A two-week clay Masters played at altitude in a Dominique Perrault building on the edge of Madrid.
The Mutua Madrid Open is the newest of the big clay tournaments and the least tied to tradition. It began in 2002 as a men's indoor hard-court event at the Madrid Arena and was rebuilt in 2009, when it moved to the Caja Magica in the Manzanares park south of the city, switched to outdoor red clay and added a women's tournament. The building, by Dominique Perrault, is a steel box containing three courts with independently retractable roofs.
The tennis has a distinct character because Madrid sits at roughly 650 metres: the ball travels further and faster than on any other clay of the season. Both draws hold 96 players across two weeks. As a visit it is efficient rather than charming, twenty minutes from the centre with nothing around it but the park and the river, and a large commercial village serving as its social centre.
01Pourquoi c'est important
Madrid is the largest clay tournament between Monte-Carlo and Rome and the first two-week clay event of the year, which gives it a disproportionate share of the spring's ranking points and attention. In our reading its social weight is Spanish rather than international: it is Madrid's tennis fortnight, entwined with the city's own spring calendar and the run-up to the San Isidro season, and it draws far fewer travelling visitors than its sporting rank suggests.
02La semaine environnante
Madrid in late April is at the start of its best season, and the tournament runs into the beginning of the city's spring festivities: the Dos de Mayo holiday falls on the final weekend in most years and the San Isidro programme follows in mid-May.
03Quand arriver
The first weekend and the Monday and Tuesday after it are the best value, with qualifying and early rounds spread across all three roofed courts and the outside courts.
04Où séjourner
There is nothing to stay in near the venue, so choose on the city's terms. Salamanca and the Castellana corridor suit the corporate visitor and give the fastest run south by taxi.
05Accès et hospitalité
Tickets are sold through the tournament's own online platform, which the organizer states remains open until the day before each session or until sessions sell out, with the Caja Magica box office opening in early April.
06Où se déroule l'activité sociale
On site, the public social space is the commercial village between the three courts, with its food and drink concessions and sponsor pavilions, plus the outdoor terraces on the upper concourse.

08Informations pratiques
09Historique
The tournament was created in 2002 as an indoor Masters in a city that had no top-tier event, and for its first seven years it was a hard-court autumn fixture.
10Qui s'y trouve
A largely Spanish crowd, drawn from Madrid and from the regions, with substantial corporate hospitality from Spanish banking, insurance and telecoms, the touring tennis industry, and an international minority that is smaller here than at any other Masters 1000 of comparable size.
