Two minutes of racing sit at the center of a week that takes over a city. The Kentucky Derby is run over a mile and a quarter on dirt at Churchill Downs, on the first Saturday in May, as the first leg of the Triple Crown. Twenty three-year-olds go to post; the winner is draped in a garland of red roses. Churchill Downs has staged it without interruption since 1875, making it the oldest continuously held sporting event in the United States.

The day is built in layers. The infield, reached by tunnel under the track, is general admission and functions as a large open-air party from which the racing is barely visible. The grandstand and clubhouse hold reserved seating rising to the suites known as Millionaires Row; between them sits the paddock, rebuilt in 2024. The Kentucky Oaks runs on Friday and is the day Louisville considers its own; Thursday, marketed as Thurby, has become a third day. Gates open at nine and the Derby goes off around a quarter to seven, and "My Old Kentucky Home" is played as the field comes onto the track.

01لماذا يهم

No other race is as fixed in a national calendar. The first-Saturday-in-May placement has held since 1931, and the prep races from January exist to qualify horses for this one afternoon. It is the most-watched horse race in the United States and the largest single wagering day in American racing. In our reading its real distinction is social: the Derby is the one American sporting occasion that still asks people to dress for it, and the convention survives because the crowd, not the racecourse, enforces it.

02الأسبوع المحيط به

Louisville runs a two-week civic festival around the race, much of it free. It opens with Thunder Over Louisville, an airshow and fireworks display over the Ohio River drawing crowds in the hundreds of thousands; a parade, a balloon race, a steamboat race and a half marathon fill the days between. Race week brings Dawn at the Downs, morning training with public access to the backside.

03موعد الوصول

Arrive Wednesday for the week rather than the day: Thurby is the most pleasant racing of the meet, Friday's Oaks is the local occasion, Saturday is the crush. Leave Sunday. On Derby Day be through the gates before noon; queues, security and the infield tunnel all move slowly.

04أماكن الإقامة

Downtown Louisville, along Main and Fourth Streets, is the practical base: walkable, holding the week's dining and bourbon bars, with the Brown Hotel and the Seelbach as the historic landmarks. NuLu is the newer restaurant district and quieter; the Highlands and Old Louisville offer rentals and a residential feel. Minimum stays and rates unrelated to the rest of the year apply everywhere.

05الوصول والضيافة

Churchill Downs sells infield and paddock general admission, reserved seating across the grandstand and clubhouse, and dining and suite packages, directing buyers to Ticketmaster and its own sales desk. Derby Experiences is the official hospitality programme. Frontside tickets include parking at the Kentucky Exposition Center. The better reserved seats are held year over year and reach the public mainly through resale.

06مواضع النشاط الاجتماعي

The paddock rail, the Plaza with its outdoor screen, the clubhouse levels, and — for a completely different day — the infield. In the city, Whiskey Row, where the distillery bars run late; NuLu and Butchertown for the better restaurants; Bardstown Road, where Louisville itself goes.

07كيفية الوصول

الطيران التجاريLouisville Muhammad Ali International (SDF) is five miles from the track; Cincinnati and Nashville are each about two hours by road.
قطارThere is no passenger rail service to Louisville.
سيارةInterstates 64, 65 and 71 converge on the city; closures around the track begin early and residential parking is sold privately by householders.
الطيران الخاصBowman Field handles business aviation close to the city, with SDF taking larger aircraft; slot restrictions are published in advance.

08الجوانب العملية

الزي الرسميThe convention is enforced by the crowd more than the gate, but Churchill Downs sets requirements in the reserved areas: jackets and collared shirts in the clubhouse and dining levels, no denim, shorts or athletic wear in the upper reserved sections, published by location each year. Women wear a hat — a real one, often extravagant — with a dress or suit, and the track's style guidance describes bold color as the norm. Men wear a lightweight suit, very often seersucker, with a bow tie. On Oaks Friday the convention shifts to pink for the day's breast cancer campaign. The infield has no dress code and behaves accordingly.
الطقسEarly May in Louisville is warm and humid, with afternoon highs typically in the mid-twenties Celsius and a real chance of thunderstorms. The Derby has been run on a fast track in sunshine and in heavy mud in consecutive years, and there is limited shelter in the infield.
التنقل والتوجهRide-hailing works in the morning and collapses in the evening, with designated zones a long walk from the gates. The TARC shuttle and the Exposition Center park-and-ride included with frontside tickets are the reliable options.
الفنادقThe tightest hotel market of the Louisville year, with two- and three-night minimums standard and rooms held a year ahead. Short-term rentals absorb substantial demand.
المطاعمRestaurants are booked out months ahead along Main Street, in NuLu and in the Highlands, and many run fixed menus on Oaks and Derby days.
توقيت الحجزReserved seating and Derby Experiences packages are released in the autumn, and the better locations do not reach general sale. Hotels take bookings up to a year ahead.
التذاكرSold through the official site and Ticketmaster, spanning infield general admission, paddock and Plaza general admission, and reserved seating in the grandstand, clubhouse and suites, with a sales line for group and premium enquiries. Frontside tickets include Exposition Center parking. Thurby and the earlier days of the spring meet are far cheaper and much easier to enter.
الضيافةDerby Experiences is the official programme, combining seating with hospitality and, in some tiers, accommodation and transfers. Churchill Downs also sells dining by level and private suites; the highest tiers are sold on application. The constraint is price and inventory, not membership.

09التاريخ

Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr. founded the race in 1875 with the Epsom Derby and the Grand Prix de Paris in mind. The first running drew about 10,000 people over a mile and a half; it was shortened to a mile and a quarter in 1896, and the twin spires went up in 1895. The mint julep became the official drink in 1938. Churchill Downs has spent two decades rebuilding the historic frontside, most visibly the paddock completed for the 150th running in 2024.

10من يتواجد هناك

Owners, breeders and the Kentucky bloodstock industry; trainers and the connections of the twenty runners; corporate hospitality from the sponsors and the bourbon industry; a large national leisure crowd; and Louisville itself, which turns out for the Oaks. The infield crowd skews young and regional and is a separate event inside the same fence.
