The Presidents Cup was created by the PGA Tour in 1994 to give the players ineligible for the Ryder Cup, everyone outside Europe, a team competition of their own. Twelve Americans face twelve internationals across foursomes, fourballs and Sunday singles, thirty matches in all, with six players a side qualifying on points and six chosen by the captain. There is no prize money; the tour distributes funds to charities nominated by the players.

It alternates with the Ryder Cup in even-numbered years and moves between American and international venues. The competition's persistent problem is balance: the International Team has won once, at Royal Melbourne in 1998, and tied once, in South Africa in 2003. What the event does reliably deliver is a well-run, accessible team week at a good course, with far easier access than a Ryder Cup.

01Warum es relevant ist

The Presidents Cup matters most to the players it was invented for: for Australians, South Africans, Japanese, Korean and Latin American professionals it is the only team competition at this level, and the International Team's identity has become a genuine cause within the game. In our reading it sits a clear step below the Ryder Cup in atmosphere and international draw, and it is the better week to actually attend for exactly that reason.

02Die Woche darum

American editions land in a large metropolitan area and are absorbed by it. Chicago in late September 2026 will not notice the event outside the western suburbs, where the DuPage hotel corridor and the towns around Medinah and Itasca will fill.

03Anreisezeitpunkt

Practice days from Tuesday to Wednesday are cheap and quiet; the Thursday opening session is the first day of competition under the current format.

04Unterkunft

For the 2026 match, the practical bases are the DuPage and northwest suburban hotel clusters around Itasca, Schaumburg and Oak Brook, all within twenty to thirty minutes of the course and with deep capacity, or downtown Chicago, forty-five minutes away and a far better place to spend an evening.

05Zugang und Hospitality

The PGA Tour sells tickets directly through the competition's own site, with practice-day tickets, individual competition days and weekly options, and it opens sales well ahead of the match. Unlike the Ryder Cup, there is no ballot and general admission is available on ordinary terms, which makes this the most straightforward team event in golf to attend.

06Wo das gesellschaftliche Geschehen stattfindet

On site, the spectator village, the merchandise pavilion and the grandstands at the closing holes are the public gathering points, along with the first tee, where the team introductions draw the day's largest crowd.

07Anreise

LinienluftfahrtFor the 2026 match, Chicago O'Hare is about twenty-five minutes from Medinah; Midway is on the wrong side of the city at around an hour.
BahnMetra's Milwaukee District West line runs from Union Station to Medinah and Itasca, which puts the course within reach by train.
AutoA car is the default. The course sits between Route 53 and the I-290 corridor, and the tour runs park-and-ride sites with shuttles.
PrivatluftfahrtChicago Executive at Wheeling and DuPage Airport at West Chicago are the closest fields, with Midway as the larger alternative.
HubschrauberNo landing at the venue and no published shuttle service.

08Praktische Hinweise

KleidungGolf clothing with team colours common among supporters.
WetterLate September around Chicago typically brings daily highs of 21 to 23C, about 70 to 74F, with lows near 12C and a moderate chance of rain.
Vor Ort navigierenUse the official park-and-ride or the Metra line; there is no spectator parking at the course. Allow an hour from downtown Chicago on match mornings.
HotelsThe western suburbs have large business-hotel capacity that absorbs the match without difficulty, and downtown Chicago is unaffected.
RestaurantsNothing worth booking near the venue. Chicago's restaurants take reservations on their normal cycle and the match does not move them; book the well-known rooms three or four weeks ahead.
ReservierungszeitpunktTickets go on sale roughly a year ahead and remain available far longer than for the Ryder Cup. Hotels three months out. Hospitality is sold from about eighteen months.
TicketsSold directly by the PGA Tour through the competition site: practice days, individual competition days and weekly tickets, with no ballot and general availability.
HospitalityThe tour publishes an official hospitality programme of course-side venues, suites and club facilities with inclusive food and drink, sold as upgrades to admission, plus official travel partners in some markets.

09Geschichte

The first match was played in 1994 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia and the competition was conceived as a PGA Tour property from the start, which distinguishes it from the Ryder Cup's joint administration.

10Wer ist dort

A regional American golf crowd at United States editions, with corporate hospitality from the host city's business community, the PGA Tour's own sponsor network, and a modest but committed international following that travels for the away matches, particularly Australians and South Africans.
