The autumn half of New York's auction year: a November fortnight when the largest single-owner collections come to market at all three houses.

Datas ConfirmadoSotheby's publishes the autumn edition of The New York Sales as running November 9 to 20, 2026 at 945 Madison Avenue; the individual evening and day sale times within that window are released closer to the date. Christie's dates for its November 2026 New York sales could not be retrieved from christies.com, which our tooling cannot reach; historically Christie's schedules its 20th and 21st Century evening sales inside the same fortnight and does not run them against Sotheby's. Phillips had not published its November 2026 New York dates in a form we could read. PrevistoNot yet announced. The autumn marquee week is one of the most stable fixtures on the international calendar: it falls in the second and third weeks of November, after the American election-day and Veterans Day markers and before the Thanksgiving week that closes New York's autumn, and it is deliberately spaced about six months from the May sales. The 2026 window ran November 9 to 20; the equivalent 2027 dates are estimated on the same weekday pattern. The houses normally confirm two to four months ahead.

November is the heavier of New York's two auction seasons. Estates settled over the summer come to market in the autumn, and the single-owner collection — sold whole, catalogued as a life rather than a list of lots — is a November phenomenon far more than a May one. Christie's sold the Paul Allen collection in November 2022 for a total the house reported above $1.5 billion, and it was in a November sale, in 2017, that Leonardo's Salvator Mundi made $450.3 million.

The mechanics match the spring and the geography is identical: Christie's at Rockefeller Center, Sotheby's in the Breuer building on Madison Avenue, Phillips on Park. Sotheby's has published its autumn 2026 series as running November 9 to 20. Free public exhibitions open first and stay up for a week or more; the evening sales follow in a compressed sequence; day sales clear the rest.

What is different is the mood and the light. The city sits between seasons, the summer traffic has gone and the December holidays have not arrived, and the week belongs more completely to the trade than May's does. There is no fair of Frieze New York's size to dilute it, which concentrates attention on the salerooms themselves.

The single-owner sale is the format that defines the season, and it changes how the week is presented. A collection sold whole gets its own catalogue, its own exhibition floor and often its own evening, and the house will have spent months arguing for the privilege against its competitors. For the visitor this is the best possible version of an auction preview: a private collection, hung as it was lived with, open free of charge for a week, and then dispersed permanently.

01Por que importa

The November sales close the art market's year, and their totals are the numbers quoted for the next twelve months in valuations, insurance schedules and estate planning. For anyone who owns or advises on significant property, the autumn week is where the market's appetite for a particular artist, decade or scale of picture is tested in public. It also matters because of what the houses must assemble to make it work: a November marquee sale represents a year of negotiation with families, executors and foundations, and the collections that result are briefly the best exhibitions in the city. Our view is that November is the more revealing of the two weeks — May sells the market's confidence, November sells what has actually become available. There is a second reason to watch the autumn: the houses compete for these collections, and the terms they offer to win them — guarantees, advances, reduced commission — set the economics of the whole business. The results in November are the only public evidence of whether those terms were sensible.

02A semana ao seu redor

November has no fair to rival Frieze New York in May, which is part of the week's character: the salerooms are the main event and the galleries schedule around them. Madison Avenue and the Upper East Side dealers open their strongest autumn shows against the previews, and Chelsea and Tribeca do the same a few days earlier. The Salon Art + Design at the Park Avenue Armory sits nearby on the calendar in some years. Beyond the art world nothing changes: the marathon has passed, Thanksgiving is two weeks off, and hotel demand is at one of its lower points of the year. For visitors, the practical consequence is that November is the best month of the year to see New York's art without either the May crowds or the December prices. The exhibitions are the same quality; the city is emptier and cheaper.

03Quando chegar

Come in on the Sunday or Monday at the start of the fortnight. The exhibitions are complete and calm early, and the first days are when it is genuinely possible to spend an hour with a picture. If you are following results rather than objects, the useful stretch is the middle of the week, when the largest evening sales fall on consecutive nights. Staying through the day sales is worth doing if you want the market's depth rather than its headline.

04Onde se hospedar

The Upper East Side above 65th Street is the practical choice in November, both because Sotheby's and the Madison Avenue galleries are within a walk and because the neighborhood is at its best in cold weather; the Carlyle, the Mark and the Lowell are the landmarks. Midtown around Fifth Avenue suits anyone splitting time between Christie's and meetings elsewhere, at the cost of the tree-lighting crowds that build at month's end. Downtown is a real option this week specifically: rates are lower than in May and the gallery districts are closer.

05Acesso e hospitalidade

As in May, the public exhibitions at all three houses are free, unticketed and open during published hours, and they are the substantial part of the week for a visitor without a bidding relationship. Seats in the evening sale rooms are allocated by the houses to registered bidders, consignors and clients; they are not sold, and the rooms are small. Overflow rooms carry a live relay, and each house streams its evening sales publicly. Registering to bid requires identification and references filed in advance. Day sales are open in practice. The houses publish no hospitality programme.

