The evening that opens the Palm Beach season: a diplomatic and military charity ball at The Breakers, held for the American Red Cross. Invitation only.
An event page tells you when it happens (with how sure we are of the date), why it matters, how the week around it feels, when to arrive and leave, where people stay, how access works, and which events come before and after it on the circuit.
The International Red Cross Ball is run by the Palm Beach & Treasure Coast Chapter of the American Red Cross and held at The Breakers, the oceanfront resort at the eastern end of Palm Beach. Its two distinguishing features are both in the name. It is international: the chapter's published figures count dozens of serving and former ambassadors in the room, and the committee structure includes a United States Ambassador Chairman and an International Ambassador Chairman as standing positions. And it is a Red Cross event in the full institutional sense, built around the organization's historic relationship with the United States armed forces — the chapter describes the evening as bringing together global ambassadors, distinguished guests and the nation's military, and recent editions have included a keynote address and an appearance by a service band.
It is also, by local convention, the event that opens the Palm Beach season. The chapter says so itself, and the timing supports it: the ball falls in the first half of January, before the Wellington equestrian circuit is properly under way and before the art and boat shows arrive.
Access is closed. The chapter's event page offers no ticket and no price, only a sponsorship contact, and the host committee — co-chairmen, honorary chairmen, the two ambassador chairmen and a Tiffany Circle ball committee, the Tiffany Circle being the Red Cross's own community of women philanthropists — is published as the evening's organizing structure rather than as a sale. The chapter reports the total raised afterward: more than $2.8 million in January 2026, from more than 490 guests.
01Why it matters
Most charity balls raise money for a local cause; this one raises money for a national disaster-relief organization and does it in a room assembled on diplomatic lines. That combination is unusual and it is the reason the ball has outlasted most of its contemporaries on the Palm Beach calendar. In our reading its significance is largely calendrical: Palm Beach's season has a recognized starting gun, and this is it, which matters to the hotels, the restaurants and the other committees that schedule around it. The sums are modest against the American benefit-gala scale — low single-figure millions rather than the tens of millions raised in New York — and the ball's value to the Red Cross is as much about standing as about revenue. Nothing about the evening is available to a visitor, and the honest advice is to treat the date as a marker for when Palm Beach wakes up rather than as something to attend.
02The week around it
The first half of January is when Palm Beach refills. The restaurants that ran short hours through the autumn return to full service, the Worth Avenue shops and galleries reopen their season programmes, and the committee calendar that runs through to April starts issuing invitations. The ball itself occupies one evening at The Breakers and changes nothing outside the resort's own approach roads. What changes in that fortnight is the island's occupancy, and the ball is the conventional signal for it.
03When to arrive
Not applicable for a visitor; the ball is one invitation-only evening. For the island, the second week of January is a good time to arrive for other reasons — the weather is at its most reliable, the season's exhibitions and restaurants are open, and the serious crowding does not begin until February.
04Where to stay
The Breakers itself is the ball's venue and the east end of the island's landmark; the Palm Beach hotels along South Ocean Boulevard and around Worth Avenue are the other in-town options and are small and expensive in season. West Palm Beach, across the Intracoastal, has the supply and the Brightline station, and is five to fifteen minutes from the island by bridge. Wellington, inland, is where the equestrian season's visitors base themselves.
05Access and hospitality
There is no public access and no published ticket price. The chapter's own event page directs prospective supporters to a sponsorship contact at the Red Cross and offers nothing else; the host committee is published as a list of positions held rather than as a purchase path. Corporate and individual sponsorship is arranged directly with the Palm Beach & Treasure Coast Chapter. The Red Cross's Tiffany Circle, its giving society for women, has a standing ball committee and is the clearest published route into the event's organization. For anyone outside that, the chapter's public channel is a donation.
06Where the social activity happens
Inside The Breakers for one evening, and this record describes no part of it. Palm Beach's public social geography in that week is Worth Avenue and the galleries along it, the restaurants of Royal Poinciana Way and the Royal Poinciana Plaza, the Lake Trail along the Intracoastal, and across the bridge the museum and dining districts of West Palm Beach and the Norton Museum of Art.

09History
The ball is long-established — the 2027 edition is the sixty-sixth — and the chapter describes it as a historic event, but we did not find a source that states the year of the first ball or who founded it, so founded_year is left null. Its modern history includes a three-year interruption: the 62nd ball, in March 2023, was the first after a pandemic hiatus, and the chapter reported then that it drew more than 400 guests, raised nearly $1.5 million and brought a record number of serving ambassadors. It returned to its January slot the following year and the published totals have risen in each edition since, to $2.45 million in January 2025 and more than $2.8 million in January 2026.
10Who is there
Serving and former ambassadors and members of the diplomatic corps, which is the feature the chapter emphasizes most; senior figures from the United States armed forces, including decorated service members the ball honors; the Red Cross's national leadership and its Tiffany Circle membership; and Palm Beach's own philanthropic and committee community, which supplies the chairmen and most of the room.

The American Red Cross South Florida Region's event page for the ball reads '66th International Red Cross Ball / Friday, January 8, 2027 / The Breakers Palm Beach / 1 South County Road, Palm Beach, FL 33480'. The chapter's host committee for the 66th ball was published as of 3 September 2026. The only route the page offers is sponsorship, arranged with the chapter. |

The chapter reports that it raised more than $2.8 million for the American Red Cross and welcomed more than 490 guests, including ambassadors and dignitaries from abroad and decorated members of the United States armed forces. The chapter's own page now carries a 65th-ball photo gallery without repeating the date, so the date here comes from reporting of the chapter's announcement rather than from a dated organizer page. |
