The Prima is the most closely watched single night in Italian cultural life and its date never moves. On 7 December, the feast of Sant'Ambrogio, the Teatro alla Scala opens its season with a new production, and the city organizes itself around it: the theatre is full at six in the evening, the Piazza della Scala is closed and policed, Rai broadcasts the performance live, and the reviews run on the front pages the following morning.

The house is Giuseppe Piermarini's neoclassical theatre of 1778, seating a little over two thousand across a horseshoe of six tiers. The top two are the loggione, the gallery, where the seats are cheapest and the audience is the most expert and the least forgiving in opera - the loggionisti have ended careers from up there, and they attend the Prima in force. That tension between the boxes below and the gallery above is the evening's oldest and most reliable drama.

Outside, 7 December is also a day of demonstrations. Students, unions and political groups have marched on the Piazza della Scala on opening night for decades, and the police cordon around the theatre is as much a fixture as the performance. In recent years the theatre and the city have run a parallel programme relaying the Prima free into cinemas, libraries, hospitals and public halls across Milan and Lombardy, which has turned a closed evening into something a great many people watch at the same time.

01重要な理由

No other opera house has an opening night that functions as a national event. The Prima is covered by Italian television as a live broadcast, argued about in the newspapers for a week afterward, and used by every political faction in Milan as an occasion; the performance itself is judged by an audience that includes the most demanding amateur critics in the art form. Its fixity is part of the point - 7 December is 7 December, and the date has not moved for generations, which makes it the single most reliable entry in this entire calendar. In our reading, the evening's importance to a reader of the international calendar is twofold. It is the last great formal occasion of the European year before the festive season begins, and it is the clearest example anywhere of an elite cultural event that has kept a genuinely popular constituency, in the loggione above and in the free relays across the city below.

02前後の週

Sant'Ambrogio is a public holiday in Milan and 7 December usually anchors a long weekend, which changes the whole city. The Oh bej! Oh bej! street fair runs around the Castello Sforzesco in the days either side - a market that has been held for the saint's feast since the eighteenth century and is free to walk. The Christmas lights are up on the Via Monte Napoleone and the Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the Duomo and the Galleria are at their fullest, and the shops run holiday hours. Museums and galleries schedule openings to the same week. Hotel demand across the centre rises for the holiday weekend but is nothing like the pressure of Salone del Mobile in April or fashion week in February and September. On the night itself, the Piazza della Scala is closed, the Galleria is managed, and the streets around the theatre are policed for both the arrivals and the demonstration.

03到着時期

Come for the Sant'Ambrogio weekend rather than for the performance, which almost nobody can attend. Arrive on the Friday or Saturday, take the street fair at the Castello, the Duomo roof, the Brera and the Museo del Novecento, and watch the Prima on one of the public relays or on television in a bar, which is what most of Milan does. If you do hold a ticket, be in your seat well before six - the doors close on the anthem and the house does not seat latecomers. Leave the Tuesday.

04宿泊先

The Quadrilatero and the streets around the Duomo, Brera and the Piazza della Scala put you within walking distance of the theatre and of everything else in the centre; this is the most expensive quarter and the most convenient. Brera itself is the pleasantest place to stay in Milan - narrow streets, restaurants, galleries - and is five minutes from the theatre on foot. Porta Nuova and the Isola district north of the centre are newer, cheaper and ten minutes by Metro. Navigli, southwest along the canals, is where the city drinks and is twenty minutes out. Milan is a compact, well-connected city and almost anywhere inside the ring works; the Central Station area is the exception and is worth avoiding.

05アクセスとホスピタリティ

The Prima is the hardest ticket in Italian opera and the theatre sells it publicly, which is the important point: seats are sold by the Fondazione Teatro alla Scala through its own box office and website, at the highest prices of the year, and they go almost immediately. The gallery seats in the loggione are far cheaper than the stalls and boxes and are the route by which the theatre's most committed audience gets in. La Scala also operates a same-day gallery sale for ordinary performances, which does not typically apply to the Prima. Beyond the ticketed house, the theatre and the city have in recent years relayed the opening night free into cinemas, theatres, libraries, hospitals and public halls across Milan and Lombardy, and Rai broadcasts it live nationally. Corporate and institutional boxes exist and are arranged with the foundation; nothing about them is publicly sold. No prices are quoted here because the theatre's own pages could not be read directly.

06社交活動の場

The public dimension of 7 December is on the street. The Piazza della Scala and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele beside it carry the crowd, the cameras and the demonstration; the Oh bej! Oh bej! fair around the Castello Sforzesco runs all weekend and is free; the bars of Brera and the Corso Garibaldi show the broadcast. Afterward, the restaurants around the Piazza della Scala, Via Manzoni and Brera take the late trade, and the Camparino and the historic bars in the Galleria are open. Inside the theatre, the Ridotto dei Palchi and the foyers are where the intervals happen, and the private dinners that follow are closed functions.