06Onde ocorre a actividade social

The public geography is narrow. Madison Avenue between 60th and 80th carries the daytime traffic — Sotheby's, the dealers, a handful of hotel bars and restaurants that fill after nine on evening-sale nights. Around Rockefeller Center, the midtown grills take the Christie's crowd. Downtown, Tribeca and the Lower East Side hold the openings and the younger end of the trade. The Frick, the Met and the Morgan run their autumn exhibitions through the same fortnight.

07Como chegar

Aviação comercialJFK and Newark (EWR) for long-haul, LaGuardia (LGA) for domestic. November is an easier month to fly into New York than May or December, with the exception of the Thanksgiving surge that begins after the sales finish.
ComboioAmtrak on the Northeast Corridor into Moynihan Train Hall; Metro-North into Grand Central, a short walk from Rockefeller Center. The Acela from Washington or Boston is competitive with flying door to door.
AutomóvelNot worth it. Congestion pricing applies below 60th Street, covering Christie's and Phillips but not Sotheby's, and street parking near any of the three is unavailable on sale days.
Aviação privadaTeterboro (TEB) is closest to midtown; Westchester County (HPN) and Republic (FRG) are the alternatives. Demand rises sharply in the week before Thanksgiving rather than during the sales.
HelicópteroThe Downtown Manhattan and East 34th Street heliports handle scheduled and on-demand services to the regional airports. November weather cancels more flights than May does.

08Aspectos práticos

TrajeBusiness dress for the evening sales, overcoat weather outside them. The exhibitions have no dress code and people arrive in whatever November requires. Gallery openings run casual; the dinners around them do not, but those are private.
ClimaCold and generally clear. NOAA's 1991–2020 normals for Central Park give November a mean daily high of 12.2°C (54.0°F) and a mean low of 5.6°C (42.0°F), with about 91 mm of precipitation — the driest of the four months that carry New York's cultural calendar. Daylight is short by mid-month and the evening sales begin after dark.
Deslocação e transporteThe three salerooms sit within two miles of one another; Rockefeller Center to Madison in the seventies is about half an hour on foot and pleasant in November. The 4, 5, 6 and Q lines beat a car at almost any hour. Evening sales finish between eight and nine, when midtown traffic is at its worst.
HotéisNovember before Thanksgiving is one of New York's softer stretches, and the auction fortnight does not move the market in a city this size. Rooms on the Upper East Side within walking distance of Madison Avenue are the exception, because supply there is small. Rates through the sale weeks sit well below the May and December peaks.
RestaurantesThe Upper East Side rooms the trade has used for decades take a wave of late bookings on evening-sale nights, when the saleroom empties at nine and everyone walks to dinner at once. Midtown near Rockefeller Center is easier. Reserve three weeks out for the largest sales, a week for anything else; lunch is straightforward.
Prazo para reservasFour to six weeks ahead is comfortable outside the Upper East Side, six to eight for the small hotels near Madison. Tables on evening-sale nights go about three weeks out. Bidder registration should be filed a week or more before the sale, and considerably earlier for a first-time buyer.
IngressosNo ticket exists and none is sold. Public exhibitions are free and open during published hours for the week or more before each sale. Access to the evening sale room follows from bidder registration or a client relationship and cannot be bought. All three houses stream their evening sales free and publish results immediately after the hammer, including the buyer's premium, which is where reported totals come from.
HospitalidadeNone is published. Collector dinners, private views ahead of the public opening and receptions attached to single-owner collections are organized by the specialist departments for their own clients. A visitor without a relationship should build the week around the free exhibitions, the museum and gallery programme and the day sales, which together make a genuinely interesting five days.

09Histórico

The November slot grew out of the older Impressionist and modern season, already a fixture by the 1970s as American collections assembled between the wars began to be dispersed. The contemporary evening sale attached itself to the same calendar and then overtook it in value. The pattern of two marquee weeks roughly six months apart has held for decades; what changed is the compression, and the reorganization of departments by century rather than by movement, which is why the sale names now refer to the twentieth and twenty-first centuries rather than to schools of painting. Sotheby's move to 945 Madison Avenue in 2025 relocated one of the week's three poles back into the gallery district. One further change is worth recording: bidding has moved off the floor almost entirely. Telephone banks and online platforms now carry the great majority of significant lots, which means the room at an evening sale is largely an audience rather than a market. That has made the sales more theatrical and, for anyone actually buying, less relevant to attend in person.

10Quem está presente

The same constituencies as May in different proportions: more executors, trustees and estate advisers, because November is when estates come to market; museum acquisition committees working against calendar-year budgets; dealers and advisers from Europe and Asia already through London and Paris in October; art lenders and specialist insurers. The public exhibitions draw a much wider audience and are not a trade event at all.
