Maison&Objet is a buying fair before it is anything else. It runs twice a year at Paris Nord Villepinte, the exhibition halls out beyond the northern périphérique, and it is restricted to professional visitors: retailers, interior designers, hotel and restaurant buyers, agents and distributors. The sectors are divided by what they sell rather than by style — decoration and design, fine craft, fragrance and wellness, fashion accessories, gift, and cook and share — and the halls are laid out for writing orders rather than for photography.

That matters because it makes M&O the least glamorous and one of the most useful fixtures on the design calendar. Where Milan is a manufacturers' showcase and London a public festival, Villepinte is where independent shops across Europe buy the year's stock, and where a small French or Portuguese studio can find its first fifty stockists. The Designer of the Year award, given at each edition, has gone to Tokujin Yoshioka, Tom Dixon, Ilse Crawford and Sebastian Herkner among others.

The September edition comes with a second event attached. Paris Design Week, run under the same organization, spreads a public programme across the city for about ten days — showrooms, galleries, institutions and the design districts of the Marais, Saint-Germain and the eastern arrondissements — and it opens on the same day the fair does. In 2026 the fair runs September 10–14 and the city week September 10–19. Anyone visiting for design rather than for buying will spend most of their time in Paris and one day at Villepinte.

01Warum es relevant ist

Two editions a year, five days each, and a very large share of Europe's independent interiors retail buying passes through them. For the studios and small manufacturers who exhibit, M&O is the difference between a business and a hobby, and for the trade it is the calendar's most efficient week: the halls are big, the sectors are clearly divided, and nobody is there for the party. In our reading, the January edition is the more commercially serious of the two and the September one the more interesting to visit, because Paris Design Week gives it a public dimension the fair itself deliberately lacks.

02Die Woche darum

In January the fair sits alone; Paris in the third week of the month is quiet, cold and cheap by its own standards, and the fair's visitors are the only thing filling the northern hotels. September is different. Paris Design Week fills the Marais, Saint-Germain, the Bastille furniture quarter along the Faubourg Saint-Antoine and the newer design streets of the 10th and 11th with showroom openings and installations, most of them free. The Mobilier National, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs and the design galleries of the Left Bank all program against it. Paris Fashion Week follows at the end of September, which is a separate event and a separate audience.

03Anreisezeitpunkt

For the fair, come in on the Wednesday evening and give Villepinte a full day on the Thursday or Friday, when the halls are busiest but the exhibitors are freshest; Sunday and Monday are quieter and better for talking. For Paris Design Week, arrive on the opening Thursday and stay through the first weekend, when the showroom programmes are complete and the openings happen. Three nights covers both if you are efficient about the RER.

04Unterkunft

Stay in Paris, not near the fair. The hotels around Roissy and Villepinte are convenient and joyless, and the RER B from central Paris reaches the exhibition centre in about thirty-five minutes. The Marais and the 11th put you inside the September design programme; Saint-Germain covers the Left Bank galleries; the 9th and 10th around Gare du Nord shorten the RER journey and are well supplied with places to eat. During Paris Design Week the city is busy but not full, and rooms are available much later than for fashion week.

05Zugang und Hospitality

Maison&Objet is trade only. Admission requires a professional badge, obtained by registering in advance with evidence of a design, decoration or lifestyle business; the fair is not open to the general public on any day. Paris Design Week, by contrast, is free and open to everyone, with the great majority of its programme requiring neither ticket nor registration. Some showroom events during the city week are by invitation through the brands themselves. The fair publishes no hospitality tiers.

06Wo das gesellschaftliche Geschehen stattfindet

During the September week, the design streets carry it: the Marais around Rue de Turenne and Rue Charlot, Saint-Germain around Rue de Lille and Rue Bonaparte for the twentieth-century dealers, the Faubourg Saint-Antoine for the furniture trade, and the cafés and wine bars of the 10th and 11th in the evenings. At Villepinte itself the social life is the fair's own restaurants and the RER platform. In January there is no city programme, and the trade eats in Paris proper.

