Strictly speaking this is the Costume Institute Benefit, a fundraising dinner that pays for a curatorial department's year. Everything else about it is consequence. Invitations are issued by the museum and by the evening's chair; fashion houses take tables and bring their own guests; there is no public sale and the museum publishes no price. The shape of the night has been stable for years: arrivals up the Fifth Avenue steps, where a carpet and a press bank are built several days in advance, then a cocktail hour, a private walk through the Costume Institute's new spring exhibition, a seated dinner inside the museum and a performance. Photography inside has been restricted in recent years, which is why almost every image that reaches the public is made on the steps.

The gala exists to open an exhibition, and the exhibition is the part a reader can actually see. In 2026 it was Costume Art, which went on view on May 10 and runs until January 10, 2027; the museum's announcement describes it as setting garments against works from across the collection to argue that dress and the represented body belong to the same history. The dress code published for guests is written against that exhibition, which is where the annual parlour game about who interpreted the theme correctly comes from.

For anyone not invited, the event is a street occasion and a broadcast. The steps and the pavement opposite fill from the afternoon, the carpet arrivals are streamed, and the galleries used for the dinner are closed off while they are set. Five days later the same exhibition admits anyone with a museum ticket, usually with far more to look at than the gala photographs suggest.

01Pourquoi c'est important

No other single evening concentrates this much of fashion's promotional machinery in one place, and none produces as many images. For the museum the arithmetic is plain: the benefit is the Costume Institute's principal source of funding, which is why a department of dress inside an encyclopedic art museum can mount an exhibition on the scale it does. For the houses it is the year's largest single brand exercise, and the table is the unit of spend.

In our reading the gala's authority is borrowed in both directions. The museum lends fashion the legitimacy of an art institution; fashion lends the museum an audience no other department can summon. That exchange has been criticised for decades and has never once reduced the gala's pull. The honest assessment for a reader is that the Met Gala is not an event to attend but an event to watch, followed by an exhibition worth the trip in its own right.

02La semaine environnante

Early May is one of New York's two densest cultural stretches, and in 2026 the gala arrived just before all of it. Frieze New York ran May 13 to 17, TEFAF New York May 15 to 19, the spring auctions at the major houses through the week of May 14, and NYCxDesign across the same days. Anyone in town for the art and design calendar was a week late for the gala and a week early for nothing.

The immediate effect on the neighbourhood is small but real. The Fifth Avenue steps are fenced, carpeted and tented for several days; the stretch of pavement opposite the museum, on the Central Park side, is where the public stands, and it fills from mid-afternoon. Traffic on Fifth Avenue in the Eighties is slow from late afternoon. Carlyle and Upper East Side hotels handle a large share of the guest preparation, which is reported every year and which we do not describe from the inside. Museum Mile otherwise runs normally.

03Quand arriver

There is nothing to arrive for unless you are invited, and the honest advice is to plan around the exhibition rather than the dinner. A visitor who wants the Costume Institute show at its quietest should come in the first half of June, after the opening fortnight and before the summer crowds; the last weeks before it closes in January are the busiest of its run. If you want to watch the arrivals, be on the Central Park side of Fifth Avenue by mid-afternoon on the first Monday in May and expect to stand. For the art and auction calendar, the following week is the one that matters.

04Où séjourner

The Upper East Side between Madison and Fifth, from the Sixties into the Eighties, is the neighbourhood the event belongs to, and the Carlyle on East 76th and the Mark on East 77th are its recognised landmarks rather than recommendations. Staying there puts you inside the only geography the evening occupies. Midtown around 57th Street and the Plaza District is the default for anyone combining the museum with business. Downtown, Tribeca and SoHo suit a trip built around Frieze and the galleries more than around the museum. No hotel rates are quoted here; the gala does not drive city-wide hotel pressure the way fashion week or the UN General Assembly does, and early May pricing is ordinary spring pricing.

05Accès et hospitalité

The benefit is invitation-only and the museum does not sell seats, publish prices, or operate a hospitality programme around it. Invitations come from the museum and the gala's chair; tables are largely taken by fashion houses and corporate partners, who fill them with their own guests. Reporting has put per-seat and per-table figures in the high tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars respectively; the museum has never published a tariff and no figure is stated here. Press access is limited to an accredited bank on the steps and a small pool inside. What is genuinely open is the exhibition: Costume Art is included with general admission to The Met Fifth Avenue for the length of its run, and the museum's timed-entry tickets are sold online in the ordinary way.

