Europe's richest flat race and the closest thing racing has to a world championship, run over 2,400 metres at ParisLongchamp in early October.

Two days, twenty races and one that matters more than the rest. The Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe is run over 2,400 metres on turf at ParisLongchamp, in the Bois de Boulogne, on the first Sunday in October. It carries a purse of €5 million and is the only race that regularly assembles the season's best middle-distance horses from Britain, Ireland, France and Japan in one field. Saturday carries several Group races and the Qatar Arabian World Cup; Sunday holds the Arc and a further stack of Group Ones.
Longchamp reopened in 2018 after a four-year rebuild — the Arc ran at Chantilly in the interim — and the course is now one continuous grandstand of glass and pale concrete, a long lawn in front, the old windmill still on the far turn. Access is layered rather than gated by membership, from a five-euro lawn ticket up through restaurant and hospitality tiers. What distinguishes the day from its British equivalents is how unceremonial it is: no procession, no morning dress, no rule about hats.
01Por qué es relevante
The Arc is the settlement of the European flat season. Horses are trained toward it from spring, and a Derby or a King George is read partly as an Arc trial. Its €5 million purse makes it the richest turf race in Europe, and Japanese owners have pursued it for three decades as the one European prize that would validate their breeding programme. In our reading the weekend's position matters as much as the race — it lands in the same Paris fortnight as the spring-summer shows and the autumn art week.
02La semana en torno al evento
Arc weekend arrives at the tail of one of the fullest fortnights in the Paris year. Fashion week and the October art week sit on either side of it, and the hotel market is under pressure for reasons unrelated to racing. The Bois changes only for the two days: shuttle buses, restrictions on the Route des Tribunes, a temporary village on the lawn.
03Cuándo llegar
Arrive Friday. Saturday's card is good racing with a fraction of Sunday's crowd and the better day to walk the course. Sunday requires being on site by early afternoon — the Arc runs mid-afternoon and the enclosures fill from lunchtime. Leave Monday.
04Dónde alojarse
The 16th arrondissement is the logical base — Passy, Trocadéro and Auteuil are closest to the Bois, with the course a short drive or a walk through the park. The Right Bank corridor along the Rue Saint-Honoré puts you in the middle of the city's October activity but adds thirty minutes each way. Booking pressure comes from fashion week, not racing.
05Acceso y hospitalidad
France Galop sells the whole meeting through its own platform and publishes prices openly. For 2026: an Arc Village Sunday ticket from €5, general entry from €20, the Winning Post Gold enclosure from €60, parking from €5, then a hospitality ladder running from €80 to €827 with the Panorama restaurant on request. Nothing requires membership.
06Dónde tiene lugar la actividad social
The parade ring below the grandstand, the terraces facing the winning post, the lawn and the restaurant floors. Off course, the hotel bars around Trocadéro and Avenue Montaigne and the restaurants in the Bois. The Japanese-facing restaurants around Rue Sainte-Anne fill on Sunday evening in a way particular to this weekend.

08Aspectos prácticos
09Historia
The race was created in 1920 and named for the Arc de Triomphe to mark the Allied victory parade of 1919; the first running was won by Comrade. It was designed as an international championship when European racing was inward-looking, and took that role permanently after the Second World War. Qatari sponsorship arrived in 2008 and lifted the purse beyond anything else in Europe. A rule barring geldings was lifted with effect from 2027.
10Quién está ahí
European owners and breeders, with the Coolmore and Godolphin operations and the French owner-breeders at the center; the Japanese racing industry and a large Japanese travelling public; the bloodstock trade ahead of the autumn sales; Qatari racing interests as title sponsor; and a substantial Parisian public on the Bois lawn.
