The Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance is a one-day judged exhibition of significant motor cars staged on the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links, with Carmel Bay behind the field. Roughly two hundred cars are accepted each year, arranged in classes by marque, era and body style, and assessed by invited judges on originality, authenticity of restoration and, in the organizer's language, elegance. Class winners are brought forward in the afternoon for the Best of Show award, which is announced from a ramp at the top of the lawn. The Pebble Beach Company runs the event and directs its proceeds to local charities; the organizer states that cumulative giving has passed twenty-three million dollars.

The day has a fixed shape. Cars are driven onto the fairway before dawn in the dark, an arrival that the public can watch and that many regulars treat as the best hour of the week. Judging occupies the morning, the field opens to ticket holders, and the awards ramp runs through the afternoon until Best of Show. Around the competition classes sit a Concept Lawn of manufacturer prototypes, a small commercial village, and the Pebble Beach Classic Car Forum, a talks program held in the days beforehand. Entry is by application and invitation; a car that has already shown at Pebble Beach is generally not eligible again for a long period, which is why the field changes materially from year to year.

The Concours does not stand alone. It is the last day of a ten-day sequence across the Monterey Peninsula that includes the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Laguna Seca, The Quail in Carmel Valley, Concorso Italiano, and the major collector-car auctions. Anyone attending the Sunday will find the whole peninsula running at car-week intensity, and the Concours ticket is only one line in a week that most attendees build around several events.

01Por que importa

Pebble Beach is the reference point by which other concours are measured. A Best of Show here changes a car's provenance and, in the trade's plain reading, its value; restoration shops build multi-year programs around a single August Sunday, and the judging standards set at Pebble Beach propagate outward to Villa d'Este, Amelia Island and Salon Prive. The event also functions as the anchor of the largest collector-car market week in the world: the auctions, the dealer displays and the manufacturer reveals all schedule themselves around it, and in strong years the auction total for the week has run into the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Its second role is commercial. Manufacturers use the Concept Lawn and the surrounding week to show low-volume and limited-series cars to the specific audience most likely to buy them, which is why the peninsula in mid-August carries more new-model reveals than most motor shows. In our reading, that combination — a scholarly competition, a market week and a manufacturer showcase occupying the same coastline on the same weekend — is what keeps Pebble Beach at the top of the automotive calendar rather than the quality of the lawn itself.

02A semana ao seu redor

By the Wednesday before the Concours the Monterey Peninsula has changed character. Highway 1 between Monterey and Carmel slows to a crawl at commuting hours, Ocean Avenue in Carmel-by-the-Sea fills with parked collector cars that people photograph freely, and hotel rates across the peninsula sit at their annual peak. The auction previews at the Monterey Conference Center and along Cannery Row are open to ticket holders and are the easiest way for a visitor to stand next to significant cars at no great cost. Laguna Seca runs historic racing from the Thursday, and Carmel Valley Road carries a steady stream of traffic to The Quail on the Friday.

The Concours itself pulls roughly fifteen thousand spectators onto a golf course, which is the density the day is designed around. The 17-Mile Drive gate at Pebble Beach becomes the controlling bottleneck on Sunday morning; the organizer runs shuttles from off-site parking and most people use them. Saturday evening in Carmel and Monterey is the week's social peak in public places, because Sunday starts before four in the morning for anyone who wants to see the cars arrive.

03Quando chegar

Arrive Wednesday or Thursday if the week matters to you and Saturday if only the Concours does. Thursday gives you the Tour d'Elegance, in which the entered cars are driven on public roads down the coast and through Carmel — the single best free spectacle of the week, watched from the sidewalk. Friday is The Quail and the heaviest auction previews; Saturday is Laguna Seca and the Concours d'Lemons in Seaside. Leave Monday morning rather than Sunday evening: the peninsula empties badly on Sunday night and the airport at Monterey is small.

04Onde se hospedar

There are three practical bases. Pebble Beach itself, inside the 17-Mile Drive gate, puts you within walking or short-shuttle distance of the fairway; The Lodge at Pebble Beach and The Inn at Spanish Bay are the landmarks here, and they sell out furthest ahead. Carmel-by-the-Sea is the most pleasant place to sleep and eat during the week, a mile of walkable village with restaurants that stay busy until late, and it is a fifteen-minute drive from the gate outside peak hours. Monterey and Seaside are cheaper, closer to the auctions and Laguna Seca, and further from the Sunday.

The trade-off is traffic, not distance. Anywhere off the peninsula — Salinas, Marina, Santa Cruz, even Carmel Valley — is affordable and viable if you accept that Sunday morning access to Pebble Beach means leaving very early. Many regulars take houses in Carmel Valley or Pacific Grove for the full week rather than hotel rooms.

05Acesso e hospitalidade

The Concours is ticketed and the organizer sells to the public. General admission gives access to the show field and the Concept Lawn; the organizer also sells reserved hospitality including the Club d'Elegance, which carries seating and food service near the awards ramp, and packages that bundle other events in the week. Tickets are sold through the organizer's own store rather than at the gate on the day, and the field is open to ticket holders from mid-morning. The Tour d'Elegance on the Thursday requires no ticket at all if you watch from a public road.

Entering a car is a different proposition: entries are by application, reviewed by a selection committee, and a car that has previously been shown is normally excluded for a long interval. Judging accreditation is by invitation. We have not confirmed current published prices for any ticket tier and have deliberately not quoted any.