06Où se déroule l'activité sociale

The public geography is short: the Metropolitan's steps, the Fifth Avenue pavement opposite, and the entrance to Central Park at 79th Street, where the crowd thins and the sightlines are worse. Everything else on gala night is closed. The after-parties that follow are extensively reported and are held in private rooms at downtown hotels and members' clubs; we describe none of them and name nobody. The durable public answer is the museum itself, where the Costume Institute galleries and the Anna Wintour Costume Center carry the exhibition for the next eight months, and the restaurants and bars of Madison Avenue and Lexington in the Seventies, which absorb the ordinary museum crowd.

07Comment s'y rendre

Aviation commercialeJohn F. Kennedy (JFK), Newark (EWR) and LaGuardia (LGA) all serve the city; LaGuardia is closest to the Upper East Side and JFK carries most long-haul traffic. Allow an hour or more by road from any of them in the late afternoon.
RailGrand Central Terminal and Penn Station put you twenty minutes from the museum. The Lexington Avenue subway (4, 5, 6) stops at 77th and 86th Streets, two blocks east of the Met, and the Second Avenue line (Q) stops at 86th; on gala afternoon the subway is substantially faster than a car.
VoitureFifth Avenue northbound is closed or heavily restricted around the museum on the evening of the gala, and the side streets in the Seventies and Eighties are used for staging. Drop-offs move to Madison or to Central Park West.
Aviation privéeTeterboro (TEB) is the principal business-aviation field for Manhattan, with Westchester County (HPN) and Morristown (MMU) as alternates. Ground transfer from Teterboro to the Upper East Side is the slow part of the journey.
HélicoptèreThe East 34th Street Heliport and the Downtown Manhattan Heliport handle on-demand and shuttle traffic from the New Jersey and Westchester fields.

08Informations pratiques

Tenue vestimentaireGuests dress to a code published by the museum against the exhibition's theme; in 2026 it was 'fashion is art', and interpretation is the entire exercise. For anyone watching from the street, early May in New York can be cold after sunset and you will be standing for hours, so the practical answer is layers and shoes you can stand in. Visiting the exhibition later in its run requires nothing at all.
MétéoEarly May in New York is mild and unsettled, with daytime highs typically in the high teens to low twenties Celsius, cool evenings and a real chance of rain. No station normals were sourced for this record, so the description is qualitative.
Se déplacerThe Lexington Avenue and Second Avenue subway lines are the reliable way to reach the museum on gala day; taxis and car services queue badly in the Seventies and Eighties from late afternoon. Crosstown buses on 79th and 86th Streets connect the Upper East and Upper West Sides. Walking from anywhere between 60th and 96th Streets is faster than any vehicle during arrivals.
HôtelsThe gala is a single evening and does not move the city's hotel market; early May rates are driven more by the art fairs and auctions the following week. Upper East Side rooms near the museum are the exception and tighten for the first weekend of May. Booking four to six weeks ahead is generally sufficient.
RestaurantsMadison Avenue and Lexington in the Seventies and Eighties carry the museum trade and take reservations a week or two out. The small number of well-known rooms in the neighbourhood are committed on gala night itself. Downtown is unaffected.
Délais de réservationHotels a month ahead for early May; sooner if the trip also covers the mid-May fairs and auctions. Museum timed-entry tickets for the Costume Institute exhibition can be bought days ahead for most of its run, though the first fortnight and the final weeks fill.
BilletsThere is no public ticket to the benefit. The exhibition it opens is included with general admission to The Met Fifth Avenue, which the museum sells online with timed entry; admission terms were not read for this record and no price is quoted. Costume Art is on view May 10, 2026 to January 10, 2027.
HospitalitéThe museum runs no purchasable hospitality around the gala. Tables are allocated to fashion houses, corporate partners and benefactors by the museum and the evening's chair. No figures are published and none are stated here. The after-programme is entirely private.

09Historique

The benefit was established in 1946 by Eleanor Lambert, the publicist who also created New York's Press Week, and the first substantial event was held in 1948. For its first two decades it was a midnight supper run by and for New York society, held outside the museum as often as inside, and the Costume Institute itself was a semi-independent body before it became a curatorial department of the Metropolitan.

The modern form dates from the 1970s, when the evening moved firmly inside the building and was tied to the Costume Institute's annual exhibition, giving each year a theme and a reason for the dress code. Anna Wintour has chaired it since 1995, with a single year's interruption in 1996, and under her the guest list shifted from New York philanthropy toward fashion, film and music, and the arrivals became the point. The themes have grown more ambitious in parallel, and the exhibitions they open now routinely become the Costume Institute's most-visited shows.

10Qui s'y trouve

Fashion house executives and designers, magazine editors, film, music and sport figures whose appearance is the evening's public product, museum trustees and benefactors, and the corporate partners who take tables. Everyone present is there by invitation, most of them as a guest of a brand rather than of the museum. Outside the fence the audience is the general public, local and visiting, and an accredited press corps.