07アクセス方法

民間航空Milan Malpensa is 50 km northwest, 50 minutes by Malpensa Express train to Cadorna or Centrale; Linate is 8 km east, 15 minutes by taxi or on the M4 Metro line directly to the centre; Bergamo Orio al Serio is 50 km east and serves low-cost traffic.
鉄道Milano Centrale is the hub, ten minutes from the Piazza della Scala by Metro, with high-speed services to Rome in under three hours, Florence in under two, Venice in two and a half, Turin in an hour and Paris in seven. Zurich is three and a half hours through the Gotthard. Rail is the best way in from anywhere in Italy or the Alps.
車Milan's Area C congestion charge and Area B low-emission zone both cover the centre, parking is scarce and the streets around the theatre are closed on 7 December. The Metro and taxis are better in every respect.
プライベート航空Linate is the principal business-aviation airport for Milan, 15 minutes from the centre, with Malpensa and Bergamo as alternatives. Linate's proximity makes it one of the more convenient arrivals in Europe.

08実用情報

服装The Prima is formal - black tie and long dresses in the stalls and boxes, and a substantial amount of white tie - and the theatre publishes an expectation of evening dress for the opening. The loggione dresses as it pleases and always has. For ordinary performances La Scala asks for smart dress and refuses shorts and beachwear but is not otherwise strict. December in Milan is cold and often foggy, and the walk from a taxi to the door is short but the queue outside is not.
天気Early December in Milan typically brings daytime highs around 7 to 8C and overnight lows near 1C, with 60 to 70 mm of precipitation across the month and the Po valley's characteristic fog and low cloud. It is grey, damp and cold rather than snowy, and the city is lit for Christmas from late November.
市内での移動The Metro reaches the Piazza della Scala at Duomo and Montenapoleone and runs late on public holidays. On 7 December the piazza and the streets immediately around the theatre are closed to traffic for both the arrivals and the demonstration, and taxis set down some distance away. Milan is walkable across its historic centre in twenty minutes and that is usually the fastest option.
ホテルThe Sant'Ambrogio long weekend lifts hotel demand across central Milan, but the city's stock is large and its two genuine crunches are Salone del Mobile in April and the fashion weeks. Six to eight weeks' notice is generally enough for the Duomo, Brera and Quadrilatero, and less further out. Rates in December are otherwise among the year's lowest.
レストランMilan eats late and the restaurants around Brera, the Quadrilatero and the Piazza della Scala are fully booked on 7 December. Reserve, and expect to eat after the performance rather than before, since the curtain is at six. The Sant'Ambrogio weekend is a good one for the city's traditional kitchens - risotto alla milanese, cassoeula and panettone are all in season - and the Oh bej! Oh bej! fair handles the informal end.
予約時期Prima tickets go on sale from the theatre when the season is published and are gone quickly; the loggione is the realistic target and requires patience with the sale. Hotels six to eight weeks for the holiday weekend. Restaurants two to three weeks for 7 December itself.
チケットSold publicly by the Fondazione Teatro alla Scala through its own box office and website, at the season's highest prices, and they sell out. Gallery seats in the loggione are the cheapest way into the house and are the route the theatre's regular audience uses. Rai broadcasts the performance live and free across Italy, and the theatre and the city have in recent years relayed it free into cinemas, libraries and public venues across Milan and Lombardy - the practical way for a visitor to see the Prima. No prices are stated because the theatre's own pages could not be read directly.
ホスピタリティInstitutional and corporate boxes are arranged with the foundation and are not publicly sold; sponsorship of the season is acknowledged by the theatre. There is no commercial hospitality package attached to the Prima, and offers claiming to supply tickets should be checked against the theatre's own sale. The Ridotto dei Palchi and the theatre's other rooms are hired commercially outside performance nights.

09沿革

La Scala was inaugurated on 3 August 1778, built by Piermarini on the site of the deconsecrated church of Santa Maria alla Scala from which it takes its name, and opened with Salieri's Europa riconosciuta. It became the central house of the Italian repertoire under Verdi and later under Toscanini, who shaped its modern practice. The theatre was bombed in 1943 and rebuilt, reopening in 1946 with a concert conducted by Toscanini that is still remembered as a civic event. The custom of opening the season on Sant'Ambrogio rather than at the start of the autumn dates from the middle of the twentieth century and hardened into an absolute rule. A major renovation closed the house between 2002 and 2004, and it reopened on 7 December 2004 with Europa riconosciuta again, conducted by Riccardo Muti. The Prima has been televised nationally for decades, and the free public relays across Milan are a recent addition.

10参加者

The theatre's subscribers and box-holders; Italian political, industrial and cultural institutions, for whom the Prima is an official occasion; the loggionisti in the gallery, who queue for the cheapest seats and are the house's most expert listeners; the international opera profession and press; Milan's fashion and design industries, which are headquartered a few streets away; and, through the broadcast and the free relays, a national television audience of millions. The room is more Italian and more institutional than the equivalent night in New York or Vienna.
