Ngày · 15th festival Dự kiếnNot yet announced. The festival's pattern is a week in the middle of May running Thursday to Wednesday, with ICFF taking the Sunday, Monday and Tuesday inside it at the Javits Center. The 2026 edition ran May 14–20; the equivalent 2027 window is May 13–19. Note that this places the festival inside the same fortnight as New York's spring marquee auctions and the May art fairs, which is a deliberate feature of the New York calendar rather than a coincidence. Confirmation usually comes in the winter.

NYCxDESIGN was set up in 2013 to give New York the sort of coordinated design week that Milan and London already had, in a city whose design industry is spread across five boroughs and a dozen unrelated trades. It is now run by an independent nonprofit and works by federation rather than by ownership: showrooms, studios, schools, galleries and museums put their own events into a common calendar for a week in the middle of May, and the festival publishes the map.

The trade spine is ICFF, the International Contemporary Furniture Fair, which occupies the Javits Center on the far West Side for three days inside the festival week — May 17–19 in 2026, with more than four hundred exhibiting brands. Around it, the design districts do the work: the showrooms of the A&D Building and the Fifty-Eighth Street corridor, the furniture and lighting galleries of SoHo and NoHo, the Flatiron and NoMad blocks, and the Brooklyn studios in Greenpoint, Gowanus and Industry City, which have become the most interesting part of the week.

Most of the city programme is free and open to anyone. That is the essential difference between New York's design week and Milan's: there is no single spectacle, no queue for a courtyard installation, and correspondingly less pressure. There is instead a very large number of small openings, which rewards planning and punishes wandering.

01Lý do quan trọng

New York is the largest market for design services in the United States and the week is when its industry is visible to itself. For manufacturers and importers, ICFF is the principal North American selling fair; for the studios and galleries, the festival week is when the specifiers, buyers and press who are otherwise scattered across the city all move in the same direction. In our reading its significance is more commercial than cultural: New York does not produce the public spectacle that Milan and London do, but it produces orders, and the week's real business happens on the Javits floor and in the showrooms rather than in the installations.

02Tuần lễ xung quanh sự kiện

May in New York is the city's most crowded cultural month and the design festival shares it with a great deal else. The spring marquee auctions at Christie's, Sotheby's and Phillips fall in exactly the same fortnight, as do Frieze New York and TEFAF New York; the Met Gala has opened the month; and the museums are between spring and summer programmes. Design visitors and art visitors overlap less than the calendar suggests, but the hotels do not care about the distinction, and the middle two weeks of May are the tightest of the New York spring.

03Thời điểm đến

Arrive Thursday or Friday for the festival's opening weekend, when the showroom and studio programmes are complete and the Brooklyn events are concentrated. ICFF's Sunday-to-Tuesday run means anyone coming for the fair needs to be in town over the weekend. Four nights from Friday covers both sides properly; a Monday-to-Wednesday trip catches the trade fair and misses most of the city.

04Nơi lưu trú

Downtown — SoHo, NoHo, Tribeca — puts you closest to the gallery and studio end of the week and within reach of Brooklyn on the L and the G. Chelsea and Hudson Yards put you within walking distance of the Javits Center, which matters on ICFF days because the far West Side is poorly served by anything else. Midtown East around the A&D Building suits anyone whose week is showrooms rather than studios. Brooklyn itself — Williamsburg, Greenpoint — is a real option and increasingly where the design trade stays.

05Tiếp cận và tiếp đón

The city programme is overwhelmingly free and unticketed: showroom openings, studio visits, talks and exhibitions are listed on the festival's calendar and most require nothing more than turning up, though a number ask for free registration and fill. ICFF is a separate ticketed trade fair with its own admission, registration and trade credentials, sold through its own site. Museums and institutions charge their usual entry. The festival publishes no hospitality tier and sells no VIP access.

06Nơi diễn ra các hoạt động giao lưu

The showroom blocks of Midtown East around 58th Street and the A&D Building in the daytime; SoHo and NoHo in the late afternoon, where the furniture and lighting galleries cluster within a few blocks; and Brooklyn in the evenings, where Greenpoint, Gowanus and Industry City hold the openings that the younger end of the trade actually attends. The Javits Center's own bars and the Hudson Yards restaurants absorb the fair crowd. Everything here is public and most of it is free.

