Hong Kong sells twice a year, and the spring season is the one that has been pulled hardest into a single week. Christie's and Sotheby's now schedule their modern and contemporary evening sales into the last days of March, alongside Art Basel Hong Kong, so that the same collectors, dealers and advisers make one trip rather than two. In 2026 Christie's sold on March 27 and Sotheby's on March 29, with Sotheby's exhibition open from March 18.

Both houses have rebuilt their Hong Kong operations in the last three years, and the buildings are part of the story. Christie's Asia-Pacific headquarters occupies four floors of The Henderson at 2 Murray Road, a Zaha Hadid Architects tower completed in 2024, which gave the house its first year-round saleroom and gallery in the region in place of a twice-yearly rented hall. Sotheby's Maison opened in Landmark Chater in July 2024, a two-level, 24,000-square-foot space designed by MVRDV with a ground-floor gallery and a first-floor store selling art and objects outright. Both are open to the public during exhibition hours and both sit within a few minutes' walk of each other in Central.

The evening sales are the headline, but they are a small part of the fortnight. Around them sit Chinese ceramics and works of art, classical and modern Chinese paintings, high jewelry, watches and wine — the categories that made Hong Kong an auction center in the first place and that still account for much of its volume.

01Pourquoi c'est important

Hong Kong is where the international houses test Asian demand in public, and the spring week is the year's first full reading of it. The evening sale totals are quoted across the region as a proxy for collector confidence, and because the sales are held in the same week as the fair, the week doubles as the Asian art market's annual meeting. The scale is smaller than New York's — reporting by ARTnews put the 2026 spring marquee total at $164.9 million against the hundreds of millions a single New York evening sale can produce — but the audience is not the same audience, and that is the point. Our reading is that the recent investment in permanent buildings has changed the week's character more than the totals have: with year-round salerooms in Central, both houses now program exhibitions between sales, and the March week has become the peak of a continuous calendar rather than a fortnight-long visit.

02La semaine environnante

Art Basel Hong Kong runs at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai across the same days and is the reason most international visitors are in town; it is ticketed and open to the public. Art Central sets up nearby. The galleries in Central — the Pedder Building, H Queen's and the streets around Hollywood Road — open their strongest shows of the year and stay open late, and M+ and the Hong Kong Palace Museum in West Kowloon program against the week. Central is busy in the evenings and the harbor crossings are slow at rush hour, but the city at large is not disrupted.

03Quand arriver

Come in on the Tuesday before the first evening sale. That gives you the pre-sale exhibitions at both houses while they are quiet, the fair's opening days, and the gallery openings in Central. Leave on the Sunday if you want the fair at the weekend, or on the Monday after the last evening sale if you are following the market rather than the fair.

04Où séjourner

Central puts you inside the week: both salerooms, the Pedder Building galleries and the Airport Express terminus are within a few minutes on foot, and the Mandarin Oriental, the Landmark Mandarin and the Four Seasons are the landmarks people give directions by. Admiralty and Wan Chai are closer to the convention center and cheaper. Tsim Sha Tsui, across the harbor, trades a ferry or a tunnel crossing for the view and for proximity to the West Kowloon museums; it is a real option if the fair matters more than the salerooms.

05Accès et hospitalité

Pre-sale exhibitions at both houses are free and open to the public during published hours — Sotheby's Maison lists eleven to seven on weekdays and Saturdays, eleven to six on Sundays and public holidays — and the buildings themselves are worth the visit. Evening sale rooms are small and access is controlled by the houses through bidder registration and client relationships; seats are not sold. Both houses stream their evening sales publicly online. Bidder registration requires identification and financial references filed several days ahead. Art Basel Hong Kong sells public tickets separately. No hospitality programme is published by any of the houses.

06Où se déroule l'activité sociale

Central after six: the hotel bars along Ice House Street and Queen's Road, the restaurants in the Landmark and Prince's Building, the older rooms on Wyndham Street and the newer ones climbing Hollywood Road. The Pedder Building and H Queen's hold gallery receptions on the fair's opening nights and both are open to anyone who walks in. Across the harbor, the M+ terrace and the Hong Kong Palace Museum draw a different and quieter crowd. Star Ferry between the two sides is still the pleasantest way to move at that hour.

