The clay season's opening Masters 1000, played on terraces above the Mediterranean at a private club just outside Monaco.
An event page tells you when it happens (with how sure we are of the date), why it matters, how the week around it feels, when to arrive and leave, where people stay, how access works, and which events come before and after it on the circuit.
The tournament everyone calls Monte-Carlo is not in Monaco. The Monte-Carlo Country Club sits a few hundred metres over the border in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France, on terraces cut into the hillside above the sea, about fifteen minutes' walk from the principality along the Basse Corniche. The club was built in 1928 and has never been rebuilt the way other Masters venues have: the courts descend the slope in tiers, the main stand looks past the baseline to open water, and the whole site holds a fraction of what a modern hard-court arena does.
In sporting terms this is an ATP Masters 1000, the first of the European clay swing, with a 56-player singles draw and byes for the top seeds. Since 2009 it has been the only Masters 1000 without a mandatory player commitment, a concession won when the tour restructured, which in practice has changed little: many of the leading men live in Monaco or nearby and enter regardless.
What distinguishes the week is scale and setting. Ground access reaches almost every court, the outside courts sit close to the walkways, and the terraces above function as the tournament's own promenade. Early rounds are unhurried; from the quarter-finals the site is full. Rain is the recurring problem, since the club has no roof.
01Why it matters
Monte-Carlo is where the clay season starts, and the clay season is where the European calendar starts. For the tennis tour it is the first read on Roland-Garros. For the Riviera it is the fixture that reopens the coast: the hotels come back to full staffing, the harbor fills, and the run through the Grand Prix, Cannes and the summer begins here. In our reading its real distinction is that it is the last major tournament that still looks like a club rather than a stadium.
02The week around it
April is the hinge of the Riviera year, and this is the week it turns.
The tournament's own surrounding programme is modest by the standards of the calendar and largely contained within the club: sponsor terraces, the watch house's pavilion, and the organizer's gala evening, La Grande Nuit du Tennis.
03When to arrive
Arrive Monday or Tuesday of tournament week for the best combination: full early-round programmes across the terraces, room to walk, and the coast still quiet. The final weekend is the crowded part, and the semi-final Saturday is the single best day if you want one. Four nights covers it comfortably.
04Where to stay
Monte-Carlo itself is the default, and the hotels on and around the Casino square put you fifteen minutes from the club by shuttle or taxi, with the principality's restaurants and terraces on your doorstep. Roquebrune-Cap-Martin and Cap Martin, immediately around the club, are quieter and have a handful of hotels and a lot of villa rental; you can walk to the gates, which nobody else can.
05Access and hospitality
The organizer sells directly and publishes its on-sale calendar well ahead. Buyers who purchased through official channels the previous year receive a Loyalty Privilege window before general sale; for the 2027 edition the organizer lists that window opening on 1 October and the general public sale on 15 October, with the season's prices announced in early September. Tickets are sold by day, and a day ticket carries access to the grounds and the outside courts as well as a seat in Court Rainier III, which is unusual and is what makes the early rounds good value here. The organizer's published hospitality tiers are boxes, hospitality packages and hospitality suites, plus places at La Grande Nuit du Tennis, the tournament's gala evening; the ticketing service is run in-house in Monaco rather than through a third-party platform. Because the venue is small and the loyalty window absorbs a significant share of the good seats, the final weekend sells out; midweek days remain obtainable much later.
06Where the social activity happens
The club's own terraces are the social center of the week and they are open to any ticket-holder: the restaurant terrace above the main court, the walkway between the practice courts, and the tiers where people sit through the afternoon with the sea behind them.

08Practicalities
09History
The event began in April 1896 as the Monte-Carlo International, staged to give the principality's winter visitors something to do in spring, and it is among the oldest continuously run tournaments in the sport. It moved to its present ground at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin when the Monte-Carlo Country Club opened in 1928, a project of the era when the Societe des Bains de Mer was building the Riviera's season around sport as much as gambling.
10Who is there
A Riviera crowd rather than a touring tennis crowd: Monaco residents including a substantial number of the players themselves, French and Italian visitors from along the coast, watch and finance sponsors entertaining in the boxes, and an international minority that treats the week as the season's first Mediterranean trip.
