Homo Faber takes over the Fondazione Giorgio Cini — the monastery complex on San Giorgio Maggiore, across the water from the Piazzetta — for the whole of September in even-numbered years. It is not a fair and nothing on show is for sale. It is an exhibition about making: silversmiths, weavers, glassmakers, bookbinders, lacquerers, instrument makers and restorers, shown as practitioners rather than as suppliers, with many of them working in the rooms while visitors watch.
The 2026 edition, the fourth, is titled An Island of Light and runs September 1 to 30. Es Devlin holds the artistic direction and has built fifteen installations through the Cini's cloisters, library and gardens, arranging the work of more than 500 artisans from over seventy countries into a single route rather than a series of stands. Live demonstrations, participatory workshops and guided visits run through the month, and the organizer publishes a daily programme.
The setting is a substantial part of the point. San Giorgio Maggiore is a two-minute vaporetto ride from San Marco and almost nobody goes there; the Cini's Palladian refectory, its Longhena staircase and its labyrinth garden are normally closed or visited by guided tour only. For one month every other year the island is open, ticketed and full of people, and the crossing itself does more to frame the exhibition than any wall text could.
01重要な理由
The European crafts on which a great deal of the luxury industry depends have an ageing workforce and a recruitment problem, and Homo Faber exists to argue publicly that this matters. The Michelangelo Foundation runs it alongside a year-round directory of artisans and a fellowship and training programme for younger makers, so the exhibition functions as the visible end of a longer project. For visitors it is the most concentrated display of living craft technique available anywhere, and the fact that the makers are present and working is what separates it from a decorative arts museum. In our reading, the biennial rhythm is a strength: at a month long and once every two years, it has room to be an exhibition rather than a trade event, and it never has to justify itself commercially.
02前後の週
September is the busiest month of the Venetian year and Homo Faber shares it. The Venice Film Festival on the Lido closes in the first days of the month; the Regata Storica, the historic rowing regatta on the Grand Canal, falls on the first Sunday; and in even-numbered years the Venice Art Biennale is open across the Giardini and the Arsenale through the same weeks. The city's own craft trades — the Murano glass furnaces, the Burano lace workshops, the gondola squeri and the mask and paper makers in Dorsoduro and San Polo — are the natural extension of a Homo Faber visit and are open all month.
03到着時期
Because the exhibition runs for a month, there is no correct week; there is a correct time of day. Go to San Giorgio on the first vaporetto after opening, when the island is empty and the light through the Palladian windows is at its best, and give it four hours. Avoid the first weekend, which collides with the Regata Storica and the end of the film festival, and avoid the last, when Venice's September crowds peak. Mid-month, midweek, is the answer.
04宿泊先
Venice is small and everything is a vaporetto ride from everything else, so the choice is about character. San Marco and the Riva degli Schiavoni are the closest to the San Giorgio landing and the most crowded. Dorsoduro is quieter, closer to the Accademia and the Guggenheim, and the part of the city where the craft workshops still are. Cannaregio, in the north, is where Venetians live and is the best value. The Giudecca, immediately west of San Giorgio, is the calmest of all and has the Cipriani and the Redentore for landmarks. Staying on the mainland at Mestre saves money and costs an hour a day.
05アクセスとホスピタリティ
Homo Faber is ticketed and open to the public, with admission sold through the event's own online platform; the organizer publishes a full daily programme, guided routes, artisan demonstrations and workshops, some of which are booked separately and fill. We did not verify prices and none are quoted here. There is no trade-only session — the exhibition is designed for a general audience — and the Michelangelo Foundation runs a NextGen programme for emerging makers alongside it. Getting to the island requires the public vaporetto, which is a separate fare.
06社交活動の場
Very little of Homo Faber's own social life is public, and Venice supplies the rest. The Zattere and the Giudecca waterfront in the early evening; the bacari of Cannaregio and San Polo for cicheti and an ombra, which is how Venetians actually drink; the Accademia and Dorsoduro for the gallery crowd; and Harry's Bar and the Gritti terrace as the landmarks people use for meeting. During the Art Biennale months the Giardini and the Arsenale carry their own programme. The most rewarding hours in Venice in September are the ones spent on the water at either end of the day, and the vaporetto counts.

09沿革
The event began in 2018, staged by the Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Craftsmanship in partnership with the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, and returned in 2022 and 2024 before the 2026 edition; the gap after the first event reflects the pandemic years. The pairing with the Cini is what gives the project its scale — the foundation occupies the whole island and has been restoring its buildings since the 1950s — and the appointment of exhibition designers and artistic directors from outside the crafts world has shaped each edition's character. The Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d'Arte, a long-standing Italian crafts institute, presents the 2026 edition jointly.
10参加者
A general cultural audience more than a trade one: Venetian and Italian visitors, international travellers already in the city for the Biennale or the film festival, and design-minded tourists. Within that, a real professional contingent — collectors and dealers in decorative arts, the craft and heritage sector, museum curators, design schools and the workshops of the luxury houses whose techniques are on show. Makers themselves are present in numbers, which is unusual and changes the temperature of the rooms.

| 2028 · fifth edition | · fifth edition | 予定THERE IS NO 2027 EDITION. Homo Faber is biennial and falls in even-numbered years, so the next event after September 2026 is expected in September 2028. Nothing has been announced. The 2024 and 2026 editions each ran the full month of September at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, and the 2028 window is estimated on that pattern; the venue partnership and the month should both be treated as likely rather than fixed until the Michelangelo Foundation confirms. |
