le Bal, as its organizer now calls it, is a single evening in Paris at the end of November built around the presentation of roughly twenty to twenty-five young women aged sixteen to twenty-two, drawn from a deliberately international list. Each wears a haute couture or high-fashion gown lent for the night by the house that made it, with jewelry supplied by a single jeweler who partners the ball that year, and each is escorted by a cavalier - either someone she brings or someone the organizer pairs her with on the basis of age, height and shared languages. The evening's fixed elements are the presentation, in which the couples are introduced one by one, a first dance, dinner and dancing afterward.

Ophelie Renouard has run it since 1992 and selects the participants herself. The published rationale is that the ball is a fundraising evening and a showcase for couture, and the two are linked: the houses lend the dresses, the jeweler underwrites the evening, and the proceeds go to the causes the ball supports. Those have changed over time - Enfants d'Asie, which funds education for girls in Southeast Asia, was the principal beneficiary through the 2010s, and more recent editions have supported cardiac research and World Central Kitchen among others.

The ball is private and there is no public admission. What is public is everything that follows: the photographs, which are made on the Friday and Saturday under an arrangement with the international press, and the coverage that runs in Vanity Fair, Vogue and their equivalents in a dozen countries in the following weeks.

01Perché è rilevante

The debutante ball as an institution more or less died in the second half of the twentieth century - Britain ended court presentations in 1958, the year the Paris ball that le Bal takes as its ancestor was first held at Versailles - and this is the one that was successfully rebuilt as something else. It is not a marriage market and does not present itself as one; it is a fashion event with a charitable structure, and its currency is the couture houses' willingness to lend and the press's willingness to publish. In our reading, its significance in the international calendar is narrow but real: it is the last week of November's fixed point in Paris, it is watched closely by the fashion press, and it is one of the very few occasions where haute couture is worn in public by people who are not models. It has no public dimension at all beyond the photographs, which is worth saying plainly - a visitor to Paris that weekend will not see it and cannot attend it.

02La settimana intorno all'evento

The ball falls in the last week of November, when Paris has finished its autumn art season - Art Basel Paris and Paris Photo are over, the November auctions have run - and turned to Christmas. The Champs-Elysees and the grands boulevards light up in the third week of November, the department store windows on Boulevard Haussmann are unveiled, and the Christmas markets open. Hotel demand in the 8th and 16th arrondissements is moderate: this is a shoulder period between the autumn fairs and the holidays, and it is one of the better times of the year to be in Paris. The couture houses' ateliers are working on the January collections, which is one reason the loans for the ball are possible at all. Nothing about the ball itself changes the city; the streets around the venue are quiet.

03Quando arrivare

This is not an event a visitor plans a trip around, since it cannot be attended. For anyone in Paris that weekend for other reasons, arrive Thursday and stay through Sunday: the last weekend of November is when the Christmas lights are new, the museums are empty, and restaurant tables are obtainable. Participants and their families arrive on the Thursday or Friday for fittings, rehearsals and the photography, which occupy the whole of the Friday.

04Dove alloggiare

The 8th and 16th arrondissements are where the ball has historically been held and where its families stay - the Avenue Montaigne and Avenue George V axis, the streets around the Trocadero, and the Place de la Concorde end of the Rue de Rivoli. Saint-Germain and the 7th are the alternative for anyone who prefers the Left Bank and are twenty minutes away. The Marais and the 9th around the Opera are the value choices and are perfectly well connected. In late November, availability across all of these is good and rates are at their annual low outside the Christmas week.

05Accesso e ospitalità

There is no public access of any kind. le Bal is a private, invitation-only evening; no tickets are sold, there is no hospitality programme, and attendance is not purchasable. Participation as a debutante is by the organizer's selection and invitation, and applications are not a published process. The only things the ball makes public are its date, its charitable beneficiaries and the photographs. Any offer to sell entry should be treated as fraudulent.

06Dove si svolge l'attività sociale

Nothing about the evening happens in public. The surrounding week's public Paris is the ordinary one: the Avenue Montaigne and Rue Saint-Honore for the houses that lend the dresses, the Place Vendome for the jewelers, the hotel bars of the 8th - the Bristol, the Crillon, the Plaza Athenee - which are open to anyone who books, and the restaurants of the 8th, 16th and 7th. For a visitor, the useful observation is that the couture and jewelry trade of Paris is visible on the street all week and the ball is not.

