Monterey Car Week is not one event but a dense cluster of them, staged independently across Monterey County in the ten days that end on the third Sunday of August. The Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance closes it; the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion runs historic racing at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca; The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering fills a golf lawn in Carmel Valley on the Friday; Concorso Italiano, Legends of the Autobahn and the free Concours d'Lemons occupy their own days and their own fields. Alongside them sit the week's real commercial engine: the collector-car auctions run by RM Sotheby's, Gooding Christie's, Bonhams, Mecum and Broad Arrow, whose previews are open to ticket holders for days before the hammer falls.

The structure repeats each year and is worth understanding before booking anything. The first weekend is quiet and cheap. Monday to Wednesday bring the smaller local shows, the Carmel-by-the-Sea events and the first auction previews. Thursday is the Pebble Beach Tour d'Elegance, when Concours entrants drive the coast road and stop in Carmel, and the auctions begin selling. Friday belongs to The Quail and to Laguna Seca qualifying. Saturday is the heaviest day, with racing, several concours and the largest auction sessions running simultaneously. Sunday is Pebble Beach and nothing else.

For 2026 the Pebble Beach Company put the week at more than thirty-five events and cited over 100,000 visitors and an estimated $130 million in visitor spending. That is the scale a visitor should plan around: a peninsula of roughly 100,000 residents absorbing an equivalent number of people who all want to drive somewhere at the same time.

01Waarom het relevant is

Car week is where the collector-car market sets its price levels for the year. The August auctions are the largest concentrated sale of significant cars anywhere, and the results are read by dealers, insurers and valuation indices for months afterward; in 2014, the peak year commonly cited, the week's auctions totaled $463.7 million and a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO sold for $38.1 million. Manufacturers schedule limited-series reveals here rather than at motor shows because the buyers are already on the peninsula, and specialist restorers, historians and marque registries use the week as their annual convention whether or not they have a car entered.

In our reading, the week's importance lies in its unusual completeness. Most collecting fields separate the scholarly event, the market event and the commercial showcase. Monterey puts all three within twenty minutes of each other for ten days, and the result is that decisions about cars — buying, selling, restoring, authenticating — get made in person here in a way they no longer do anywhere else in the calendar.

02De week eromheen

The peninsula changes completely. Traffic on Highway 1 and Highway 68 slows for most of the day rather than at peaks, and the drive from Monterey to Carmel that normally takes fifteen minutes can take an hour on the Friday and Saturday. Cars are the public entertainment: Ocean Avenue in Carmel, Cannery Row and Alvarado Street in Monterey, and the hotel forecourts all become informal displays that cost nothing to walk past. Restaurants extend hours, several close streets for their own events, and the peninsula's police departments publish enforcement notices about street exhibitions.

The auction previews are the most underrated public access of the week. For the price of a catalog or a day ticket, anyone can walk among cars that will not be seen together again, at Monterey Conference Center, at Quail Lodge and at the Pebble Beach Equestrian Center. Concours d'Lemons in Seaside on the Saturday is free and deliberately ridiculous, and functions as the week's release valve.

03Wanneer aan te komen

Arrive Wednesday. Monday and Tuesday have little that a visitor travels for, and Wednesday gets you the Carmel-by-the-Sea events and the first serious auction previews before the crowd arrives. Thursday through Sunday is the week proper. Depart Monday: Sunday evening departures collide with the entire peninsula leaving at once, and the drive to San Jose or San Francisco is at its worst. If you can only take a long weekend, Thursday to Sunday captures the Tour d'Elegance, The Quail, Laguna Seca and the Concours.

04Waar te verblijven

Carmel-by-the-Sea is the best base for the week as a whole: walkable, full of restaurants, close to Pebble Beach and Carmel Valley, and lively every evening. Pebble Beach itself, inside the 17-Mile Drive gate, is the most convenient for the Sunday and the most difficult to book; The Lodge at Pebble Beach and The Inn at Spanish Bay are the landmarks. Monterey and Cannery Row put you next to the auctions and closest to Laguna Seca, with a livelier and less expensive street scene. Carmel Valley suits anyone whose week centers on The Quail, at the cost of a twisting drive to everything else.

Most regulars take a house rather than a hotel room, often for the full ten days, and many rebook the same property annually. Overflow lodging fills outward through Seaside, Marina, Salinas and eventually Santa Cruz and Gilroy; those are perfectly workable if you accept early starts and long drives.

05Toegang en hospitality

There is no single ticket. Each event sells its own: the Pebble Beach Concours and The Quail through their organizers, Laguna Seca through the raceway, the auctions through the auction houses, and several of the smaller shows free at the gate. That fragmentation is the week's defining practical feature and the reason planning starts months ahead. The Quail sells out earliest and is the hardest ticket of the week; Laguna Seca is the easiest and the best value; the auction previews are the cheapest way to see extraordinary cars. Manufacturer and brand hospitality on the peninsula is by invitation and is not sold. Bidder registration at the auction houses requires financial references and is handled individually by each house.

06Waar de sociale activiteit plaatsvindt

Carmel-by-the-Sea is the week's living room, particularly Ocean Avenue, the courtyards off it and the hotel bars, which stay busy from Wednesday. Monterey's Cannery Row and the Portola and Monterey Plaza hotel terraces carry the auction and trade crowd. The Lodge terrace at Pebble Beach and the Quail Lodge lawn are the two places where the collecting world concentrates most visibly, both requiring a ticket. Laguna Seca's paddock is open and sociable and, for anyone who wants to talk to owners and mechanics rather than watch from a rope, the most rewarding place on the peninsula.

