Tennis tournaments, Laver Cup Team World gets their first win at the 2022 Laver Cup Laver Cup

The Laver Cup is a team competition invented in 2017 by Roger Federer's management company with the Brazilian businessman Jorge Paulo Lemann and Tennis Australia, and named for Rod Laver. Six players represent Team Europe and six Team World, each side led by a captain, and they play twelve matches over three days: three singles and one doubles each day. The scoring escalates, with Friday's matches worth one point, Saturday's two and Sunday's three, and the first side to thirteen takes the cup.

It carries no ranking points, appears on the ATP calendar as an official event, and is best understood as a produced spectacle. The court is black, both teams share a bench so that rivals coach each other on camera, and the whole thing is staged for television. The competition moves each year between a European and a non-European host, using existing indoor arenas: The O2 in London for 2026, the Intuit Dome outside Los Angeles for 2027.

01Why it matters

The Laver Cup solved a problem the sport had not solved before: how to make an exhibition matter. In our reading it is the most successful new property in tennis this century, and its principal weakness is the same as its strength, that everything depends on which players agree to appear.

02The week around it

The competition lands in the last full week of September, immediately after the US Open and the start of the autumn calendar, and it takes its character from the host city rather than imposing one.

03When to arrive

Arrive Thursday and stay through Sunday: three days, six sessions, and a result that is genuinely in doubt until the last of them.

04Where to stay

The competition's arenas are peripheral by design, so stay in the host city rather than near the venue.

05Access and hospitality

Tickets are sold through the organizer's site and its ticketing partner, by session: each of the three days has an afternoon and an evening session, and multi-session and full-weekend tickets are also sold.

06Where the social activity happens

Everything at the venue happens on one concourse: the arena bars, the sponsor lounges and the hospitality suites, with the hospitality areas closed to standard ticket-holders.

07Getting there

Commercial aviationDepends on the host. All five London airports serve The O2, with London City closest at fifteen minutes; Los Angeles International is about ten minutes from the Intuit Dome.
RailIn London the Jubilee line to North Greenwich stops at the arena door, fifteen minutes from London Bridge; the Thames Clipper is the more agreeable alternative.
CarArena parking exists at both venues and is heavily managed. In London driving is pointless; in Los Angeles it is close to unavoidable.
Private aviationFor London, Farnborough, Luton and Biggin Hill; for Los Angeles, Van Nuys and Hawthorne, the latter minutes from the Intuit Dome.
HelicopterNo landing at either venue. The London Heliport at Battersea and the Los Angeles downtown heliports serve their cities.

08Practicalities

DressArena dress, smarter in the evening sessions than the afternoon ones, and smarter again in the hospitality areas, where a jacket is expected.
WeatherLate September in London typically brings daily highs around 18 to 19C, about 64 to 66F, with cool evenings and a fair chance of rain; late September in the Los Angeles basin runs to highs near 27C, about 80F, with warm evenings.
Getting aroundIn London, use the Jubilee line or the river boat and avoid driving entirely; the arena empties into North Greenwich station in a controlled crush that clears within twenty minutes.
HotelsBecause the competition occupies a single arena for one weekend, it does not move a large city's hotel market.
RestaurantsThere is nothing worth eating near either arena beyond the venues' own concessions and the hospitality programme.
Reservation timingTickets go on sale roughly a year ahead and the Sunday sessions sell first; hospitality is contracted early and the organizer flags remaining inventory publicly.
TicketsSold by session through the organizer and its ticketing partner, with an afternoon and an evening session on each of the three days, plus multi-session and full-weekend options.
HospitalityThe organizer's published hospitality programme combines premium seating with all-inclusive food and drink and a dedicated hospitality space for dining and socializing.

09History

The first edition was played in Prague in 2017 with Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe as captains and Federer and Rafael Nadal on the same side of the net, an image that established the competition immediately.

10Who is there

A tennis-literate audience willing to pay for proximity: the sport's own industry of agents, sponsors and federations, corporate hospitality from the host city, a substantial contingent of travelling followers who attend every year regardless of location, and, because the format is legible to non-specialists, a broader general audience than a tour event draws.