07Come arrivare

Aviazione commercialeCharles de Gaulle is 25 km northeast, 35 to 50 minutes by road or about 45 minutes by RER B and Metro; Orly is 18 km south, around 30 minutes by road or 35 by Orlyval and RER. Both have wide long-haul networks.
TrenoGare du Nord takes Eurostar from London in two and a quarter hours and Thalys from Brussels and Amsterdam; Gare de Lyon serves the TGV south. All are 15 to 25 minutes from the 8th and 16th by Metro or taxi.
AutoParis traffic in late November is heavy from four in the afternoon and the low-emission zone applies. Taxis and the Metro are both better than driving. Hotel valet parking exists in the 8th but is expensive and slow.
Aviazione privataParis-Le Bourget is Europe's principal business-aviation airport, 15 km northeast of the centre and typically 25 to 40 minutes by road. Toussus-le-Noble and Pontoise handle lighter traffic.
ElicotteroParis Heliport at Issy-les-Moulineaux, on the southwestern edge of the city, is the only heliport serving central Paris and operates under strict noise and routing rules. It is about 20 minutes by road from the 8th.

08Aspetti pratici

AbbigliamentoWhite tie for the men and full-length gowns for the women is the published register of the evening. The debutantes wear haute couture or high-fashion dresses lent by the houses that made them, chosen and fitted in the days before, with jewelry from the ball's partner jeweler; the cavaliers wear tails. None of this is a question for anyone outside the ball, since there is no way to attend it.
MeteoLate November in Paris typically brings daytime highs around 9 to 10C and overnight lows near 4C, with 50 to 60 mm of rain across the month and short days - dark by half past four. It is a grey, damp month and the city is lit early, which is much of its appeal at this time of year.
Come spostarsiParis is well served by Metro and taxi and nothing about this evening affects the city's traffic. The 8th and 16th arrondissements are compact and walkable between the hotels, the couture houses and the Place Vendome. Ride-hailing is heavily used and surges in the evening rush.
HotelLate November is a low point in the Paris hotel year between the autumn fairs and the Christmas holidays, and rooms in the 8th, 16th and 7th are readily available at reasonable rates a few weeks out. The exception is the block of rooms taken by the ball's own participants and families, which is small and does not affect the market.
RistorantiOne of the easier weeks of the year to eat well in Paris. The serious dining rooms of the 8th and the 7th take reservations two to four weeks ahead in late November rather than the two to three months required in September or June. Truffle and game season is under way and the bistros are at their best.
Tempistiche di prenotazioneNothing about the ball can be reserved. For a Paris weekend around it, hotels two to four weeks ahead and restaurants two to four weeks are ample.
BigliettiNone. le Bal sells no tickets and there is no public admission. The organizer publishes the date, the charitable beneficiaries and, after the event, the photographs. Anyone offering entry for sale is not connected with the ball.
OspitalitàNone is published or offered. The evening is underwritten by the couture houses that lend the dresses and by the ball's partner jeweler, whose involvement is announced publicly each year. Charitable proceeds go to the beneficiaries the organizer names for that edition.

09Storia

The ball descends from a debutante presentation first staged at Versailles in 1958, at the very end of the era in which such events were a normal part of European upper-class life. Ophelie Renouard revived the format in 1992 as a press and fundraising event rather than a social rite, and ran it at the Hotel de Crillon on the Place de la Concorde from 1992 until 2012, when the hotel closed for a long renovation. Since then the ball has moved between Paris venues - hotels, private clubs and historic buildings - and dropped 'des Debutantes' from its own branding in favour of the plainer 'le Bal'. The list of participants has broadened steadily over three decades, from a largely European and American group to one that regularly includes debutantes from Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America, and the organizer has made that internationalism the ball's stated principle.

10Chi è presente

Described only in the terms the organizer publishes: the debutantes themselves, aged sixteen to twenty-two and drawn from a deliberately international list; their cavaliers, some of whom they bring and some of whom are matched by the organizer; their families; representatives of the couture houses and the jeweler that support the evening; the charitable beneficiaries; and the international fashion press, which covers the ball but does not attend as guests in the ordinary sense. No individual attendees are described in this record.
