The PGA Championship is run by the PGA of America, the body representing the country's teaching and club professionals rather than the tour players, and that ownership shows in the entry list. The field of 156 is the strongest of the four majors by world ranking, and it also includes club professionals who qualify through the association's own championship. No other major puts a working head professional from a municipal course into the same draw as the world number one.

The championship moved from August to May in 2019 and now occupies the weekend before Memorial Day weekend. It rotates without a formal rota; 2026 was played at Aronimink outside Philadelphia and 2027 goes to Fields Ranch East at PGA Frisco, the association's own headquarters campus, on a Gil Hanse course stretching to nearly 7,900 yards. Competitively it is the least idiosyncratic of the majors: no invitational field, no punitive national setup, no links weather, just a hard course and the deepest field of the year.

01Why it matters

The PGA Championship's claim on the calendar rests on the field rather than on ceremony, and among players it is often the major regarded as the truest measure of who is playing well. In our reading it is a golf event that draws golf people, and the 2027 edition in Texas will be judged on whether a purpose-built championship campus can generate the atmosphere an older club supplies for free.

Host areas are usually large metropolitan suburbs rather than destinations, so the championship joins an existing city rather than taking one over.

03When to arrive

Practice rounds run Monday to Wednesday and are the cheapest and quietest way to walk the course. Thursday and Friday give you both halves of the draw.

04Where to stay

For 2027 the on-site resort at PGA Frisco is the closest option and will be contracted early; the hotel corridors along the Dallas North Tollway through Frisco and Plano are minutes away and have deep capacity, and Dallas itself is thirty-five to forty-five minutes south with far better restaurants and a proper city evening.

05Access and hospitality

The PGA of America sells tickets through the championship's own site and opens a ticket registration or interest list well ahead of general sale, which is how the 2027 championship at Frisco was first offered.

06Where the social activity happens

On site, the merchandise pavilion, the spectator village and the grandstands around the closing holes are the public gathering points; at Frisco in 2027 the resort's restaurants and the campus's second course will add to that considerably.

07Getting there

Commercial aviationFor 2027, Dallas-Fort Worth International is about thirty-five minutes from PGA Frisco and Dallas Love Field about forty; both are major hubs.

RailNone useful at the 2027 venue; the Dallas light-rail network does not reach Frisco, and most PGA Championship venues are suburban.

CarA car is required. The association runs park-and-ride sites with shuttles and closes local roads; at Frisco the Dallas North Tollway is the approach.

Private aviationMcKinney National is the closest field to PGA Frisco, with Addison, Dallas Executive and Fort Worth Meacham as alternatives.

HelicopterCharter operates within the Dallas area, but there is no landing at the venue and no published shuttle.

08Practicalities

DressGolf clothing, and for a Texas May, the lightest version of it: breathable fabrics, a hat and sunglasses are not optional, and an afternoon on an exposed new course at Frisco is genuinely punishing.

WeatherConditions depend on the venue.

Getting aroundUse the official park-and-ride; the courses themselves have no spectator parking.

HotelsThe championship does not strain a metropolitan hotel market the way it strains a small town, so rooms remain available at reasonable notice, though the properties nearest the course and the on-site resort at Frisco go early and price accordingly.

RestaurantsSuburban dining near the venue is functional rather than interesting; the good tables are in the host city and take reservations on their normal cycle.

09History

The championship was founded in 1916 with funding from the Philadelphia department store owner Rodman Wanamaker, whose name is on the trophy, and was played as match play for its first forty-two years. Walter Hagen won five of those match-play titles.
