For four days every August the runway at Gstaad Airport in Saanen stops being an airport. The grass beside it becomes a polo field, a village of tents and a VIP marquee goes up along one side, and four teams of 14-goal handicap - sixteen players from Argentina, Switzerland and elsewhere, with around 120 horses between them - play qualifying matches, semi-finals and a Sunday final at 1,000 metres with the Saanenland peaks behind the goalmouths.

The format is compact and easy to follow. Thursday is qualifying, two matches from early afternoon. Friday is given over to the players' parade, which runs through the Gstaad promenade in the late afternoon and is the tournament's one properly public set piece. Saturday brings both semi-finals and a gala dinner in the VIP tent. Sunday has the third-place match at 13:30, the final at 15:00 and the prize giving at 16:30. The Polo Village opens at 11:00 on match days.

What distinguishes it from the grass tournaments of England is the setting and the scale. This is a village event with international sponsorship rather than a four-week campaign: one field, four teams, a weekend. The mountain light and the altitude make the polo look faster than it is, and the whole thing is watchable from the surround of the field without ceremony.

01Pourquoi c'est important

Gstaad's summer is quieter than its winter, and this is the fixture that fills it. The tournament has run since 1996 and reaches its 30th edition in 2027, long enough to have become the anchor of the Saanenland's August. It also carries an unusual concentration of sponsorship for a 14-goal event: a watchmaker as title partner, a champagne house, an aviation group, a car marque and the Gstaad Palace behind the catering. In our reading its importance is local and seasonal rather than sporting - the polo is good club-level medium goal, not the high goal of Cowdray - but as an entry point to the Alps in summer it has few equals, because almost all of it can be watched for nothing.

02La semaine environnante

Mid-August is the top of Gstaad's summer. The Menuhin Festival is in the middle of its run in the churches and tents at Saanen and Gstaad, the hiking and cycling season is at full strength on the Wispile and the Eggli, and the village promenade is as busy as it gets outside the Christmas fortnight. The polo adds four days of traffic and a visible tented encampment on the airfield, five minutes from the centre by road and a pleasant forty-minute walk along the Saane. What is public is a lot: the Polo Village, the field surround, the players' parade through the promenade on Friday afternoon with the horses walked through the middle of the village, and the whole atmosphere of the airfield on match days. What is not public is the VIP tent and the Saturday gala, both sold in advance and both sold out well before the tournament in 2026. The resort's own week continues around it - the Menuhin concerts in the evenings, the mountain restaurants at lunch, and the Saanen and Gstaad markets - so a visitor who came for the polo will find the village doing several other things at once.

03Quand arriver

Arrive Thursday or Friday. Thursday's qualifying is the quietest and best-value polo, Friday's parade is the day the tournament belongs to the village, and the weekend carries the crowd. Sunday finishes with the prize giving at half past four, which leaves the evening free and makes a Monday departure the natural one. Anyone combining this with a Menuhin Festival concert should check that calendar first, since the festival's own weekend programme is the harder ticket.

04Où séjourner

Gstaad village itself, along the promenade and the slopes above it, is the obvious base and puts the airfield within a short drive or a long walk; the Gstaad Palace on its hill and the Alpina above the village are the landmarks. Saanen, one stop down the valley and closer to the field, is quieter and cheaper with a beautiful old centre. Schonried, Saanenmoser and Gsteig are the other valley villages, all on the MOB railway line and all suited to visitors who want the Alps more than the promenade. Rougemont, over the language border into the Vaud, is ten minutes away and a different country in temperament.

05Accès et hospitalité

The organizer sells only VIP tent places, and publishes their prices: CHF 420 per person for the Saturday or Sunday lunch buffet, prepared by the Gstaad Palace kitchen, with table seating for eight and access to the VIP terrace over the field; and CHF 490 per person for the Saturday gala night, a served dinner with entertainment and a move to the Gstaad Palace dancefloor at midnight. Both sold out for 2026, and the organizer states that bookings cannot be cancelled, exchanged or refunded, including if the event is cancelled. No general-admission ticket is listed on the reservation page: spectators watch from the Polo Village and the field surround, which is how most of the crowd sees the tournament.

06Où se déroule l'activité sociale

The Polo Village on the airfield during the day, with the sponsor tents, the food stands and the terrace along the field. In the village, the Gstaad promenade and its terraces, the bar and Grand Hall of the Gstaad Palace, and the restaurants at Saanen carry the evenings. The Friday parade puts the tournament into the centre of Gstaad for an hour. Beyond that, August in the Saanenland is a mountain-restaurant culture rather than a nightlife one, and the pull after the final is toward the valley and the huts rather than toward any single bar.