06Onde ocorre a actividade social

The public center of the week is Carmel-by-the-Sea: Ocean Avenue and the side streets, the hotel bars and courtyard restaurants, and the Carmel Mission Classic on the Wednesday. Monterey's Cannery Row and the Portola Hotel area carry the auction crowd, and the auction previews themselves are the most sociable rooms on the peninsula because everyone circulates. At Pebble Beach the Lodge terrace above the 18th green is the traditional gathering point, and the Concours Village on the fairway edge is where most of the day's conversation happens. Laguna Seca's paddock is open to ticket holders and is unusually accessible for a race meeting.

07Como chegar

Aviação comercialMonterey Regional Airport (MRY) is ten minutes from Carmel and carries limited regional service that fills months ahead in car-week. Most visitors fly into San Jose (SJC), roughly seventy-five minutes away, or San Francisco (SFO), roughly two hours and longer on the Sunday.
ComboioThere is no rail service to the Monterey Peninsula. Amtrak's Coast Starlight and the Capitol Corridor reach Salinas, about twenty-five minutes inland, with a bus connection to Monterey.
AutomóvelA car is close to essential, and the week is planned around driving. Highway 1 south from Santa Cruz and Highway 68 from Salinas are the two approaches; both are congested from Thursday. Parking inside 17-Mile Drive on Concours Sunday is heavily restricted and the organizer directs ticket holders to shuttles.
Aviação privadaMonterey Regional Airport handles business aviation with FBO service and is the standard arrival point for the week; slot and parking pressure in car-week is severe and handlers ask for arrangements well in advance. San Jose and Salinas Municipal absorb the overflow.
HelicópteroHelicopter transfers from the Bay Area operate during car week; there is no public helipad at Pebble Beach itself and landings in the Del Monte Forest are constrained.
MarinasMonterey Harbor has a small marina and moorings; it is not a superyacht destination and the harbor plays no meaningful part in the week.

08Aspectos práticos

TrajeThe show field is a golf course in coastal fog. Men wear jackets, often with a hat, and the tradition of pale linen and panamas is real but not required; women wear day dresses and, sensibly, flat shoes. Layers matter more than tailoring: the morning is cold and grey and the afternoon can be bright. Grass and heels do not work.
ClimaMid-August on the Monterey Peninsula is cool and frequently overcast. A marine layer usually sits over the coast in the morning and burns off some time between late morning and mid-afternoon, or not at all; daytime temperatures are mild rather than warm and evenings are cold by California standards. Rain in August is rare. We have not sourced station-level normals for this record.
Deslocação e transportePlan around the 17-Mile Drive gates and the single coastal highway. Ride-hailing works but surges and struggles inside the Del Monte Forest; the organizer's shuttles from off-site lots are the reliable way onto the fairway on Sunday. Rental cars for the week should be booked months ahead and are frequently sold out on the peninsula.
HotéisCar week is the peninsula's highest-demand period of the year. Pebble Beach Company properties and the better Carmel hotels take bookings a year out and impose multi-night minimums; regulars rebook for the following August as they check out. Rooms released late are usually in Monterey, Seaside or Marina rather than Carmel or Pebble Beach.
RestaurantesCarmel and Monterey have enough restaurants for a normal August and not for this one. Tables at the better Carmel rooms go weeks ahead for the Friday and Saturday, and walk-in dining after eight is difficult. Lunch is easier than dinner all week, and Pacific Grove and Carmel Valley absorb the overflow.
Prazo para reservasHotels: six to twelve months, and longer inside Pebble Beach. Restaurants: four to eight weeks for the Friday and Saturday. Concours tickets and hospitality generally go on sale in the spring for the following August, with the reserved tiers selling out first.
IngressosThe organizer sells general admission and reserved hospitality through its own ticket store, with sales opening well before the event and hospitality tiers closing early. General admission covers the show field and Concept Lawn. Separate tickets are required for the auctions, Laguna Seca and The Quail, each sold by its own organizer. The Tour d'Elegance is free to watch from public roads.
HospitalidadeThe organizer lists reserved hospitality including the Club d'Elegance, with seating, catering and a position near the awards ramp, alongside packages that combine the Concours with other week events. Sponsoring brands and the auction houses run their own hospitality and preview programs, sold or invited separately. We did not find published prices at the time of writing and have not estimated any.

09Histórico

The Concours began on 4 November 1950 as a companion to the Pebble Beach Road Race, a sports-car race run through the Del Monte Forest. Thirty cars appeared at the first showing. In 1952 the display moved to the 18th green of the golf links, where it has stayed; the road race itself was moved to the new Laguna Seca circuit in 1957 after a fatality, and the Concours survived the separation. It has been staged every year since 1950 with a single omission in 1960, caused by a scheduling conflict.

The character of the event changed twice. Through the 1950s and 1960s it was a local society show with a strong local entry list. From the 1970s onward, as European coachbuilt cars became internationally collectible, the entry became global and the judging steadily more forensic, rewarding originality over cosmetic perfection. J.B. Nethercutt's six Best of Show wins date from that period. More recently the organizer has widened the classes deliberately, admitting postwar Japanese cars, preservation classes and unrestored survivors alongside the prewar coachwork that Bugatti and Mercedes-Benz have used to accumulate ten Best of Show titles apiece. The 2026 edition, the seventy-fifth, was announced as the last under chairman Sandra Button, whose tenure covered most of that broadening.

10Quem está presente

Collectors and their families, restoration shops and marque specialists, auction house staff and consignors, dealers and brokers, manufacturer executives and design teams showing concepts, motoring journalists, and a large local and regional public that comes for the cars. The judging corps is drawn from historians, marque registrars and former entrants. The Sunday audience is broader and older than the Friday and Saturday events, and includes many people attending as a once-in-a-lifetime trip rather than as part of a circuit.
