Ten days in May when Christie's, Sotheby's and Phillips stage their largest modern and contemporary evening sales blocks apart.

The New York spring marquee auctions are not one event but three that share a calendar. Christie's sells at 20 Rockefeller Plaza, Sotheby's at 945 Madison Avenue in the Marcel Breuer building it opened as its headquarters in 2025, and Phillips at 432 Park Avenue. Each publishes its own schedule; what the trade calls marquee week is the informal agreement that nobody puts a headline evening sale against anyone else's.
The shape of the fortnight is consistent. Free public previews open first and run for about two weeks — Sotheby's listed its 2026 exhibitions from May 2 to May 18 — and they are the part most visitors actually attend: floors of paintings and sculpture that in many cases have not been shown publicly for decades and will not be shown again. The evening sales then arrive in a tight sequence, each lasting an hour or two, with day sales the following mornings clearing the rest of the same collections.
What makes the week legible from outside is that estimates are published in advance and results within minutes of the hammer. Christie's 20th Century Evening Sale on May 18, 2026 totaled $490.3 million, according to reporting by HENI; that figure and the ones around it are what the trade will argue about for the rest of the year.
An evening sale itself is short and highly formal. Fifty or sixty lots are offered in a published order, the estimates having been printed weeks earlier; an auctioneer works from a rostrum against a bank of specialists on telephones, each taking bids from a client somewhere else, and the whole thing is over in ninety minutes. Almost nothing is decided in the room. What the room provides is the record: the hammer falls, the number appears, and it becomes the reference point for every conversation about that artist for the next year.
01यह क्यों महत्वपूर्ण है
May in New York is where the public price of art gets set. Two of the three houses are more than two centuries old and both do a large share of their annual business in this fortnight; the sales are the most complete published record the market produces. The concentration of people matters as much as the money — museum trustees, advisers, dealers and the specialists who service them are all in the same forty blocks for ten days. In our reading, the week's real value to an ordinary visitor is the opposite of its reputation: the previews are among the best free exhibitions in New York in any year, and nobody checks who you are at the door. The day sales that follow deserve more attention than they get. They are where the market's actual breadth is visible — the works below a million dollars, sold in quantity, that tell you whether demand is broad or concentrated in a handful of names.
02इसके आसपास का सप्ताह
Two fairs bracket the sales. TEFAF New York and Frieze New York both run in May, and collectors in town for one routinely stay for the others; the Met Gala, on the first Monday of May, opens the month. Madison Avenue and the Upper East Side galleries hang their strongest shows against the previews, and the Chelsea and Tribeca dealers schedule openings to catch people who have flown in. Nothing closes: this is a city of nine million absorbing a few thousand visitors, and the week is invisible unless you are looking for it. The Met's Costume Institute exhibition, which opens after the Gala, runs through the fortnight and draws its own queue; the Frick, the Whitney and the Guggenheim are all within a short walk of the Madison Avenue saleroom. For a visitor with no interest in bidding, the first ten days of May in New York are simply the densest run of free and ticketed exhibitions the city offers in any month.
03कब पहुँचें
Arrive by the Tuesday of the first evening-sale week if you intend to see the previews properly; the exhibitions are fullest and quietest in the first half of the fortnight. If you are coming only for the sales, the useful window is the Wednesday through the following Wednesday, which in 2026 covered both Sotheby's evening sales and Christie's. Leaving on the Thursday after gives you the day sales, which are less crowded and more instructive about the market's actual depth.
04कहाँ ठहरें
The geography has two poles. The Upper East Side above 65th Street puts you within a walk of Sotheby's and of the gallery blocks that matter this week; the Carlyle and the Mark are the landmarks people navigate by, and the neighborhood empties in the evening. Midtown around Fifth Avenue is closer to Christie's and to Phillips, better connected downtown, and noisier. SoHo and Tribeca suit anyone for whom the galleries matter more than a short walk to a saleroom; the subway makes it workable, the taxi at six o'clock does not.
05पहुँच एवं आतिथ्य
The previews are free, open to the public and need no appointment; anyone can walk into all three houses during exhibition hours. The evening sales are different. Seats in the main room are allocated by the houses to registered bidders, consignors and clients and are limited by the size of the room; overflow rooms carry a live relay, and all three stream the sales publicly online, which is how most people follow them. Registering to bid requires identification and financial references filed several days ahead. Day sales are considerably easier to attend. None of the houses publishes a hospitality programme; the entertaining around the sales is private, and we do not describe it.
06सामाजिक गतिविधि कहाँ होती है
The public week clusters in three places. Madison Avenue in the sixties and seventies, where the galleries, the Sotheby's building and a short row of long-standing restaurants carry the daytime traffic. Rockefeller Center and the blocks around it, which absorb the Christie's crowd at lunch and after the evening sales. And Chelsea and Tribeca, where openings are timed to the week and anyone may walk in. The Frick, the Met and the Whitney all run their spring programmes against the same fortnight.

09इतिहास
Sotheby's dates from 1744 and Christie's from 1766, both London firms; Christie's opened its first American branch in New York in 1977 and took its Rockefeller Center space two decades later. New York's rise to the center of the modern and contemporary market was a postwar development, consolidated through the 1970s and 1980s as American collections built after the war came back to market. More recently the houses compressed what had been three sprawling weeks into a tighter window, partly to concentrate travel and partly because a single-owner collection, sold whole and named for its owner, now carries a season. Sotheby's move from York Avenue to the Breuer building in 2025 put its salerooms back into the gallery district. The catalogues themselves are worth noting as artifacts: printed months ahead, distributed free at the door, and researched to a standard that libraries collect. They are the most detailed public record of privately owned art that exists, and they are produced twice a year whether or not anyone buys.
10वहाँ कौन है
Collectors and their advisers, dealers from New York, London, Paris, Hong Kong and Seoul, museum directors and acquisition committees, auction specialists, art lawyers and lenders, and the financial press. Around them a larger group comes for the previews and the fairs rather than the bidding. The bidding itself is increasingly done by telephone and online, so the people in the room are not necessarily the people buying.

| 2027 | अपेक्षितNot yet announced. The spring marquee week has an unusually stable pattern: the houses stage their modern and contemporary evening sales across the second and third weeks of May, with previews opening about a fortnight earlier, and they avoid scheduling two headline evening sales against each other. In 2026 the sequence ran May 14 to May 20; a comparable 2027 window would fall in the second week of May and the days immediately after. Christie's, Sotheby's and Phillips normally publish exact dates two to four months ahead, alongside their first consigned highlights. | |
| 2026 | पूर्णAnchor dates verified from the houses' own listings. Sotheby's published its New York sales series at 945 Madison Avenue with exhibitions running May 2 to May 18, the Robert Mnuchin: Collector at Heart and The Now & Contemporary evening auctions on May 14, the Contemporary Day auction on May 15, the Modern Evening auction on May 19 and the Modern Day auction on May 20. Christie's held its 20th Century Evening Sale in New York on May 18. Christie's own calendar could not be retrieved directly, and Phillips's New York evening sale date for 2026 was not confirmed, so the closing date given here is the last sale we could verify rather than the last sale of the week. |