07Anreise

LinienluftfahrtCharles de Gaulle (CDG) is about ten minutes from the exhibition centre and connected to it by the RER B, which makes M&O one of the few major fairs where flying in and going straight to the halls is sensible. Orly (ORY) is on the other side of the city, around an hour away.
BahnEurostar and the TGV network reach Gare du Nord, from which the RER B runs directly to Parc des Expositions station beside the halls in around thirty-five minutes.
AutoThe A1 and A104 serve the exhibition centre and parking is available, but the northern approaches are heavily congested on fair mornings and the RER is faster from anywhere in Paris.
PrivatluftfahrtLe Bourget is the principal business-aviation airport for Paris and is fifteen minutes from Villepinte, closer to the fair than to the city.
HubschrauberParis–Issy heliport handles helicopter movements for the city; there is no routine service to the exhibition centre.

08Praktische Hinweise

KleidungBusiness casual and comfortable shoes; Villepinte is several kilometers of hall floor and the trade dresses for a working day. Paris Design Week evenings are informal. January in Paris is cold and often wet, September mild.
WetterThe January edition falls in the coldest and greyest stretch of the Paris year, with short days and frequent rain; the September edition catches the end of the Paris summer, usually warm and often the pleasantest weather of the year for walking the city. We did not retrieve Météo-France normals for this record, so no figures are given.
Vor Ort navigierenThe RER B from Gare du Nord, Châtelet or Denfert-Rochereau to Parc des Expositions is the only sensible route to the fair; trains run frequently and take roughly thirty-five minutes from the center. Shuttle buses connect the station to the hall entrances. Within Paris during the September week, the Métro and walking cover the design districts; the Marais and Saint-Germain are best on foot.
HotelsNeither edition creates real scarcity in a city with Paris's hotel supply. The January edition is one of the cheapest weeks of the Paris year. September is busier but the pressure comes from the general end of the tourist season rather than from the fair. Four to six weeks ahead is comfortable for either; leave more time if you want the Marais during Paris Design Week.
RestaurantsNo fair-driven pressure. Villepinte itself offers only the exhibition centre's own catering, which is adequate and crowded at one o'clock; experienced visitors eat early or late. In Paris, the design districts' restaurants fill on the September opening nights and are otherwise normal. Two weeks' notice is plenty.
ReservierungszeitpunktHotels four to six weeks ahead. Trade badges should be registered online well before travelling — registration requires proof of profession and is slower at the door. Paris Design Week needs no booking for most of its programme, though a few showroom events open registration a week or two beforehand.
TicketsEntry to Maison&Objet is by professional badge only, registered in advance with evidence of a trade activity; the fair does not sell general public admission. Paris Design Week is free and open to all, and its programme and map are published on the organizer's site. Museums and design institutions participating in the city week charge their normal admission.
HospitalityNo hospitality programme is sold. Exhibitors host their own client events on the stands and in Paris showrooms during the September week, by their own invitation. The Designer of the Year presentation and the fair's talks programme are open to badge holders. For a visitor without a trade badge, Paris Design Week in September is the whole of the accessible event, and it is substantial.

09Geschichte

The fair is organized by SAFI, which sits between the French crafts federation and a commercial exhibition group, and it grew out of the French decorative arts and gift trades rather than out of furniture manufacturing. That inheritance still shows in the balance of the halls, where tableware, scent, textiles and small objects occupy as much space as furniture. Its scale by the late 2010s was substantial: the September 2018 edition recorded 3,112 exhibitors from 72 countries and 119,633 visitors. Paris Design Week was added later as a way of extending the fair's reach into the city, and it has grown into the more visible of the two events among the general public.

10Wer ist dort

Retail buyers and store owners, in very large numbers and from across Europe; interior designers and architects specifying for private and hospitality projects; hotel and restaurant procurement; agents, distributors and importers; and the exhibiting studios and manufacturers themselves. Paris Design Week in September broadens this considerably, adding the general public, students and the design press to the same days.
