The dominant experience is public: general admission in the infield, the ticketed dance-music venue in the third turn, and the grandstands that ring the entire two and a half miles.

Carmel and Zionsville, further north, are quieter suburbs with newer hotels. Everything within a reasonable distance applies minimum-stay requirements over the weekend.

The Speedway was built in 1909 as a proving ground for the American motor industry and surfaced with more than three million bricks after its first races proved lethal. The first five-hundred-mile race was run in 1911. The event survived two wars, a period of near-dereliction, and the 1990s split in American open-wheel racing that damaged the sport's audience for a decade. The race has been scheduled specifically for the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend since 1974. Its long collision with the Monaco Grand Prix, run on the same afternoon, ended when Formula 1 moved Monaco to June in 2026, so the two events no longer compete for attention.
