The Mutua Madrid Open is the newest of the big clay tournaments and the least tied to tradition. It began in 2002 as a men's indoor hard-court event at the Madrid Arena and was rebuilt in 2009, when it moved to the Caja Magica in the Manzanares park south of the city, switched to outdoor red clay and added a women's tournament. The building, by Dominique Perrault, is a steel box containing three courts with independently retractable roofs.

The tennis has a distinct character because Madrid sits at roughly 650 metres: the ball travels further and faster than on any other clay of the season. Both draws hold 96 players across two weeks. As a visit it is efficient rather than charming, twenty minutes from the centre with nothing around it but the park and the river, and a large commercial village serving as its social centre.

01Warum es relevant ist

Madrid is the largest clay tournament between Monte-Carlo and Rome and the first two-week clay event of the year, which gives it a disproportionate share of the spring's ranking points and attention. In our reading its social weight is Spanish rather than international: it is Madrid's tennis fortnight, entwined with the city's own spring calendar and the run-up to the San Isidro season, and it draws far fewer travelling visitors than its sporting rank suggests.

02Die Woche darum

Madrid in late April is at the start of its best season, and the tournament runs into the beginning of the city's spring festivities: the Dos de Mayo holiday falls on the final weekend in most years and the San Isidro programme follows in mid-May.

03Anreisezeitpunkt

The first weekend and the Monday and Tuesday after it are the best value, with qualifying and early rounds spread across all three roofed courts and the outside courts.

04Unterkunft

There is nothing to stay in near the venue, so choose on the city's terms. Salamanca and the Castellana corridor suit the corporate visitor and give the fastest run south by taxi.

05Zugang und Hospitality

Tickets are sold through the tournament's own online platform, which the organizer states remains open until the day before each session or until sessions sell out, with the Caja Magica box office opening in early April.

06Wo das gesellschaftliche Geschehen stattfindet

On site, the public social space is the commercial village between the three courts, with its food and drink concessions and sponsor pavilions, plus the outdoor terraces on the upper concourse.

07Anreise

LinienluftfahrtMadrid-Barajas is about thirty minutes from the Caja Magica by road and considerably longer at rush hour.
BahnAtocha, fifteen minutes north, takes the high-speed network. Metro line 3 to San Fermin-Orcasur leaves a fifteen-minute walk, and shuttle buses run from central interchanges.
AutoThe venue has substantial paid parking and is reached from the M-40 and the A-4, which is why most local spectators drive.
PrivatluftfahrtBarajas has executive handling; Torrejon and Cuatro Vientos take smaller aircraft and sit closer to the south of the city.
HubschrauberNo landing at the Caja Magica and no scheduled service; charter operates from Cuatro Vientos.

08Praktische Hinweise

KleidungMadrid is a well-dressed city and the tournament is not, so the two do not have to match: daytime at the venue is shorts and shirts, evenings in the center are noticeably smarter.
WetterLate April and early May in Madrid typically bring daily highs around 22 to 25C, roughly 72 to 77F, with lows near 9 to 11C and very low humidity.
Vor Ort navigierenTaxis and ride-hail are the practical route from the center and cost little; the metro leaves a longer walk than most visitors expect.
HotelsMadrid has deep hotel stock and the tournament does not move it, so rooms and rates stay reasonable across the fortnight; the Dos de Mayo holiday weekend is the exception.
RestaurantsNothing near the venue. In the city, Salamanca and the center book two to three weeks out in spring and are otherwise unaffected by the tournament.
ReservierungszeitpunktTickets are on sale from the preceding autumn and remain available online until the day before each session unless sold out, which makes this the easiest big tournament to buy late.
TicketsSold on the tournament's own platform, open until the day before each session or until sold out, with a venue box office opening in early April.
HospitalityThe tournament sells official hospitality directly: boxes, club seats and restaurant packages inside the Caja Magica plus corporate space in the commercial village. No general tariff is published.

09Geschichte

The tournament was created in 2002 as an indoor Masters in a city that had no top-tier event, and for its first seven years it was a hard-court autumn fixture.

10Wer ist dort

A largely Spanish crowd, drawn from Madrid and from the regions, with substantial corporate hospitality from Spanish banking, insurance and telecoms, the touring tennis industry, and an international minority that is smaller here than at any other Masters 1000 of comparable size.
