London October Auction Week

Previsto · Christie's, 8 King Street, St James's; Sotheby's, 34–35 New Bond Street; Phillips, 30 Berkeley Square

Three days of evening sales in St James's, Mayfair and Berkeley Square, deliberately scheduled inside Frieze week so that London sells while the fairs are open.

Datas PrevistoNot yet announced. This week has one of the most reliable anchors on the calendar: the houses fix their London autumn evening sales to Frieze week, which falls in the middle of October, and they sell on the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday inside it so that collectors already in town for Regent's Park can walk to St James's, New Bond Street and Berkeley Square. Confirmation usually comes two to three months ahead, once Frieze has published its own dates.

Calendário típicothe middle of October, timed to open and close inside Frieze week
OrganizadorChristie's, Sotheby's and Phillips, each running its own London sales calendar

London's October sales exist because of a fair. Frieze opened in Regent's Park in 2003 and pulled the international trade into the city in the middle of October; within a few years Christie's, Sotheby's and Phillips had built evening sales around it, and the week became the third fixture of the auction year after New York's May and November. It is smaller than either — a few evening sales rather than a fortnight of them — and it is compressed into three days, which is the point.

The three salerooms are within a twenty-minute walk of one another. Christie's has sold from 8 King Street in St James's since the eighteenth century; Sotheby's is on New Bond Street; Phillips is on Berkeley Square. A collector can see a fair in Regent's Park in the morning, walk the Mayfair galleries in the afternoon and be in a saleroom by six, which no other city on the circuit makes quite this easy.

The exhibitions before each sale are free and open to the public, and in London they are notably good: the rooms are older and smaller than New York's, the hanging is denser, and the King Street galleries in particular are worth an hour on their own account.

01Por que importa

October is where London's standing in the international market is measured each year. The totals are modest against New York's, but the week is the clearest read available on European demand, on the trade's appetite for material consigned from British and continental collections, and on whether the buyers who came for the fairs also bid. It also functions as the trade's autumn meeting: dealers, advisers and specialists who will not all be in the same place again until November are in Mayfair for the same three days. In our reading, the week's position has become less certain than it was. Paris now stages a major fair in the same month and the houses sell there too; London's October is no longer the only European stop, and the sales have been shortened accordingly.

02A semana ao seu redor

Frieze London and Frieze Masters run in Regent's Park across the same days and are the reason most visitors are in town; both are ticketed and open to the public. PAD London sets up in Berkeley Square in the same fortnight. The Mayfair and St James's galleries schedule their strongest shows of the year against the week and stay open late, and the walk from Cork Street through Savile Row to Bond Street is the most concentrated hour of gallery-going London offers. Nothing closes and the city as a whole barely notices; the effect is confined to about a square mile, plus the north side of Regent's Park.

03Quando chegar

Arrive on the Tuesday. That gives you the fair previews, the pre-sale exhibitions at all three houses while they are still calm, and the Mayfair openings before the crowds. Leave on the Saturday if you want the fairs at the weekend, or on the Friday morning if the sales were the reason you came.

04Onde se hospedar

Mayfair puts you inside the week — Berkeley Square, Bond Street and Regent's Park are all walkable, and Claridge's, the Connaught and the Beaumont are the landmarks people navigate by. St James's is quieter, closer to Christie's, and empties at the weekend. Marylebone is the sensible compromise: nearer Regent's Park than Mayfair is, better for eating, and less expensive. Anywhere south of the river or in the City means a car or the Underground at exactly the hours when both are slow.

05Acesso e hospitalidade

Pre-sale exhibitions at Christie's, Sotheby's and Phillips are free and open to the public without appointment, and the London houses are relaxed about visitors. Evening sale rooms are small and access is controlled by the houses through bidder registration and existing client relationships; seats are not sold. All three stream their evening sales publicly. Registration to bid requires identification and references submitted in advance. Frieze London and Frieze Masters are separately ticketed and tickets are sold to the public. The houses publish no hospitality packages for this week.

06Onde ocorre a actividade social

The week lives in Mayfair and St James's. Cork Street, Dover Street and Bond Street for the galleries; the hotel bars along Brook Street and Mount Street, which fill from about seven; the restaurants around Berkeley Square and Shepherd Market, which are booked out for the three sale nights and unremarkable to get into on any other. Regent's Park itself holds the fair crowd during the day. The Royal Academy and the National Gallery run their autumn exhibitions through the same weeks and are five minutes from Christie's.

