Stakes, the Nassau Stakes and Saturday's Stewards' Cup.

The course is peculiar and much loved, and three enclosures divide the crowd: Richmond, for Members and their guests; Gordon, the main public enclosure; and Lennox, the family option.

01Why it matters

Goodwood is where the British season's formality drops away — six weeks after Ascot, it stops wearing morning dress and puts on a linen suit. In our reading its standing rests on the setting, the best of any racecourse in England, and on its position between the London season and the August coast.

02The week around it

Chichester, five miles south, is the base and the week fills it; the Chichester Festival Theatre runs its summer season concurrently, which makes the evenings unusually good.

03When to arrive

Come Tuesday and stay to Saturday if you can; Saturday has the largest crowd and Wednesday the best racing.

04Where to stay

Chichester is the most useful base, with a walkable center and the theatre; the Goodwood Hotel is on the estate and the Downs villages hold good pubs with rooms.

05Access and hospitality

Gordon and Lennox admission is sold publicly for all five days, with Richmond restricted to Members and their guests and the racecourse's own membership scheme the route in.

06Where the social activity happens

The lawn in front of the grandstand, the parade ring, and the ridge above the straight; the Trundle is public land and people have watched from it free for a century.

07Getting there

Commercial aviationGatwick is about an hour by road; Heathrow and Southampton further.
RailChichester from London Victoria in about ninety minutes, with a racecourse shuttle bus.
CarA3 or A24 to the A27, then up onto the Downs; parking is sold by area.
Private aviationGoodwood Aerodrome is on the estate and takes light aircraft.
HelicopterThe estate operates a helicopter landing area during the festival.
MarinasChichester Harbour is twenty minutes away.

08Practicalities

DressGoodwood publishes a dress code by enclosure and it is the most agreeable in British racing. Richmond requires a jacket and tie for men — cravats are specifically not accepted in place of a tie — with jeans, shorts and trainers excluded; Gordon drops that rule and Lennox is relaxed. The real convention is the linen suit and the panama hat.
WeatherLate July on the South Downs is the warmest, driest stretch of the English year, but the course is exposed and sea fog off the Solent has stopped racing.
Getting aroundThe train to Chichester plus the racecourse shuttle is the least stressful route; the drive down is slow, as everyone leaves by the same lanes.
HotelsChichester and the surrounding villages fill for the five days, but a couple of months' notice is usually enough.
RestaurantsThe racecourse operates restaurants and boxes as hospitality; Chichester's restaurants take festival-week bookings a few weeks ahead.
Reservation timingTickets go on sale in the winter and the festival does not usually sell out, though Saturday and the Richmond allocations tighten.
TicketsDay tickets and multi-day packages for the Gordon and Lennox enclosures are sold through Goodwood's own site, with Richmond limited to Members and their guests; the Trundle, the hill above the course, gives a free if distant view.
HospitalityPrivate boxes and restaurant packages are sold by the racecourse with inclusions published per package; the Richmond membership scheme is open to applicants.

09History

The third Duke of Richmond staged the first meeting in 1802 for the officers of the Sussex Militia, and the family has run it ever since; Goodwood is one of very few major British racecourses still in private hands. Edward VII's description of it as a garden party with racing attached is quoted at the course to this day.

10Who is there

British and Irish owners and trainers, with the sprinting and miling divisions well represented; the Sussex and Hampshire county set; and a large public across Gordon and Lennox.
