Each autumn a Geneva foundation runs a competition and an awards ceremony for the watch industry. Houses submit watches, an academy of several hundred industry figures, retailers, collectors and journalists votes to establish a preselection, and a jury chooses winners across roughly sixteen main categories — chronograph, tourbillon, ladies' and men's complications, jewellery, artistic crafts, diver's, time-only and others — plus a handful of special awards. The senior prize is the Aiguille d'Or, awarded to the single best watch of the year regardless of category.

What makes it useful to a visitor rather than only to the trade is the exhibition. Every nominated piece is displayed publicly before the ceremony, in Geneva and, in recent years, on a roadshow that has run through Asia and elsewhere. For the 2026 edition the Foundation showed the 84 nominated pieces at Geneva's Musée d'Art et d'Histoire from late October, having first taken them to Mumbai and Bangkok, with the winners going on to London afterward. Admission to these exhibitions is free and the Foundation runs guided tours and workshops alongside them.

The ceremony itself is a formal evening for the industry, with a live broadcast and a dinner for a few hundred, held in 2026 at the Bâtiment des Forces Motrices, a converted riverside pumping station on the Rhône.

01重要な理由

The GPHG is the only prize in watchmaking that the whole industry recognizes, and an Aiguille d'Or measurably changes a small house's standing. Because the academy is broad and includes retailers, collectors and press rather than only manufacturers, the results are read as an independent verdict in a business that otherwise has very few.

In our reading, the exhibition is the more valuable half. Nowhere else can a member of the public see eighty of the year's most significant watches in one room, free, without an appointment or a purchase history. The Foundation has leaned into that deliberately, adding school programs and public tours, and it is the reason the GPHG belongs on a general calendar and not only on a trade one.

02前後の週

Geneva in early November is in its working season: the lake is grey, the diplomatic and conference calendar is full, and the city is at its least touristic. The GPHG does not take it over. What it does is add a free, serious exhibition to a city that is otherwise closed to casual watch visitors, and fill a handful of hotels for two nights around the ceremony.

The timing is deliberate: the ceremony sits close to the November Geneva auction week, when Christie's, Sotheby's, Phillips and Antiquorum hold their autumn watch sales, so specialists, collectors and press can combine the two. Anyone planning a November trip to Geneva should check both calendars before booking.

03到着時期

For the exhibition, any day it is open; it runs for around two and a half weeks and is rarely crowded except at weekends. For the ceremony, arrive the day before and stay two nights — the evening runs late and the following morning is when the industry actually talks. Combining the ceremony with the November auction previews is the efficient way to use a Geneva trip.

04宿泊先

The Rive Droite lakefront hotels are the industry's default and are within walking distance of both the museum and the ceremony venue. The old town and the Rive Gauche are quieter and closer to the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire. The Plainpalais and Jonction districts, near the Bâtiment des Forces Motrices, are cheaper, younger and perfectly practical. November is not a peak month in Geneva, so rooms are generally available unless a large conference coincides.

05アクセスとホスピタリティ

The exhibitions are free and open to the public, in Geneva and on the roadshow, with guided tours and workshops published by the Foundation. The awards ceremony is by invitation: the audience is drawn from the academy, the participating houses, partners and press, and there is no public ticket. The Foundation livestreams the ceremony on its own site, which is how most of the industry watches it. Academy membership is by nomination and is the route by which collectors and journalists gain a vote.

06社交活動の場

The exhibition galleries during opening hours, where the visiting public and the trade mix freely; the hotel bars along the lake in the evenings, which during ceremony week function as the industry's meeting rooms; and the ceremony's own reception and dinner, which are closed. Around the same dates the auction houses hold previews in their Geneva premises, and those are open and are the other place people gather.

07アクセス方法

民間航空Geneva Airport (GVA) is fifteen minutes from the city center by train or taxi.
鉄道Geneva-Cornavin is on the TGV from Paris in about three hours and on Swiss services from Zurich, Basel, Bern and Lausanne. Both the museum and the ceremony venue are a short tram ride or a twenty-minute walk from the station.
車Unnecessary. Central Geneva is compact and parking is expensive.
プライベート航空Geneva handles heavy business-aviation traffic; November is well outside the winter and fair peaks and slots are generally available.
ヘリコプターTransfers operate from the airport; there is no city heliport.
マリーナLake harbors are recreational and close for the winter.

08実用情報

服装The ceremony is formal evening dress and is treated as the industry's black-tie night. The exhibitions require nothing at all; they are museum visits, and November in Geneva calls for a coat.
天気Geneva in early November is cold, often grey and frequently foggy, with the Bise wind making it feel sharper. Everything associated with the GPHG is indoors. No station normals were sourced for this record.
市内での移動Trams and buses cover everything and hotel guests travel free. The Bâtiment des Forces Motrices sits on an island in the Rhône a short walk from the Plainpalais and old town areas; taxis after the ceremony are scarce and worth pre-booking.
ホテルNovember is a moderate month in Geneva and rooms are usually available, but the GPHG and the autumn auction week can overlap with conference demand. Book a month ahead for the ceremony nights.
レストランGeneva's restaurants are bookable in November with a few days' notice, except on ceremony night when the industry fills the better rooms near the lake. Carouge and the Eaux-Vives are the reliable alternatives.
予約時期The Foundation publishes the ceremony date around ten to twelve months in advance and the exhibition schedule some weeks before. Hotels a month ahead. Ceremony attendance cannot be bought and must come through the academy, a participating house or the press office.
チケットThere are no public tickets to the ceremony, which is invitation-only and livestreamed free on the Foundation's site. The Geneva exhibition and the travelling exhibitions are free to enter, with published opening hours and a program of tours and workshops.
ホスピタリティThe Foundation hosts a gala dinner for a few hundred guests around the ceremony; it is not sold. Partner brands and retailers host their own guests during the week. No commercial hospitality tier exists.

09沿革

The prize was established in 2001, at a moment when mechanical watchmaking had recovered commercially but had no independent critical apparatus. It was initially a small Geneva affair with a jury and a modest ceremony. Two changes made it consequential: the creation of an academy of several hundred voters, which broadened the constituency beyond a closed jury, and the decision to exhibit the nominated watches publicly and then to take them abroad.

The travelling exhibition has grown into a genuine circuit, and the roster of host cities changes each year — Mumbai, Bangkok and London in 2026, with New York among earlier partners. The ceremony has moved between Geneva venues over the years, including the Théâtre du Léman and the Musée Rath for exhibitions, and settled at the Bâtiment des Forces Motrices for the 2026 edition.

10参加者

For the ceremony: brand executives and watchmakers, academy members, retailers, collectors and specialist press, a few hundred of whom stay for the dinner. For the exhibitions: a general public that includes Geneva residents, schools and visitors with no trade connection at all, alongside collectors timing a visit to the auction previews.
