The oldest charity wine auction: a Burgundy estate built from five centuries of bequests, sold by the barrel under the covered market at Beaune.

The Hôtel-Dieu at Beaune was founded in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, chancellor of Burgundy, as a hospital for the poor, and it was paid for from the start by gifts of vineyard. Five and a half centuries of donations and bequests have left the Hospices with a domaine of more than sixty hectares, most of it grand cru and premier cru, farmed by the institution's own vignerons and sold every year to fund the modern hospital that succeeded the almshouse. The public charity sale has been held annually since 1859.
What is sold is not bottles but barrels. Each of the domaine's fifty-odd cuvées is offered in 228-litre pièces of the current vintage, still in wood and months away from being finished. The buyer takes the barrel and arranges its raising and bottling with a Burgundy négociant, which is why the room contains as many merchants as collectors. Prices habitually run above what the same wine would fetch commercially, because a share of what is being bought is the charity.
The sale takes place under the Halles, the nineteenth-century covered market across the square from the Hôtel-Dieu, on the third Sunday of November at half past one. Sotheby's has run it since 2021 and its mandate has been renewed to 2030. Bids are taken online, by telephone, in writing and in the room, though Sotheby's states plainly that seats in the room are available on request only and that all bidders must register in advance.
01Neden önemlidir
This is the wine world's oldest and most public price signal for the new Burgundy vintage, and it arrives about six months before the trade will taste the wines properly. What the barrels make on the third Sunday of November colors the conversation about the vintage for the rest of the year, fairly or not. It also matters as a piece of continuity: a fifteenth-century hospital still funding itself from the vineyards it was given, in front of several thousand people, with the money accounted for publicly. Our reading is that the auction is best understood as a civic occasion that happens to set prices rather than a commercial sale with a charitable veneer — the town shuts around it, the region's growers turn out for it, and the Pièce des Présidents, the single barrel given to a named cause each year, is the part everyone actually watches.

Les Trois Glorieuses gives the weekend its shape. On the Saturday evening the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin holds its black-tie dinner in the cellars of the Château du Clos de Vougeot; on the Sunday the auction fills the Halles and the square around it; on the Monday the growers of Meursault hold La Paulée, a long lunch to which each guest brings a bottle. The town runs its own programme from the Friday — a fair, cellar and estate tastings, a food market and folk parades — and the Hôtel-Dieu stays open to visitors throughout. Beaune has fewer than 22,000 residents and the weekend is the busiest of its year; the ring road inside the ramparts is closed in places and the village restaurants along the Côte take bookings months ahead.
03Ne zaman varılır
Arrive on the Friday if you want the town's programme and the cellar tastings, which are the part of the weekend genuinely open to anyone. Saturday is for the domaine visits along the Côte and, for those with an invitation, for Clos de Vougeot. Sunday is the auction. Leaving on the Monday afternoon, after the Paulée has started and the roads have emptied, is the civilized ending; leaving Sunday night means competing with everyone else for the same trains.

Inside Beaune's ramparts is the obvious base and the smallest supply — a handful of hotels and a good many rooms above restaurants, all of them taken early. The villages along the Côte de Beaune, from Savigny-lès-Beaune round to Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet, are ten to twenty minutes by car and are where much of the trade actually stays; the Château de Gilly and the hotels near Nuits-Saint-Georges serve the Clos de Vougeot end. Dijon, forty minutes north, has real hotel capacity and a train to Beaune, and is the fallback when Burgundy is full. Beaune's hotels are small and family-run rather than international; the trade-off is charm against choice.

The auction itself is the least accessible part of the weekend: Sotheby's states that seats in the Halles are available on request only and that registration is mandatory for all bidders, by email to the sale's dedicated address. Bidding is possible online, by telephone, in writing or in the room. Everything around the sale is far more open. The Hôtel-Dieu museum is ticketed and open to the public, the town's tastings and market are open to anyone who turns up, and several domaines along the Côte open their cellars for the weekend. The Clos de Vougeot dinner and La Paulée de Meursault are private functions of the Confrérie and of the Meursault growers respectively; neither is sold to the public.
06Sosyal faaliyetin gerçekleştiği yer
The Place de la Halle and the Place Carnot in the center of Beaune carry the crowd all weekend, with the cafés around them full from mid-morning. The cellars beneath the town — several of the old négociant houses open theirs for tastings — are where the wine trade spends the Friday and Saturday. Out on the Côte, the villages of Meursault, Puligny, Pommard and Volnay hold their own tables and open doors. The Cité des Climats et Vins de Bourgogne on the edge of Beaune runs a public programme through the weekend. None of this requires a connection; a good deal of it requires a booking.

Rolin's foundation was a working hospital until the 1970s, and the Hôtel-Dieu with its glazed polychrome roof, its Great Hall of the Poor and Rogier van der Weyden's Last Judgement altarpiece is now a museum. The vineyard endowment grew by donation across five centuries, which is why the domaine's holdings are scattered across the Côte de Beaune and the Côte de Nuits in small parcels rather than concentrated. Public auction of the wine began in 1859 and grew steadily into the fixture around which Burgundy's autumn calendar is organized. Christie's ran the sale from 2005 to 2020 and Sotheby's has run it since 2021; before that it was conducted by the traditional French system of the candle auction, which the town still refers to.
10Kimler orada
Burgundy négociants and growers, who do much of the actual buying; wine merchants and importers from across Europe, the United States and Asia; restaurateurs and sommeliers; private collectors, a good many of them bidding remotely; the region's civic and agricultural establishment; and several thousand visitors who come for the town's weekend rather than the sale. The room is smaller and more professional than the crowd outside it.
