Three weeks of sales in Central, from jewelry and watches in mid-September through the art evening sales to the Chinese and Asian art rounds in early October.

Where the Hong Kong spring compresses into a single week around a fair, the autumn season spreads out. It opens in the third week of September with high jewelry and watches — Sotheby's lists High Jewelry on September 17 and Important Watches on September 18–19 in 2026 — moves to the modern and contemporary evening sales in the last days of the month, and finishes in the first week of October with Chinese ceramics, works of art and classical painting. Nearly a month passes between the first hammer and the last.
That shape reflects what Hong Kong actually sells. The contemporary evening sale gets the headlines, but the Chinese art sales are the older business and still bring a partly different set of buyers, many of them travelling from the mainland around the National Day holiday at the start of October. The jewelry and watch weeks sit at the front because they draw yet another audience again.
Both international houses now sell from permanent premises in Central, a few minutes apart on foot: Sotheby's Maison in Landmark Chater, open to the public seven days a week during exhibition periods, and Christie's Asia-Pacific headquarters on four floors of The Henderson on Murray Road. Christie's had not published its autumn 2026 dates in a form we could verify, but the house has recently sold in the same last week of September.
01Waarom het relevant is
The autumn season is the fuller test of Hong Kong as a market. Spring borrows its audience from Art Basel; September and October have to generate their own, and the results are read across the region as a measure of how much business the city retains on its own account. For collectors of Chinese art in particular, the first week of October in Hong Kong remains the most important fixture anywhere, and the specialist sales — imperial ceramics, jades, classical painting, seals — have no equivalent in New York or London at this scale. Our reading is that the autumn season, not the spring one, is where Hong Kong's standing against Shanghai, Seoul and Tokyo actually gets settled, because nothing else is bringing people to the city that month.
02De week eromheen
There is no fair anchoring the autumn season, which changes the texture entirely. Central is busy in the evenings but the crowds are local and regional rather than international. The Hollywood Road and Sheung Wan antiques trade, which has always fed the Chinese art sales, is at its most active in the first week of October; the Pedder Building and H Queen's galleries program against the contemporary evening sales in late September. M+ and the Hong Kong Palace Museum in West Kowloon run their autumn exhibitions across both. The mainland's National Day holiday at the start of October brings a substantial visitor influx that has nothing to do with the auctions and everything to do with hotel availability.
03Wanneer aan te komen
It depends entirely on which season you are here for. For the contemporary evening sales, arrive on the Friday before the last week of September and stay through the following Wednesday. For Chinese and Asian art, come in at the start of October and give yourself the full week, including time on Hollywood Road. For jewelry and watches, the third week of September is a separate trip. Very few people do all three.
04Waar te verblijven
Central is the obvious base — both salerooms, the galleries and the Airport Express terminus are walkable, and the Mandarin Oriental, the Landmark Mandarin and the Upper House are the landmarks people navigate by. Sheung Wan, at the western end, is closer to the antiques street and quieter in the evening. Tsim Sha Tsui across the harbor is a good choice in early October if you are also going to the West Kowloon museums; the ferry takes eight minutes. Note that early October is a mainland holiday week and hotel demand across the territory rises for reasons unrelated to the sales.
05Toegang en hospitality
Sotheby's Maison publishes public hours of eleven to seven Monday to Saturday and eleven to six on Sundays and public holidays, and its exhibitions are free and open without appointment; Christie's exhibitions at The Henderson are likewise free during published hours. Evening sale room access is not sold and follows from bidder registration or a client relationship, with references and identification filed several days in advance. Both houses stream evening sales publicly and publish results immediately. Day sales and the Chinese art sales are considerably easier to attend in person than the contemporary evening sales. Neither house publishes a hospitality programme.
06Waar de sociale activiteit plaatsvindt
Hollywood Road and Upper Lascar Row for the antiques trade, at their liveliest in the first week of October and open to anyone browsing. The Pedder Building, H Queen's and the Wyndham Street galleries for the contemporary receptions in late September. Hotel bars and restaurants in and around the Landmark and Prince's Building carry the evening traffic in Central; Sheung Wan and Star Street hold the quieter end. On the Kowloon side, the M+ terrace and the harbourfront promenade. All of it is public, and none of it requires an invitation.

08Praktische informatie
09Geschiedenis
Hong Kong's auction season was built on Chinese art. Sotheby's first sold in the territory in 1973 and Christie's from 1986, and for two decades the sales were dominated by ceramics, jade and classical painting sold to buyers in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Southeast Asia. Mainland Chinese participation grew rapidly through the 2000s and reshaped the calendar, pushing the Asian art sales toward the National Day holiday week. Contemporary art arrived later and eventually took the headline slot. The most recent change is physical rather than commercial: both houses left the rented convention halls for permanent salerooms in Central in 2024, which allowed the autumn programme to be spread across three weeks rather than crammed into four days of hired space.
10Wie is er
Three overlapping audiences rather than one. Chinese art collectors and dealers from the mainland, Taiwan and Southeast Asia, who dominate the October sales; regional contemporary collectors and the international advisers who follow them, concentrated in the last week of September; and jewelry and watch buyers, a largely separate group, in mid-September. Museum curators, the houses' Asian specialist departments and the private-banking community that services regional collections sit across all three.

| 2027 | VerwachtNot yet announced. The autumn season follows a settled shape: jewelry and watch sales in the third week of September, the modern and contemporary evening sales in the last week of the month, and the Chinese and Asian art sales in the first week of October, which places the classical material close to the National Day holiday when mainland buyers travel. The 2027 window is estimated on the 2026 weekday pattern. Confirmation normally arrives in June or July. | |
