The world's largest photography fair, four November days under the Grand Palais glass roof, with a citywide photography season around it.

Paris Photo is the only fair in the world where the photographic trade gathers at scale, and it has held that position for nearly thirty years. It fills the Grand Palais for four days in November with galleries, publishers and dealers covering the whole medium: nineteenth-century processes, mid-century reportage, fashion and studio work, contemporary conceptual photography and, increasingly, work made with digital and generative tools. The fair is organized as a main gallery sector with smaller curated strands: a section for younger galleries, a books and publishers area that is one of the most heavily used parts of the fair, a digital sector, and thematic itineraries through the halls. Prizes for photobooks and individual projects are awarded during the run. Admission runs from one in the afternoon until eight, which leaves the mornings free for the city's exhibitions.
01Warum es relevant ist
Photography's market is smaller and more specialized than the art market generally, and it has one annual meeting point rather than several. Paris Photo is that point: the fair where the medium's dealers, curators, publishers, collectors and prize juries are in one room, and where a photobook or a young photographer's first showing can change a career.
Our reading is that its move back into the restored Grand Palais gave it a second life. The temporary venues it used during the renovation diminished it, and a glass-roofed hall built for spectacle suits a medium that is often shown small and badly.
02Die Woche darum
November is Paris's photography month and the fair is the centre of it rather than the whole. Polycopies, the photobook event held on a barge moored on the Seine, is the week's most enjoyable fixture and is free; Approche and Offprint at the Beaux-Arts cover the medium's edges, and Photo Saint-Germain runs a festival of exhibitions across the Left Bank through the month. The institutions program to it: the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in the Marais, the Jeu de Paume, the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson and the Bibliothèque nationale de France all schedule photography exhibitions into November, and the Paris auction houses hold photography sales with free previews. Paris in November is low season, so the week raises rates from a modest base.
03Anreisezeitpunkt
Wednesday evening or Thursday morning. Because the fair opens at one in the afternoon, the sensible pattern is museums and Left Bank galleries in the morning and the Grand Palais from mid-afternoon into the evening. Two days covers the fair and Polycopies properly; a third opens up the Marais and Saint-Germain exhibitions.
04Unterkunft
Saint-Germain in the 6th is the right base for this fair specifically, because Photo Saint-Germain and most of the photographic bookshops and galleries are there, and the walk across the river takes twenty-five minutes. The 8th around the Champs-Élysées is closest to the fair and the most expensive. The Marais puts the Maison Européenne de la Photographie at the door. November availability in Paris is the best of any month in this batch.
05Zugang und Hospitality
Tickets are sold on the fair's website and at the Grand Palais, with published opening hours of 1pm to 8pm and 7pm on the Sunday. The organizer publishes prices each year and they are not reproduced here. A vernissage precedes the public run on the fair's usual pattern, by invitation rather than sold. The talks and signing programme is included with admission, and the book sector's signings, where photographers sign at publishers' stands, are the most accessible thing at the fair. Polycopies on the Seine is free and open to anyone.
06Wo das gesellschaftliche Geschehen stattfindet
The Grand Palais nave is the daytime meeting place, and because the fair opens late the transition from fair to dinner is immediate rather than staged. The book sector's signing tables are where most of the week's conversations start. In the evening the movement is across the river to Saint-Germain, where the galleries and bookshops around the Rue de Seine and the Rue Mazarine hold openings. The Polycopies barge, moored within walking distance of the fair, is the reliable open-door gathering of the week.

09Geschichte
Paris Photo was founded in 1997 at the Carrousel du Louvre and moved to the Grand Palais in 2011, where it grew into the medium's dominant fair. It ran a Los Angeles edition at Paramount Studios from 2013 to 2017, which closed. During the Grand Palais restoration it used the Grand Palais Éphémère on the Champ de Mars, returning once the building reopened. The fair is owned by RX France, which distinguishes it from the dealer-founded and gallery-owned fairs elsewhere on this circuit.
10Wer ist dort
Photography collectors, who are a distinct and more specialized group than the general art market's; curators from photography departments and dedicated institutions across Europe and North America; publishers, printers and book dealers, in unusual numbers because of the book sector; photographers themselves, who attend this fair more than any other; prize juries; and a large Parisian public, since photography is the most publicly accessible of the collecting fields.
