The BNP Paribas Open occupies a purpose-built site in the Coachella Valley, twenty minutes east of Palm Springs. The Indian Wells Tennis Garden opened in 2000 with twenty-nine courts and a main stadium seating 16,100, the second largest tennis arena anywhere; a second 8,000-seat stadium followed in 2014. Larry Ellison bought the tournament in 2009 and has spent continuously on it since.

It is a combined ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 played over twelve days with 96-player singles draws, so the field is deeper and the schedule longer than at any event outside the majors. The organizer reported 493,440 admissions in 2024. Grounds access covers a large share of the tennis, practice sessions are open, and heat, wind and the need for a car are the only real constraints.

01Why it matters

Indian Wells is where the tour's spring reset happens, four weeks after the Australian Open and immediately before Miami, and the combined draw makes it the year's first full gathering of both tours in one place. In our reading it is the best-run tournament in professional tennis and the least socially consequential of the big ones, and both facts come from the same source, an owner spending on the event itself rather than on the week around it.

02The week around it

The Coachella Valley in early March is at the peak of its winter season, which means the tournament arrives into a place already full: the golf courses are at their busiest, Palm Springs is between Modernism Week in February and the music festivals in April, and the resort corridor from Palm Desert to La Quinta is running at capacity.

03When to arrive

The first Wednesday to Friday is the strongest stretch: both draws are still wide, sixteen courts are running, and a grounds ticket buys a full day of top-hundred tennis.

04Where to stay

The resort corridor along Highway 111 through Indian Wells, Palm Desert and La Quinta is the natural base, with the nearest hotels a few minutes from the gates and shuttle services during the tournament.

05Access and hospitality

The organizer sells grounds passes for the early rounds, which admit the holder to the outside courts and the practice areas, and separate day and night session tickets for Stadium 1, with Stadium 2 included in some ticket types and sold separately in others.

06Where the social activity happens

On site, the public gathering points are the plaza between the two stadiums, the food and wine concessions along the main walkway, and the practice courts, all of which are open to grounds-pass holders.

07Getting there

Commercial aviationPalm Springs International is twenty to thirty minutes away and adds seasonal service in March; Los Angeles is about two and a half hours by road.
RailEffectively none. Amtrak calls at Palm Springs infrequently and at inconvenient hours.
CarA car is required. The Tennis Garden has large paid lots with shuttles, and Highway 111 backs up at session change.
Private aviationPalm Springs International has several fixed-base operators; Jacqueline Cochran Regional at Thermal is the quieter alternative, Bermuda Dunes the closest.
HelicopterNo scheduled service and no landing at the venue; charter is available into the valley's airports.

08Practicalities

DressDesert casual throughout: linen, sunglasses, a hat that stays on in wind.
WeatherEarly to mid March in the Coachella Valley typically brings daily highs around 26 to 29C, roughly 79 to 84F, with very low humidity, cold nights near 10 to 12C, and almost no rain.
Getting aroundDrive and allow extra time at session change; the shuttle from the outer lots is efficient but the queue after a night session is long.
HotelsMarch is the valley's peak season independent of the tennis, so rates are already high and the tournament tightens the corridor nearest the venue.
RestaurantsEl Paseo and Palm Springs' downtown are the two clusters worth booking, and both take reservations two to three weeks out during the tournament.
Reservation timingTickets go on sale from the preceding summer and autumn, with the second-weekend stadium sessions the first to go.
TicketsGrounds passes cover the outside courts and practice areas in the early rounds. Stadium 1 sells separate day and night sessions; Stadium 2 access varies by ticket type.
HospitalityThe tournament sells official hospitality directly, comprising on-site clubs, suites and reserved stadium seating, generally packaged with dining. No public tariff was readable in this pass.

09History

The tournament dates to 1976 and spent its early years moving around the Southwest, at Tucson, Rancho Mirage and La Quinta, before settling in Indian Wells in 1987 under its founders, the former players Charlie Pasarell and Raymond Moore.

10Who is there

Southern Californian weekend visitors, the Coachella Valley's winter residents, the American tennis industry in full, sponsor and corporate guests entertained on site and at the valley's golf clubs, and a modest international contingent that mostly belongs to the tour itself.