07Comment s'y rendre

Aviation commercialeHong Kong International (HKG) at Chek Lap Kok is one of Asia's principal hubs; the Airport Express reaches Hong Kong Station in Central in about 24 minutes and connects directly into the Landmark and IFC complexes.
RailThe high-speed line from Guangzhou, Shenzhen and further into the mainland terminates at Hong Kong West Kowloon, next to M+ and the Palace Museum and about fifteen minutes from Central.
VoitureTaxis are cheap and plentiful but the harbor tunnels are slow at peak hours; Central itself is best covered on foot and by the network of covered walkways.
Aviation privéeBusiness aviation operates through Hong Kong International with dedicated handling; slot and parking pressure is real during fair week, and some operators position aircraft in Shenzhen or Macau.
HélicoptèreScheduled helicopter services run between Hong Kong and Macau from the Sky Shuttle terminal at the Shun Tak Centre in Sheung Wan; there is no general helicopter commuting within the territory.
MarinasThe Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club at Kellett Island and the marinas at Gold Coast and Clearwater Bay handle private yachts, though Hong Kong is not a superyacht destination in the Mediterranean sense.

08Informations pratiques

Tenue vestimentaireBusiness dress at the evening sales; Hong Kong is warm and humid in late March, so lightweight suiting and a habit of moving between air-conditioned buildings. Exhibitions and the fair have no dress code. Rain is likely at some point in the week.
MétéoLate March in Hong Kong is warm, humid and often overcast, with sea fog and drizzle common on the harbor and temperatures climbing through the twenties Celsius. It is not the settled, clear weather of the autumn season. We did not retrieve Hong Kong Observatory normals for this record, so no figures are given.
Se déplacerThe two salerooms are a five-minute walk apart in Central, and the covered walkway system connects Landmark Chater, Murray Road and the Airport Express terminus without going outside. The MTR Island line runs from Central to the convention center at Wan Chai in two stops. Taxis after the evening sales are slow around Central; the walkways are quicker.
HôtelsArt Basel week is the single busiest week of Hong Kong's hotel year, and demand is driven by the fair rather than the sales. Central hotels fill first and rates rise sharply for the last week of March. Book two to three months ahead for Central; Wan Chai, Admiralty and Kowloon stay available longer.
RestaurantsCentral restaurants are fully booked on the fair's opening nights and on the two evening-sale nights, and the good tables go a month out. Lunch is straightforward. Kowloon and the older Wan Chai rooms take bookings much later and are ten minutes away by tunnel or ferry.
Délais de réservationHotels two to three months ahead for Central during fair week. Restaurant tables three to four weeks out for the sale nights. Art Basel Hong Kong tickets go on sale months ahead and the preview days are limited. Bidder registration should be filed at least a week before the sale, earlier for a first-time buyer.
BilletsThe auction exhibitions at both houses are free and unticketed during published hours. Evening sale room access is not sold; it follows from bidder registration or an existing client relationship, and both houses stream the sales free online with results published immediately after. Art Basel Hong Kong sells its own public tickets, including day passes, through the fair's website.
HospitalitéNeither house publishes a hospitality programme for Hong Kong. Collector dinners and private views ahead of public opening are arranged by the specialist departments for their own clients. The fair's VIP programme is administered through exhibiting galleries and is not for sale. The free exhibitions, the public fair days and the West Kowloon museums make a complete week without either.

09Historique

Sotheby's began selling in Hong Kong in 1973 and Christie's in 1986, initially in Chinese ceramics, jade and classical painting, categories in which the city had established buyers and a free port. Contemporary art followed later, and by the 2010s the twice-yearly Hong Kong sales had become the third pillar of both houses after New York and London. For most of that time the sales were staged in rented convention halls. The move to permanent premises — Christie's into The Henderson, Sotheby's into Landmark Chater, both in 2024 — marked the end of that arrangement. The alignment with Art Basel Hong Kong, which itself grew out of the older ART HK fair, is more recent still and reflects a deliberate compression of the Asian season into one journey.

10Qui s'y trouve

Collectors from Hong Kong, mainland China, Taiwan, Korea, Japan and Southeast Asia; a substantial contingent of European and American dealers and advisers who come for the fair and stay for the sales; the houses' Asian specialist departments; and the private banking and family-office community that services regional collections. The Chinese art and jewelry sales draw a partly separate, more local audience from the contemporary evening sales.