07Como chegar

Aviação comercialHeathrow (LHR) is the long-haul airport and connects to central London on the Elizabeth line in about half an hour; London City (LCY) is much closer and suits European arrivals; Gatwick (LGW) and Stansted (STN) carry the rest.
ComboioEurostar into St Pancras International from Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam, which is a fifteen-minute taxi from Mayfair and is the way most of the continental trade arrives for this week.
AutomóvelUnnecessary and awkward. The congestion charge and the ultra-low emission zone both apply, and parking in Mayfair is metered and scarce. The three salerooms are a walk apart.
Aviação privadaFarnborough (FAB), Luton (LTN) and Biggin Hill (BQH) are the business-aviation fields serving London; all three are between forty minutes and an hour and a quarter from Mayfair by road depending on the hour.
HelicópteroLondon Heliport at Battersea is the only licensed heliport in central London; transfers from the business-aviation airports are possible but are constrained by London's helicopter routing rules.

08Aspectos práticos

TrajeSuits and jackets at the evening sales; London is slightly more formal about them than New York. The exhibitions and the fairs have no dress code. Bring a coat and something waterproof — mid-October in London is not reliably dry.
ClimaCool and often wet. The London Weather Centre figures reported on Wikipedia give October a mean daily maximum of 16.1°C and a mean minimum of 10.9°C, and the Kew Gardens 1991–2020 normals give October about 68 mm of rain. Daylight is short by mid-month and the evening sales start after dark.
Deslocação e transporteThe whole week is walkable: Christie's to Sotheby's is about ten minutes, Sotheby's to Phillips five, and Berkeley Square to Regent's Park about twenty-five, or five minutes on the Jubilee and Bakerloo lines. Taxis in Mayfair between six and eight in the evening are slower than walking. Regent's Park is served by Great Portland Street, Regent's Park and Baker Street stations.
HotéisFrieze week is one of the two or three busiest weeks of the London hotel year and it is the fairs, not the auctions, that drive it. Mayfair fills first and rates rise noticeably across the middle week of October. Booking two to three months out is normal for anything in Mayfair or Marylebone; the week is bookable much later further out.
RestaurantesMayfair restaurants are fully committed on the three evening-sale nights and on the fair's opening days, and the good tables go a month ahead. Lunch is easier. Marylebone and Fitzrovia absorb the overflow and take bookings much later. The hotel bars do not take reservations and are standing room from about eight.
Prazo para reservasHotels two to three months ahead for Mayfair; six weeks is workable elsewhere. Restaurant tables three to four weeks out for sale nights. Frieze tickets go on sale months in advance and preview days sell out. Bidder registration with any of the houses should be filed at least a week before the sale.
IngressosThe auction exhibitions are free and unticketed. Access to the evening sale rooms is not sold and follows from bidder registration or a client relationship; all three houses stream the sales free online and publish results immediately. Frieze London and Frieze Masters sell public tickets, including day tickets and combined tickets for both fairs, through Frieze's own site. PAD London sells its own tickets separately.
HospitalidadeThe houses publish nothing. Collector dinners and private views before the public opening are arranged by departments for their own clients. Frieze operates a VIP programme for the fairs which is by invitation through galleries rather than for sale. A visitor without either can put together a full week from the free saleroom exhibitions, public fair tickets and the Mayfair gallery programme.

09Histórico

Christie's and Sotheby's have sold in London since 1766 and 1744 respectively, and for most of the twentieth century the city's marquee art sales sat in February and June. The October week is a recent invention, assembled after Frieze's arrival in 2003 gave the houses a reason to bring the international trade to London in the autumn. It grew through the 2010s, then contracted: sales that were once spread over a week now sit in three evenings, and some categories that used to sell in London in October now sell in New York or Paris instead. What has not changed is the geography. St James's, Mayfair and Berkeley Square have been the trade's ground for two centuries, and the week still works on foot.

10Quem está presente

Dealers and advisers from London, Paris, New York and Hong Kong; European collectors for whom this is the closest marquee sale of the year; museum curators and acquisition committees; the specialists and department heads of the three houses; and a wide public audience for the free exhibitions and the ticketed fairs. Because the week is compressed and walkable, it draws a higher proportion of trade professionals relative to collectors than New York does.

2026 ConfirmadoSotheby's publishes The London Sales as October 15–16, 2026 at New Bond Street. Reporting on Frieze week describes the three houses' evening-sale previews and sales falling across October 14, 15 and 16, alongside Frieze London and Frieze Masters in Regent's Park from October 14 to 18. Christie's own site could not be retrieved by our tooling, and Phillips's calendar renders client-side, so only the Sotheby's dates come from an organizer.