07Comment s'y rendre

Aviation commercialeGeneva is about two and a quarter hours by road and is the usual arrival airport; Zurich and Bern-Belp are alternatives at roughly three hours and one and a quarter hours respectively.
RailThe Montreux Oberland Bernois line runs from Montreux up through Rougemont to Gstaad and Saanen, and the GoldenPass route from Interlaken and Zweisimmen comes in from the other side. Gstaad and Saanen stations are both a short taxi from the airfield. Rail is slower than driving but the approach from Montreux is the best part of the journey.
VoitureFrom Geneva by the motorway to Aigle and over the Col des Mosses, or from Bern via Spiez and Zweisimmen. Roads are good and open in August. Parking at the airfield is signposted for the tournament; the village itself has underground parking and is largely traffic-calmed.
Aviation privéeGstaad Airport at Saanen is the field the tournament is played on and normally handles business aviation for the region, with Air Glaciers, Air Sarina and Haute Aviation among the based operators - but flight operations are affected while the tournament occupies the site. Bern-Belp and Sion are the practical alternatives that week, with Geneva for larger aircraft.
HélicoptèreHelicopter transfer from Geneva and Bern into Saanen is a common arrival for the region, subject to the same tournament-week constraints on the airfield.

08Informations pratiques

Tenue vestimentaireAlpine summer smart. Linen, loafers, sunglasses and a jacket for the evening, when the temperature at 1,000 metres drops sharply after the sun goes behind the ridge. The VIP tent lunches lean dressier and the Saturday gala is a jacket-and-dress evening. On the field surround, walking clothes are entirely normal.
MétéoLate August in the Saanenland gives daytime highs around 21 to 23C at valley level, nights near 10 to 12C, and a genuine chance of afternoon thunderstorms building over the peaks. August is one of the wetter months in the Bernese Oberland, so a jacket in the bag is sensible even on a clear morning.
Se déplacerThe MOB railway and the local Postbus network cover the valley well and most hotels issue a guest card that includes them. Gstaad to the airfield is a five-minute drive, a fifteen-minute bus ride or a forty-minute walk along the river. Driving to the field on Sunday is the slowest of the three.
HôtelsAugust is high season across the Saanenland and the village hotels fill for the polo weekend and for Menuhin Festival concert nights. Two to three months' notice is normally enough; the Palace and the Alpina go earlier. Saanen, Schonried and Rougemont hold availability longer and are five to fifteen minutes away.
RestaurantsGstaad's restaurants and the mountain huts above the village book up on summer weekends, and the polo Saturday is the busiest evening of the month. On the field, catering is the Polo Village stands or the VIP tent buffet. The valley's own cooking - Berner Platte, alpine cheeses from the Saanen dairies, fondue even in August at altitude - is worth the detour to Gsteig or Lauenen.
Délais de réservationVIP lunch and gala places were sold out for 2026 before the tournament, so treat them as a spring booking. Village hotels for the third weekend of August should be held two to three months ahead; Menuhin Festival tickets for the same weekend go earlier still.
BilletsThe organizer's reservation page offers only the VIP tent categories, priced at CHF 420 per person for the Saturday or Sunday lunch and CHF 490 for the Saturday gala night, both taxes included and both sold out for 2026. No general-admission ticket is published; spectators watch from the Polo Village and around the field. The organizer states there are no cancellations, exchanges, rebookings or refunds.
HospitalitéThe VIP tent is the organizer's own product: tables of eight on a terrace over the field, a buffet lunch by the Gstaad Palace on the Saturday and Sunday, and a served gala dinner on the Saturday evening that ends with a move to the Palace. Title and category sponsors host their own guests within it. Pets are not admitted to the tent.

09Historique

Polo came to the Saanen airfield in 1996, at a point when Gstaad was extending its summer programme beyond the Swiss Open tennis in July. The airfield, in use since the middle of the twentieth century and modernized after the Airfield Cooperative Gstaad-Saanenland took it over in 2011, is an unusual host: it has a single 1,400-metre asphalt runway, sits at 1,001 metres, and is one of the principal business-aviation fields serving the Bernese Oberland. The tournament has kept its four-team, 14-goal shape throughout, missing 2020 and 2021, and returned from 2022 without changing the formula. Gstaad Palace has won it; so, in 2026, did Albinati Aeronautics.

10Qui s'y trouve

Gstaad's summer residents and chalet owners, Swiss and German visitors from Bern, Zurich and Basel, the sponsors' guests, the international polo community that plays the European medium goal, and a large family and day-trip crowd from the Saanenland and the Vaud. More local and less professional than the British high goal, and much more open than its brand roster suggests.