07Hoe u er komt

Commerciële luchtvaartMonterey Regional Airport (MRY) sits between Monterey and Carmel with limited regional service that sells out months ahead in August. San Jose (SJC) is about seventy-five minutes away and is the practical choice; San Francisco (SFO) is roughly two hours in normal traffic and considerably more on the Sunday.
TreinNo rail reaches the peninsula. Amtrak serves Salinas, about twenty-five minutes inland, with connecting buses to Monterey.
AutoA car is effectively required and the whole week is organized around driving. Highway 1 and Highway 68 are the only approaches and both are saturated from Thursday. Rental cars on the peninsula sell out well in advance and one-way rates from the Bay Area rise sharply in August.
PrivéluchtvaartMonterey Regional Airport is the business-aviation gateway and the ramp fills for car week; handlers require advance arrangements for parking and slots. Salinas Municipal and San Jose take the overflow.
HelikopterCharter helicopter transfers from the Bay Area run during the week. There is no public helipad in Pebble Beach and landing options within the Del Monte Forest are limited.
JachthavensMonterey Harbor is a small working and recreational marina without superyacht berths; arrival by sea plays no part in the week.

08Praktische informatie

DresscodeThere is no single code because there is no single event. Laguna Seca and the street shows are shorts and sunscreen. The Quail is garden-party dress, jackets and dresses, on grass. The Concours is jackets, hats and flat shoes, layered heavily for a cold foggy morning. Evenings in Carmel are smart but not formal. Bring a warm layer for every day regardless of the forecast.
WeerCoastal August on the Monterey Peninsula is cool and often grey. A marine layer typically covers the coast overnight and into the morning and may or may not clear by afternoon; inland Carmel Valley and Salinas run substantially warmer and sunnier on the same day, which is why The Quail feels like a different climate from Pebble Beach. Rain is rare. No station normals were sourced for this record.
Verplaatsing ter plaatseAllow double the mapped driving time from Thursday onward and triple it on Saturday. Several events run their own shuttles from off-site parking and using them is almost always faster than driving in. Ride-hailing works in Monterey and Carmel but surges heavily and struggles inside 17-Mile Drive. Cycling between Monterey and Carmel on the recreation trail is genuinely quicker than driving on the busiest days.
HotelsThis is the peninsula's highest-demand week of the year by a wide margin. Multi-night minimums are standard, rates are at their annual peak, and the best properties in Pebble Beach and Carmel take bookings a year ahead with returning guests rebooking on departure. Late availability appears in Seaside, Marina and Salinas rather than anywhere central.
RestaurantsCarmel and Monterey have far more demand than tables from Wednesday to Sunday. Book the Friday and Saturday well in advance; lunch is much easier than dinner throughout. Several restaurants run private buyouts for brand and auction events during the week, which removes capacity without warning. Pacific Grove and Carmel Valley are the reliable fallbacks.
ReserveringstimingLodging six to twelve months ahead, longer for Pebble Beach and central Carmel. Event tickets from the spring, with The Quail and Concours hospitality selling out first. Restaurant tables four to eight weeks ahead for the weekend nights. Rental cars and private-aviation handling as early as possible.
TicketsEvery constituent event ticketed separately by its own organizer, with no umbrella pass. The Pebble Beach Concours, The Quail, Concorso Italiano and the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion all sell general admission online in advance. Auction previews are ticketed cheaply or included with a catalog; bidding requires separate registration. Concours d'Lemons, the Pacific Grove Rotary auto rally, Exotics on Broadway and the street displays in Carmel and Monterey are free to watch.
HospitalityEach organizer publishes its own hospitality tiers — reserved seating and catering at the Concours, garden pavilions at The Quail, paddock and suite packages at Laguna Seca. Manufacturer and sponsor hospitality across the peninsula is by invitation and is not on sale. We did not verify current published prices for any tier and quote none.

09Geschiedenis

Everything descends from the Pebble Beach Road Race, first run through the Del Monte Forest in 1950, with a small concours staged alongside it as a companion attraction. The race moved to the new Laguna Seca circuit in 1957 and the concours stayed on the golf links. For two decades the August weekend was a local affair. From the 1970s the international collector market discovered it, and the auction houses followed; Laguna Seca's historic race meeting, founded in 1974 and later sponsored by Rolex, gave the week a second anchor at the other end of the peninsula.

The expansion from a weekend to a full week happened in the 1990s and 2000s as new events filled the vacant days: Concorso Italiano in 1985, The Quail in 2003, and a steady accretion of hotel lawns, dealer displays and manufacturer activations that had no formal organizer at all. The county's tourism authority began publishing an umbrella calendar rather than trying to run the week. Recent years have brought friction as well as growth, with local complaints about traffic and unsanctioned street activity in Monterey and Seaside prompting increased enforcement.

10Wie is er

Collectors and their families; dealers, brokers and restoration specialists; auction house staff, consignors and bidders; manufacturer executives, designers and product teams; racing drivers and team principals from the historic scene; motoring media; and a very large general public, much of it Californian, that treats the week as an accessible spectacle. The mix shifts by venue: the auctions and The Quail skew heavily to owners and trade, Laguna Seca and the street events to enthusiasts of every budget.