07Hướng dẫn di chuyển

Hàng không thương mạiJohn F. Kennedy (JFK) and Newark Liberty (EWR) for long-haul, LaGuardia (LGA) for domestic. Newark is the closest to the Javits Center and to the West Side hotels.
Đường sắtAmtrak into Moynihan Train Hall at Penn Station, which is about fifteen minutes on foot or one stop on the 7 train from the Javits Center. Metro-North into Grand Central for the Midtown East showrooms.
Xe hơiUnhelpful. Congestion pricing applies below 60th Street, parking near the Javits is expensive, and the subway and a willingness to walk cover the whole week.
hàng không tư nhânTeterboro (TEB) is the closest business-aviation field to the West Side; Westchester County (HPN) and Republic (FRG) are the alternatives.
Trực thăngScheduled and charter services operate from the Downtown Manhattan and East 34th Street heliports to the regional airports.

08Thông tin thực tiễn

Trang phụcNothing is expected. The New York design trade dresses in the city's usual dark, practical register, and the Brooklyn end of the week is more casual again. May weather asks for a light jacket in the evening and shoes that handle a great deal of walking.
Thời tiếtReliable late spring. NOAA's 1991–2020 normals for Central Park give May a mean daily high of 21.9°C (71.4°F) and a mean low of 12.8°C (55.0°F), with about 101 mm of rain across the month. It is New York's best month for walking between neighborhoods, which is what this week requires.
Di chuyển trong khu vựcThe festival is spread across Manhattan and Brooklyn and the subway is the only sensible way to cover it: allow thirty to forty-five minutes between districts. The Javits Center is served by the 7 train at Hudson Yards, which is the reliable way in on fair days; taxis to the far West Side are slow at the hours the fair opens and closes. The L and G trains cover the Brooklyn studio districts; weekend service changes are common and worth checking.
Khách sạnMid-May is one of New York's peak periods and the design week coincides with the auctions, the art fairs and the start of the graduation season. Supply is large enough that rooms are always findable, but rates sit near the annual high and the downtown and West Side hotels closest to the week's centers fill first. Six weeks ahead is comfortable.
Nhà hàngNo festival-driven pressure of the kind Milan or Beaune produce, but mid-May is a busy month in a busy restaurant city. Around the Javits Center the options thin out quickly; Hudson Yards and Hell's Kitchen are the practical answers on fair days. Downtown and Brooklyn take bookings at a week or two's notice for most things.
Thời điểm đặt chỗHotels four to six weeks ahead. Restaurants one to two weeks. ICFF registration should be completed online before travelling, particularly for trade admission, which requires credentials. Free city-programme events that require registration open a few weeks ahead and the popular ones fill within days.
VéThe NYCxDESIGN city programme is free; individual events publish their own registration requirements on the festival calendar and a good many require none at all. ICFF sells its own admission separately, with trade and general tiers and advance online registration; prices were not verified for this record. Museums and design institutions charge normal admission.
Tiếp đónThe festival sells no hospitality and operates no VIP tier. Showroom receptions, brand launches and studio openings are hosted by the participating businesses themselves and the large majority are open to anyone who registers on the festival calendar. ICFF runs its own opening and awards programme for exhibitors and registered trade visitors. There is no ticketed inner circle to this week, which is one of its better features.

09Lịch sử

The festival began in 2013 as a city-backed initiative to consolidate a design week around ICFF, which had run in New York since the mid-1990s and was for years the only fixture the American design trade organized itself around. Governance moved to an independent nonprofit at the start of the 2020s. Two shifts have shaped it since: the growth of Brooklyn's studio and fabrication scene, which moved the week's center of gravity across the East River, and the consolidation of ICFF with the smaller WantedDesign platform, which brought the emerging-designer end of the week under the same roof at the Javits.

10Ai có mặt ở đây

Interior designers, architects and specifiers, who make up the bulk of ICFF's floor; furniture and lighting manufacturers and their American representatives; retail and hospitality buyers; independent studios and fabricators, particularly from Brooklyn; design schools and their students, in large numbers; and a broad general public for the free city programme. Less international than Milan or London and more regional than either.
