The Art+Film Gala is LACMA's principal fundraising evening and its argument about itself. Since 2011 the museum has used it to honor one artist and one filmmaker each year, a pairing that states the institutional position directly: that in Los Angeles the moving image belongs inside an art museum rather than beside it. The museum says the proceeds fund its initiative to make film more central to its curatorial programming, along with its wider work — exhibitions, acquisitions, education and screenings.

The evening is held on a Saturday at the start of November on the museum's campus on Wilshire Boulevard, in the Miracle Mile. Gucci has been presenting sponsor since the gala's first edition, which is unusually long for an arrangement of this kind and accounts for a good deal of how the evening looks and how it is photographed. LACMA handles tickets and table sales itself, by enquiry, and publishes no price.

The museum publishes its honorees, its co-chairs and its musical guest each year and reports the total raised afterward — the fourteenth gala, in November 2025, raised close to $6.5 million, which the museum described as a record. What the room looked like on the night is extensively covered elsewhere and is not described here.

01Perché è rilevante

Los Angeles has a benefit calendar dense with film-industry fundraising, and the Art+Film Gala is the one that belongs to a museum rather than to the industry. Its real function is institutional: LACMA has spent fifteen years arguing that film is a collecting and curatorial discipline, and the gala is both the argument and its funding mechanism. In our reading the gala's position in the international calendar rests on timing as much as on content — it falls in the first days of November, between the European autumn art fairs and the New York fall auctions, and it is the one evening of the year when the art world and the film industry are reliably in the same Los Angeles room. The museum's campus, meanwhile, is a public place that anyone can use, which is worth saying about a building most readers will encounter only as a gala backdrop.

02La settimana intorno all'evento

Early November in Los Angeles is the start of the city's awards-adjacent season, and the gala sits at the front of it. Wilshire Boulevard through the Miracle Mile is partly closed on the evening, which matters because it is a main east-west artery. For everyone else the week is an ordinary Los Angeles week: the museum's own galleries, the neighbouring Academy Museum of Motion Pictures and the La Brea Tar Pits are all open and ticketed normally, and the free outdoor sculpture on the museum's Wilshire frontage is as busy as always.

03Quando arrivare

Not applicable for a visitor; the gala is a single evening and is not sold publicly. Anyone in Los Angeles that week should use the museum in daylight, when the campus and its neighbours make a full day, and treat the Saturday evening road closures as a reason to be elsewhere.

04Dove alloggiare

For the Miracle Mile, Beverly Hills and West Hollywood are the nearest hotel clusters and ten to twenty minutes away depending on the hour. Downtown is further and cheaper; Santa Monica is a different trip altogether. The museum sits on the Purple Line extension, which changes the calculus for anyone staying downtown or in Koreatown.

05Accesso e ospitalità

LACMA sells tickets and tables for the gala but does so by enquiry through the museum, directing prospective guests to its own Art+Film address, and it publishes no price on its public pages. There is no open sale, no general admission and no livestream. Corporate participation runs through the museum's sponsorship programme, with Gucci holding the presenting position since 2011. Everything else LACMA does is ordinarily accessible: the galleries are ticketed at published museum prices, the outdoor sculpture on Wilshire is free and open at all hours, and the film programme the gala funds is the museum's own screening series.

06Dove si svolge l'attività sociale

On the museum's campus for one evening, and not in public. The surrounding public social geography is the Miracle Mile itself — the Academy Museum across the street, the restaurants along Wilshire, Sixth Street and the Fairfax District, and Hancock Park to the north — all of which carry the early-November weekend whether or not there is a gala.

07Come arrivare

Aviazione commercialeLos Angeles International (LAX) is about 30 to 50 minutes from the Miracle Mile depending on traffic; Burbank (BUR) is often quicker from the east and north.
TrenoUnion Station connects to Amtrak and Metrolink. The Metro D Line's Wilshire/Fairfax station serves the museum directly, which makes the gala's neighbourhood one of the few in Los Angeles genuinely reachable by rail.
AutoThe default in Los Angeles. The museum has its own paid parking structures on Sixth Street and Wilshire, both of which are given over to the event on gala night; Wilshire through the Miracle Mile is closed in part for the evening and traffic reroutes onto Sixth and Third Streets.
Aviazione privataVan Nuys is the busiest business-aviation field in the United States and is about 35 minutes from the Miracle Mile; Santa Monica and Hawthorne serve the west side and the south bay.

08Aspetti pratici

AbbigliamentoBlack tie as interpreted in Los Angeles, which in practice means the full range from formal to designed-for-the-photograph. The evening is partly outdoors on a campus, in November, when Los Angeles nights drop into the low teens Celsius, so a wrap is sensible.
MeteoEarly November in Los Angeles is warm and dry: daytime temperatures typically in the mid-twenties Celsius, evenings in the low teens, and very little rain before December. Santa Ana conditions can push the daytime figure considerably higher. No meteorological normals were retrieved for this record.
Come spostarsiThe Metro D Line stops at Wilshire/Fairfax beside the museum and is the fastest approach during the evening closures. Museum parking is on Sixth Street and on Wilshire and is reserved for the event on gala night. Allow well over the mapped time for any cross-town journey on a Saturday evening.
HotelNot driven by this event; early November is a moderate period in Los Angeles. Beverly Hills and West Hollywood rooms are available at a few weeks' notice outside award-season peaks.
RistorantiThe gala has little effect on the city's tables, which are numerous and dispersed. The restaurants closest to the museum along Wilshire and in the Fairfax District are busy on the evening itself and worth booking for the Saturday.
Tempistiche di prenotazioneNot applicable to the gala. Museum tickets can be bought on the day outside major exhibitions; the adjacent Academy Museum is worth booking a few days ahead at weekends.
BigliettiThere is no public ticket to the gala; tickets and table sales are arranged directly with LACMA by enquiry, at prices the museum does not publish and which are not quoted here. Admission to the museum itself is ticketed at ordinary published museum rates, with the outdoor sculpture on the Wilshire frontage free and accessible without a ticket.
OspitalitàLACMA publishes no hospitality tiers for the gala. Support is through trusteeship, patron membership and sponsorship, arranged with the museum; Gucci has held the presenting sponsorship since the gala's inception in 2011. The museum reports the total raised afterward and names the programmes it funds.

09Storia

The gala was established in 2011, with Gucci as presenting sponsor from the first edition, during the period in which LACMA was expanding both its campus and its ambitions on the Wilshire Boulevard site it shares with the La Brea Tar Pits. The honoree format has been constant: one artist, one filmmaker, announced together in the summer. The edition count runs one behind the calendar because there was no gala in 2020, which is why November 2026 is the fifteenth annual rather than the sixteenth. The museum has published a rising total through the 2020s, reaching close to $6.5 million in 2025.

10Chi è presente

LACMA's trustees, patrons and collector base; artists with work in the museum's programme; directors, producers, actors and studio leadership; the presenting sponsor's own guests; and museum and curatorial colleagues from across the United States. The mix of art-world and film-industry attendance in roughly equal measure is the gala's distinguishing feature.
